We never, ever ring and have never had a problem.

We climb over gates and if they're not home we hammer on the door at their work and embarrass them in to paying in front of their work mates; being sure to shout out loud that they still owe us for the past three cleans ;)
Come and talk dirty to us!!!

If telephones hadn't been invented neither would cars or vans so we'd all be going round on bikes with ladders attached - so our rounds would be very localised and Mrs Smith & Mrs Jones would just know which day we'd be there and leave the gate open because there weren't any burgulars because there were no mobile phones to nick and they'd leave the money in a tin on the windowcill.  Simples
