Simbo,

I bet you've leafletted places and had two or three phone calls from one area and, if you've asked, I bet the potential customer would've told you that they haven't seen their old window cleaner in months.

That's the place to canvass.

Try it.  I find that because I'm not desperate for work, sometimes I'll do it for fun, rather than clean windows.  The last time I canvassed was during a really hot hot day a couple of weeks ago.

It was just too hot to work, so I thought I'd go door knocking, rather than waste a day (shopping or something with Wor Lass).

Wor Lass leafletted - she also won't door knock - so we split up) and in a couple of hours I got a £35 house at EOM, an £18 house monthly and a £12 house monthly (it is a posh area).

Anyone who wasn't in received a leaflet (my leaflet needs updating mind), and I haven't had one single call from these; though I know for a fact a window cleaner has dropped out of the area.

Just don't look or act like a Chav; be polite; and as the guys say, it's a numbers game.

Try it.  The worst thing that can possibly happen to you is that someone is so cross that you've disturbed them, that they physically attack you.

But I think it's rare this happens. ;)

gazza mate, just stick with it, rome wasn't built in a day, when customers tell you there's loads of people wanting a wc in their area they are usually telling the truth, the fact is a lot of people are wary and want to see you clean a neighbours windows a number of times to make sure you do a good job, are reliable and trustworthy.  I took over an area from another wc (we swapped work), he told me that there was no more work left in the estate, for 8months I got no extra customers, then waddayaknow I got the remaining 5 houses in one part, the next month I picked up another 2 and have been picking up at least another 3 each month in that estate since then, only about 15 houses left that I don't do but will prob get most of them.

the moral of the story is this, stick at it, do the customers you have on time and do the very best job you can, make time for them, be friendly and make sure THEY KNOW you are looking for more work.

Hi all, have just been out (first week leafleting)...had 7 calls, 2 quotes tonight(got the work), 2 quotes monday and the other 3 calls the people were just not sure, they wanted quotes on the phone...told them we would like to see the house before quoting....The upshot is that I feel ok as this is my first week... an hope this gives some of the other 'new w/c' a little boost that it is just about numbers and gritting your teeth and getting out.

I Know that every day will not be the same but...At least getting some work makes me feel that this new venture may not be the mother of all F*&k-ups.

Cheers
Dave. :D
