I vacuum mine out with a wet n dry vac every few years and replace with fresh. I also have to top it up occasionally(no more than just over a half full tank)
price higher/work harder!

I'm interested in what the question means. Is coolant required for hot water systems? Why? What does it cool?

Yes change it every couple of years the same as you would on the car or van , we use a 50/50 mix using the red long life antifreeze

Mate, it’s magic as far as I’m concerned and I don’t know either.

Webasto heaters can’t heat water, they heat coolant.

Coolant reservoir,
Heat from the diesel burner,
Coolant is pumped through a heat exchange plate,
Water is pumped through the other side of the heat exchange plate and the coolant heats the water.

The coolant is 50% water so it does heat water😂😂

It shouldn’t need topping  up it’s a sealed system you must have a leak somewhere

The filler cap on ours will allow the header tank to breathe both ways. It's the same plastic header tank Heatwave have been using for years.

The header tank on your ionics heaters have a 'car' radiator cap which will release pressure with water condensate if the pressure exceeds the rated pressure of the cap.

Yes you are right about the Ionic’s set up but the Grippatank has a one way valve in the cap so steam could escape but in 2 years or more between changing the water/antifreeze mix we have never needed to top it up in over 12 years total usage .
