LPG Heaters & Insurance
« on: December 16, 2011, 03:31:11 pm »
Who has a bolt on LPG Heater/Shower unit added to thier systems and who are they insured with? When i say insured with, did you inform your insurance company that you have one fitted?
Equity Red Star have flatly refused to insure a gas heated system, tried 3 times putting it over a different way to the underwriters, including having a cage made for the bottle, but still said no. They said it is something to do with the heating element of the water?? I also said i have a couple of diesel heated systems and the reply was that they will be reviewing all new diesel heated water system policies in the new year, including Ionics Thermopure Systems.
What's going on? Is this another way of getting higher premiums?

I'm insured with Quinn,.. they didn't bat an eyelid when I asked about the wfp system & have no problem at all with me carrying a gas bottle & heater.

I just asked my broker a few days back about having an L5 / Fogwash.

Im with Equity Red Star and go the same responce as you... broker told me to call them back when i was going to get it done and they would find me an insurance company that WOULD insure me as they are getting sick of ERS

Yes God forbid if your working a couple of doors away and there is a gas leek and boom, you reconstruct peoples property and cars, I would go with "it must have been a tyre that blew gov".
You might save a couple of tax deductable pounds by saying nowt short term, but you have not thought it through have you.

I would rather pay a few hundred quid more in insurance, than have the worry of something going wrong, like a leak or someone driving into the back of me.

I have recently renewed my van insurance with the same Insurance Co, and this time they specifically asked if I carried any hazardous materials.

Hi,

No, neither.

I have a diesel Eberspacher hot air night heater in the van that keeps the cab and cargo area warm and that was bad enough trying to explain what that was to them.

I have a Webasto Thermo Top C water heater from a yacht plus virtually everything else I need to build up a two man hot water system. What I have been half heartedly looking for is a decent steel enclosure to fit this thing into.
I have thought of making up a wooden cabinet, but in the summer there is always more important things to do and in the winter its too cold and miserable.

I have given the Fogwash serious consideration. I came to the conclusion that I would be better off fitting an LPG tank under the van (I have a Citroen Relay and they make suitable chassis mounted tanks with brackets to fit the Ducato mobile homes) with an LPG filler secured to the rear towbar.
My only issue was finding a suitable roof vent that was low profile as I have a roofrack.

I did try to find the supplier of the roof vents that BT used for the gas heaters in their old Transits before they switched to Eberspatcher hot air heaters in their new vans as they were ideal.
