Daz, what’s the difference between a 5* and a 4* Hotel?

the foods better....and the service and surroundings..... 8)

its adults only so no screaming kids too!! ;D

There’s one criteria that separates a 5* Hotel from a 4* hotel and you haven’t listed it. Nor will you - as it’s something that won’t likely occur to you as something that holds credibility in the rating stakes.

whats that then matt? ;D.......naked sauna?

I was talking to a friend over the weekend who is in the hotel trade. Their opinion is that usually the difference is just that a 5* hotel has a body on the desk 24 hours a day whereas 4* they'll knock off come midnight.
I thought it was going to be turning down the sheets.

Yep. A 5* hotel always has a concierge and 24 hour access. Wonder if Daz has actually ever been to one. Hes always banging on about them.  ;D

plenty of them in the past mate....sometimes its too much though as they try too hard....i mean who needs their rooms making up TWICE A DAY! ::)roll ;D

also i sometimes feel uncomfortable/out of place if their too posh......too many well educated middle and upper class people staying there for my liking...... ;D ;D

A 5 star city hotel is a totally different thing from a 5 star holiday resort hotel. I have been to a lot of the latter and in my experience there can be quite a variation in quality. For instance I stayed in one which included all the premium spirits and lagers in the all inclusive, I was drinking Havana No7 with bottled coke,  Erdinger lager and it was table service, it was expensive but you get what you pay for.  I have also been twice ( going for a third time next summer )to a 4 star in Costa Dorada which IMO is of a better quality than a few  of the 5 star hotels I’ve stayed at.

I'm happiest with 3 star.

I like to wear shorts and a t shirt for dinner, I'm on holiday sod a dress code.

Non branded local cheap alcohol is fine with me.

That said I'm not one for hotels, all inclusive and resort type holidays.
Ok if it's with friends or partner but nightmare with kids...

Whenever we go we look for a self catering villa or holiday home.

I like a hotel but breakfast only is more than enough, no matter the star all inclusive hotel restaurants tend to be like canteens packed full of tables that are too close together and full of people fighting to get to the grub first.

Not that it will matter to you tho mate! You will probably get Smirnoff and Bacardi and the likes at the hotel you’re going to but I guarantee you, you won’t get things like Havana No7, Erdinger lager or bottled coke. The point I was making was there are a lot of variations in quality even at the 5 star hotels

Over the years I have stayed in some of the best hotels in the World and other times have been  forced through necessity  to stay in some dives.  None of them make a jot of difference to me.  Sure I always prefer somewhere clean and comfortable over a dump but If they are all inclusive or not I never eat or drink anymore than I would if I were putting my hand in my pocket.   Quite frankly I don’t understand why anyone else would. I look  for a friendly comfortable hotel, preferably family run with breakfast and parking if needed all included.  Nothing more.  I do however think that anyone sitting down to dinner in a restaurant should wear long trousers and a shirt.

Penny, my other half, loves the Isle of Wight, so I thought it’d be nice to pop over for a night. We booked a hotel on line. What a dump! Tired, dated, tacky almost. Won’t be coming here again.

There’s a fabulous place on the island called Steephill Cove. Definitely a ‘find’.

The old lighthouse is now a self catering outlet. I’ll be booking that for a week next year.
