P.S
When i get full of work again i will get another lad.

The way i operate my business is to work myself on the tools and keep costs down by keeping vehicles to a minimum that way i can go out with the lads and observe them working while keeping costs to a minimum and reducing collecting areas so work is more compact.

I can keep my eye on them and ensure the work is being done correctly whilst pushing them on time and speed.
You need to have everything organised for this and have good managment skills to keep everyone motivated and focused.

The biggest WC team ive supervised was 4 lads and me which took some organising but brought great results. The operating costs went up for labour but i cut out vehicle expenses and boosted profits

There are different ways of running a business. You may want to be the biggest or the most profitable. You may want a lifestyle business were it works around other commitments. I prefere to operate with the bottom line being the profit. I might not have the biggest round in the northwest but i bet i dont have anywhere near the expenses as most. My profit margins are very high with no debt and hardly any living costs

Im thinking of getting a WFP set up in 2012 for commercials that i have on the go. Its an option but ive just made an arrangement with an old friend so that he can do the wfp work on my commercials indefinately while we will do what can be tradded.

One great example i can use is a friend of mine from stoke. I dont think he is on here but he has about 4 vans doing domestics and commercials and has a turnover in excess of £250k. He has to deal with VAT and the hassle of employing with one thing or another going wrong every week. Hes also limited so he sets himself a set wage. He paid himself £37k last year so he didnt go over the 40% tax threshold. He has all the hassle of running 4 vans and employing upwards of 6 lads and he pays himself £37k for the trouble.

I have a turnover of £50k+ per year and have two employees, one part time. My earnings for this financial year are over £30k and likely to be closer to £33k. I will be increasing my earnings with my eye on the Vat threshold and 40% tax threshold next year. I will be earning nearly as much as my friend but from a smaller turnover and with much less hassle

What might work for you might not work for someone else.

James i think you need to get a clear vision of what you want for your business and put all your focus and energy into making your vision reality.

All the best

If I was to expand I would take a vanlad on .. get the van up to its max possible income then put him in a van on his own and take a new vanlad on ... get van up to max again and stick another van on etc etc etc

The first time u put a second van you will take a hit on the income front but a case of 1 step back to make 2 steps foward.

EG
2 in a van should do £6000 min then basically when u put a second van on your halving this but with the added expense of another van.

Then grow it again so van 1 on £6000 again and van2 on £3000 ... put another van on and you now got van1 back on £3000 but van2 and van3 both doing £3000 each.

Van1 £3000
Van2 £1000 after costs
Van3 £1000 after costs

and just keep repeating until world domination

simplfied example but u get the idea

That's exactly what I said; great business men aren't we lol ;D
