ive noticed a lot of bt engineers wearing helmets up ladders recently, ive been contemplating using my skate ramp/mtb helmet next time i do gutter cleaning. anyone else think its a good idea
i was also thinking of using my sportsbike knox back protector too....

Hard hats should be worn if there is a risk of something falling on you.
I guess, cleaning windows, somethin may fall on you, a loose roof tile perhaps.
Gutter cleaning. Well your head height is normally above the gutter. So perhaps the chimmney stack may fall and hit you, but then i'd be more worried of falling off the ladder.
So, unless your worried about a cloud falling on your head, or a bird poo'ing on you. Then i wouldnt think a hard hat would be neccesary
-
id look a right tit cleaning windows with a helmet on
-
:o BEWARE THE BIRD POO :o

what you worried about then stan. :P :P :P :P :P

simple thing is just don't go up ladders as its illegal and your insurance is invalid in the event of an accident!

course im worred about the fall, theres only about 1% chance of a roof tile coming off!
i wouldnt wear a rock climbing helmet, as they only protect the top of the head from rock falls.
yeah i think i will try it out, who cares what people think of you, i think people will admire you actually.
on a side note, is it best if a ladder falls backwards to hang on then do a roll if poss to expend the energy, like they do in parkour?
or drop straight down?

lol quality m8! ;D

I have seen some of the ocs boys wearing helmets
-
It's surprising that this has not already been implemented by HSE. Christ knows why they haven't pounced on it yet for us.
Mogsy I am blaming you if it comes to pass for putting ideas into their heads.

Hi,
As I have an interest in old window cleaning related items I have many a time read "Window cleaner died from Fractured skull falling from ladder."
Kevin WINDOLENE.
-
well i think it might look cool! ;D
-
I think a full face motorcycle helmet and a suit of armour would be best.
-
;D depends how ugly you are ;D LOL
-
dainese and others have invented the air bag for motorcycle racing leathers, maybe cleaningspot can invent the air bubble for window cleaners, lol ;D
-
ronnie b
it just might happen ;D

Me too actually Mogsy now that I think of it, it's a bit like the concept of wfp. Still there will be some who think it will look silly. Let's face it, it's not as if walking around with a smashed in skull doesn't look cool so who could blame them. ???
-
Yep i agree to that there is a pic on hse website of a person on the floor making it look as though they have fallen and have a cracked skull,
but the thing is its says on hse website you can end up with a cracked skull from a fall or slip or trip,
now that could apply to falling from height/ladders
or slip or trip/wpf
-
here is the pic on the link and it does say slips trips and falls
so that applies to ladders and wfp

i could slip over in the supermarket, doing the shopping. But i aint gonna wear a helmet for going shopping
i could walk out the front door & a bird could poo on me ;D but i aint gonna wear a hair net
my dog could be chasing a rabbit, and he gets injured, but i aint gonna stop hunting with him ;D

Ouch!!!!!! had that happen to me on an ice rink once, that's why I am the way I am, even when I am not.
Thing is, if everyone who goes up a ladder really thought safety first, then surely they would by default wear a safety helmet of some kind.
This post has got me thinking.
-
i think it could be a good idea as well
police wear helmets on there bikes does it look stupid no!
wherever there is a risk a helmet should be worn is this not common practise yet i/you have for years just never gave it any thought
Well this has got me thinking this post
what would i prefer to look like cool or daft up a ladder with a helmet on
Prefer the ladder option because i dont think i will look cool dead ;D
-
i wonder how many lives would be saved if people up ladders used helmets?
i remember mountain biking for years without a helmet, except when i was dh racing, from 1993-2002
then i started using a piecase lid, and did a double mtb/bmx jump in my local woods, crashed and smashed the helmet in half! broke my collarbone too!
i think something like that wakes you up to how breakable you are, that was about a 10ft jump and 10-15mph.
so a ladder whats that 20 ft?
-
Yep totaly agree mogsy
If it is seen that window cleaners are themselfs willing to wear one they could well go ahead and implement it!
-
the way i see it, there is a risk in everything you do
you walk across a road, some divvy could come flyin down the road and knock you over.
what you gonna do? not cross the road?
you drive your car/van some divvy could knock into you
what you gonna do? Not drive?
you go up a ladder. and fall off.
what you gonna do??? NOT FALL OFF.
I reckon most 'ladder accidents' are caused by human error
-
Ryan you are missing the point it is about safe practise at work!
-
Helmit and full body armer you never know the hevens will come down. ??? ???
-
next people will be wantin to drill eyebolts into every 'ladder' point and use harnesses :-X
if i was to fall off a ladder, i'd be more worried about my back or legs as opposed to my head
-

ALL ladder accidents are caused by human error.
Everything we do in life carries a risk, the trick is for your brain to take in the surroundings and things going on and asses the possibilities of an accident. So if you are working in windy conditions with a roof that looks a bit dodgy then perhaps you should consider taking some form of preventitive actions in case a tile slips and comes down.
I fear for this country that so called H&S has gone so far down a road of it's own that sooner or later we will all be confined to our homes incase it rains and we have a slip.
-
ryan the helmet and back brace ..yeah its not going to stop you falling. but if you did..it can only help soften the blow.
if anyone is bothered about a ladder slip, then hire someone to foot your ladder, or buy those expensive, bulky, ladder stabilizers.
if anyone is bothered about falling OFF a ladder..... stop over-reaching or buy a reach n wash ;D
-
ryan, u r on the ball 2nite m8 ;) ;D

my sentiments exactly

cheers hitman ;D
whatever happened to common sense :o
-
It is common sence ryan and it applies to wfp as well as ladders!

yeah. Be careful, your brush might snap off the pole, fall down, and hit you on the head ???
ffs we better start wearing helmets & hi viz when walking thru the high street, incase something falls off a roof, or someone walks into us..... at least then, we would have out P.P.E
I worked on building sites, commercial domestic industrial & agricultural sites for nearly 6 years. and the only bumps on the head i have had is when wearing a hard hat, because it restricts your vision.
I've slipped, tripped & falled. normall due to not watching what i was doing, and your instinct is ALWAYS > HANDS FIRST
I better ord

Ho ho! Nice helmet!
-
I think a helmet is a bit over the top but a back protector is a good idea i have heard off a lot off windys breaking there backs ???
-
I think a helmet is a bit over the top
Why?
Every other industry that you use a ladder at height requires you to wear a helmet why should window cleaning be different!
-
cause we are very special people :P :P
-
I am starting to wear a hard hat for the gutter cleaning.
This is because the vac could pick up a piece of pointing, or other large debris that could fall if I catch it in the side of the gutter.
I did see a sky engineer wear a helmet for going up a ladder, he wasn't going higher that the first floor!!
Matt
-
I wear a parachute.
lol, or drag a mattress around where, we are working.
-
I would just keep tripping over that. >:(
-
simple thing is just don't go up ladders as its illegal and your insurance is invalid in the event of an accident!
thats suprising then, alexandra swan have insured me for gutter cleans off a ladder
-
i would think anyone cleaning windows up a ladder wouldnt need an helmet ,surely there head would be thick enough to deflect anything ;D ;D
-
I'd look like an accident waiting to happen if I wore my bike leathers - they are that scuffed from crashes even the local KTM shop refused me a test ride due to the state of them!
-
mmmmm ktm, been thinking of getting one of those next maybe a 690smc or a 990r?
