portables........?
« on: October 14, 2006, 09:33:54 am »
I am going to purchase a new portable soon, I have heard that Eclipse is a good machine but very heavy and parts/spares are difficult to get hold of, I have heard that the Scorpion that Nick Vousden White sells is very good though it doesn't look good. What are the opinions out there about portables, who thinks what is the best and why? Up to now I have always used a 100psi twin vac, so what should I get now? Thanks guys I appreciate your comments

So now you know!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

There is no Best machine, but there are a number of popular machines and you should try out as many as you can.

I have a Ninja and an Extracta and they are both effective, but if I were buying a new machine, I would try to test as many as possible.

Still regard the CFR as a superb machine.

good luck

With the availiblity today with super power portibles that are going to cost you upwards of£2800 make sure you buy one that has a built in heat exchanger.

Have a look at cleantalk forum at the mo. There is a topic on whether hotwater is necessary. I believe not and that goes for both detergent but especailly MS.

There's no doubt in my mind that hot water gets better cleaning results - hot water is more active than cold water and that's a fact.

Just ask your wife to wash all the clothes in cold water from now on and you'll soon see the difference!

Hi Guys,

It's a scientific fact that reactions occur more quicky as the temperature increases, 10 C increase can triple the rate of reaction.

This is the reason even a small increase in body temp is fatal as the body reacts out of control.

JB makes a good point about washing , is it really likely that a tiny industry like CC will have technology that a massive industry like washing powders will have missed.

Why don't our wives just spray our clothes with some microsplitter and wash in cold water, quite simply because they can get far better results using heat and a mixture of chemicals.

As I've said on previous occaisions companies like Proctor and Gamble will have research budgets running into millions of pounds ;)

Cheers

Doug

Doug,

I made the same point a few weeks ago. A microsplitter based washing powder would go down a storm, imo, if it works as well as detergent.

Hi Calmore,

Yes I remember you making it.

One of the trouble with the CC industry is that there are many competing manufacturers splurting loads of technobabble .

Real science tends to get lost in all the jargon etc, thats why I try to decipher some of the chemistry bull.

Take other areas like vacuum motors in parallel or series, surely it is possible to work out the best method for removing most water but different manufacturers claim their contradicting machines are the best. ::)

Cheers

it all depends on what you use your portable for, is it a cleaning machine or a rinsing machine.

if you want to use your portable as a cleaning machine, so the solution; dissolves, detaches, encapsulate the dirt in the carpet then removes it, you will need heat.

if you have already 'dissolved, detached, encapsulated' the dirt from the carpet before you get the portable out of the van by using an appropriate pre-spray & agitation machine then the portable is used only to rinse the dirt out, so heat isn't necessary.

this is why truckmounters don't like M/S they see their machine as a carpet 'cleaner' not 'rinser'  so don't want to be wasting time agitating.

given the choice i would chose extra vac power over a built in heater.

Mike ,

I take your point that a lot of energy will already have been put into the carpet during the agitaion stage' but hot water will still contain more energy than cold and will clean better.

I would prefer heat to vauum power if that was the question, personal choice I suppose.

Also hot water evaporates more readily than cold. This must have an effect on drying.
