All for business purposes (van)and my accountant allows me a certain amount for car use. Don't forget the road tax for both vehicles and mot's and servicing and repairs.  ;) :-X

Julian I would get an accountant, they know the things to you claim ect they are not expensive if you sort out all the tickets ect you get over the year.
will save you money in the long run.

For what they charge - they will save you 10 times more.

All of it if you've only used the vehicle 100% for business purposes. I claim 95% of all my van bills because i use the van now'n again for other things.
I was told by an accountant though that a 100% claim on van expenses could attract an unwelcome inspection!

I went to pontypool tax office last year, and I was claiming 90% of my van expenses as some would be private ie picking up milk ect.

They told me to claim 100% of my van as they to qoute " are not interested in you picking up these items"

When it comes to claiming for vechicle costs including fuel used, there are 2 methods that the tax man allow you to use.

These are called

Actual cost method
or
Mileage rate method

Which ever of these 2 you decide to use, you cannot change the method unless you replace the vechicle and sell your old one.

Actual cost method

With this method you can claim 100% of all cost that you incur whille running the van, including 100% of diesel. ( the tax man is not really interested in the shopping trips that you will do in a van, but if you do a lot of personel driving with the van then its best to deduct a personnel allowance )

The cost of buying the van is set at the rate of 50% in the first year then 25% per year thereafter.

Mileage cost method

Cars and vans  0.40p after 10,000 miles 0.25p
Motor Cycles  0.24p after 10,000 miles 0.24p
Bicycles  0.20p after 10,000 miles 0.20p

You cannot claim the cost of the vechicle seperately.

It really depends on your mileage, I do about 50 miles a day so claim the 40p per mile. That works out that the tax man allows me £100 a week for the van, it actually works out about £4500 a year. There is no way I spend that much running and maintaining the Escort. This is the best way for me, but as I said it depends on your mileage. Dai

I offset 85% of my van use against income tax.  My van is my only vehicle.  If I was running a private car as well, I would offset 100% of the van use against tax.  Obviously it will vary from one person to another.  Maybe check your mileage for a month writing down which is private and which is business.  Leave it a few months and do it again.  Then perhaps you can take a reasonable average.  This is what I did and 85% was about right for me.  Sure it will vary from month to month but as long as you are being reasonable it ought not be an issue.

Macmac if you have another car, i would offset 100, but dont tell the tax man about the car, if he complains tell them you also use the car for work purposes sometimes but you don't claim for it

and then ask them, would you like me to claim for it aswell then?
