Jammed superlite Gardiner pole
« on: May 27, 2010, 01:22:54 pm »
Hi,
Does anyone know an easy way of unjamming sections of a superlite modular pole. I have sections 2 3 and 4 jammed together. I know someone else whose pole jammed on its first use and had to break it to free it. Don't wanna do that so will take any suggestions. I have done all the usual tricks, WD40, Oil, Hot water, PTFE lubricant but no success. I have only used the pole a total of 7 hrs and looked after it so there is obviously an issue with them.
Any advice welcome.
Thanks
Daz

have you looked here for any answers might be worth a try..

or an old quote from alex g

The best way to get the two sections apart is to use two people and rubber gloves. Get one strong person to hold the top section firmly (without crushing), make sure they hold the section above the joint overlap. The second person needs to then hold the lower section as close to the joint as possible and twist the section in a clockwise direction (this will look like you are turning it the wrong way!). Do not try to pull the section apart at all, as soon as a little twisting happens then you can start to exert some pulling force, but still mainly twisting. If this is to no avail then some heat may help. A heat gun lightly applied will help with this process.

Once they have separated we use Petroleum Jelly (Vaseline!) which seems to reduce the friction after extended work periods. However, it needs to be used sparingly. After applying PTFE spray, wipe a very thin layer over the male joints. It seems to give more friction to the joint on light contact which is good as it grips without needing to be tight, but then even under pressure it allows the joint to separate with greater ease. I'm finding that it only needs re-applying every couple of months.

otherwise i would just send it back to gardiners and let them sort it.

I've read of this problem with superlite poles several times recently and it seems quite common.
The problem may be grit or dirt on the sections. However carbon fibre does expand in warm conditions. Has anyone tried cooling the male section with cold water or ice close to the joint? If heat expansion is the problem this might help to release the section.

Cheers, might try a combination of ice on the male end and  and hot water on the female end.

How can you do that when they are jammed inside each other?

Sorry mate send it back, and buy ionics. Top poles never get stuck never get black hands. You pay for what you get.

Rubber gloves and turning clockwise is normally enough to unlock them. Grip as close to the joint as possible and squeeze only hard enough to grip.

Funny the exact same thing happened to us today. -Doesn't happen often actually. After struggling for a while I remembered there was this post and got the phone out log in.
This sorted it (without the rubber gloves! but there were three of us - the big guy just holding it firm and two twisting it clockwise.)
