Rule 244...
« on: April 18, 2013, 02:41:55 pm »
...of the highway code:

244
You MUST NOT park partially or wholly on the pavement in London, and should not do so elsewhere unless signs permit it. Parking on the pavement can obstruct and seriously inconvenience pedestrians, people in wheelchairs or with visual impairments and people with prams or pushchairs.
Law GL(GP)A sect 15

We've all done it, however disability groups are campaigning for a blanket ban to stop the practice.

I think the campaign for against pavement parking is because each house now seems to have 4 cars and a driveway to park 2 if your lucky  ;D
Im sure they will win though.

You should live up my road. Malvern was never meant for cars as the roads are very narrow. All the cars park half on the road and half on the pavement, if they didn't, no cars would be able to drive down the road. It would get blocked. So rule 244 is unworkable across the country and it would never be implemented in my area. Everybody just accepts that's how we HAVE to park no way getting round it! Police have seen all of us park the same and never say anything. Infact, one of my custies is a copper and to clean his windows I park partially on the pavement - he never says anything. They have probably got better things to do!

I agree.
In busy areas cars sometimes have to park on the pavement to allow traffic through.
Some councils paint white lines on pavements to specifically outline where cars are allowed to park up on the edge of the pavement. If you park outside of the lines they ticket you.
I think a blanket ban would be unworkable and can't see it happening

It is so cramped that we have to walk on the road as the cars are parked so close to the front of people's houses you can't get by! When I walk my German shepherd we just walk on the road. Wheel chairs? Never seen any up my road. I suppose they would have to do the same. People would really struggle with wheel chairs anyway as Malvern by its nature is just steep roads everywhere! Just the way it is.

where i live in welwyn garden city we have been written to by the council that if we park off road we will be fined, where my partners family live in hemel hempstead  on main roads you are encouraged to park off the road which are concreted, i was waiting for my partner  on one occasion outside her mother's house a passing car sounded their horn at me because i was the only car parked on the road, took me a while to realise why they sounded their horn at me..
