If possible do some research and find out the name of the person in charge of whatever department deals with what you want and then you can ask for them by name.

Just say to the receptionist ...... "Hi, sorry for bothering you.... I wonder if you could tell me.... If this office needed its carpets cleaned who would sort it out?"
What we all don't realise is generally People are incredibly helpful, just ask them.
Or walk into any small office/guesthouse/pub and shout..... " 'who's the boss?'

I would ask to speak to the Office Manager. The person in this role will generally be responsible for the smooth running of an office, including arranging general maintenance/cleaning etc.

You need to ask for the Facilities Manager.

Mike's approach has always worked for me, just be pleasant and ask "If you were looking to have the carpets cleaned who would be responsible for authorising that."

I've always found that most places simply say "it part of the cleaning contract". You'd be better off contacting contract cleaning companies.

Good point Owen but I'd do both, as those who don't use a contract cleaner tend to be prepared to pay a little more and you'll probably get a name, and those that do use a contract cleaner you get the chance to ask the receptionist who they use, so can contact them too.
