Do any else of you suffer from bad backs? I went to doctors last year but she said not a lot she could do bar take pain killers. It cleared up after that time i had off from xmas etc. But been out today and its killing me. Right between my shoulder blades. Can hardly sit stil, its not as if ive got a mega heavy pole either. Just a harris for every day use and a supalite for high stuff.
Can anyone give me any advice? I cant go on like this, crikey im only 25 walking round like a old man!
-
Suggest oesteopath ,they should sort it, and give some advice and exercises.

Have you tried using Deepheat cream, & heat pads at home?
-
Probably caused by bad posture.
A chiropractor might set you right in one (expensive) session or you could more than likely solve it at physiotherapy. I did.
I've got a bad lower back due to breaking it 20 years ago, and mines pretty incurable, but the gym has helped by strengthening the muscles around the area, even if it hurts like hell at the time!

I find iburprofen the best for me work every time.

The doctor can prescribe better though, like Mefenamic acid or Diclofenac.

I have the same problem or should I say had. Find out were you can have acu punture. But not with fly by night guys some how has spent some studying it. I was so bad I was in awhile chair after one go the walked out. After 3 time no pain at alluding let them tell you need 20 courses. If does not work after 3 time they do not know what they are doing. Our G P does it for a donation. I give him 10quid for the needles. I know have maybe 1 year or two. Its a skew spine you can see it. Pills long term kill your stomach so try to avoid them if you can
-
Ive been having shoulder/neck pain for years and I would strongly advise a visit to an Osteopath...
I went for the first time on Tuesday and within minutes he had pin pointed the problem area and has done a bit of "manipulation" to my shoulder (although its still painful) seems to have loosened it up.
Not cheap tho, at £35 a go... but if it sorts it out then its go to be worth it

Are you sure you should be doing an exercise if it hurts like hell? I was always taught never to train on an injury. However, you've had medical advice and I'm just a window cleaner; but it doesn't sound right to me.
Muscle injury yes, but this is a bone. It's not going to re-break after 20 years.
And when I said "at the time" I really meant afterwards.

a good chiropractor can be worth every penny. With a few sessions they can have you in great shape, and with a bit of exercising on your part you can maintain your good back!
-
i agree with milltown, i went to one a fe years ago a year after an acident i had, got told it was all in my head and just to take pain kills not one GP actually examined me at the time, went to so a chiro, turns out i had a twisted pelvis, twisted spine and parts of my neck where seperated, after this i was sent to a DSS doctor, who said i had impared spinal function, so spent the money with the chiro, am ok now, only get pain after a bad nights sleep
best bet is try and find out what problem is weather it is bones or muscle, could be a trapped nerve
it sounds stupid, but have a look at ur shoes if one wears out quicker than the other this can be a sign of a lower back problem as ur body will shift the weight to ur good side, and you dont even notice
-
The shoe advice is very good to find out were the problem, they say the one leg appears shorter.Iknow my is called scolliosis.of the spine it a skew spine many people have it and never know till the push themself to hard or sleep wrong, lift something to heavy with arms extented and side to side.I picket up a bike of a table after repairs and I just could not get upright. My left leg became useless.
-
I have to use two wallets now because using one used to pull me over to one side and twist my back. A wheelbarrow helps too.

Hi
Last christmas i was in terrible pain in the back shoulders and neck also getting blinding headaches and was popping the pain killers like no tomorrow. then someone told me about the BOWEN TECHNIQUE (you might laugh) so i booked a session went along she spent 20mins talkin about what was happening then did the stuff, i came out thinking what a load of b******s, went back the week after having a pain free week (first for months) had one more session that was it. 13 months later hardly had a twinge. i would never of believed it.

Is it only your back, ? If you are given diclofenac make sure you get the doc to prescibe lanzoprazole at the same time this will protect your guts.
Best thing for any strains and pains id swimming

Now I've been getting lower back pain which restricts me from getting dressed properly etc. It goes down to the top of my leg. I've been told its Sciatica which could take a few weeks to disapear.
-
I get sciatica, it flares up every few months, infact I only just had it yesterday. Now it's gone.
How did I get rid???
BUY AN INVERSION TABLE!!
I bough 1 from ebay last year, cost about £80 brand new.
You only have to spend 5-10 mins on it, usually sorts it out after 1 go.
It's the best thing I've ever bought and I had been to osteopaths painkillers ect.
BTW, my brother is 18 stone and he's fine on it.

a even lighter pole ? ? ??
my bad / neck issues were solved inside a few weeks when i started using the converted fishing pole
-
Most bad backs are lower back. If it's between your shoulders then maybe it stems from your neck?
I had years of back trouble finally ending up with six months of sciatica - so bad that I honestly thought my working days were over. Regularly see a physio now and touch wood have been fairly pain free for three years. My physio actually thinks wfp is helping my back because I extend my posture and bend my back in an arch whilst working. My last job involved a lot of bending over (printing) which was not good in my case.
-
It feels better today, booked into a spa and had a back massage. Ive got something importants on saturday thats very physical and im hoping and praying ill be ok. Resting up now.
I have had lower back pain in past, when i started with trolley lifting trolley in and out but that went when i transferred to van mount.
Its the muscles below my left shoulder blade thats giving me the gyp.

I doubt he would be able to drive on that stuff.

I second this call. osteopaths know more about backs and joints than the vast majority of GP's as they specialise in this area.

Didn't say anything on the ones I had, and I was fine.

My mother uses it as she has osteoperosis, and it states no driving on her bottle.
She has it on repeat prescription. and it about knocks her out.

I've used diclofenac for years on and off and although it's pretty effective it doesn't cause any drowsiness or similar things, from my experience. Not disagreeing with what you say Matt,it's just very mild as pain killers go,again from my exerience. When I was in bad pain they put me on Tramadol which made me feel I was stoned and more recently co-codamol which also contains mild opiates. Not an unpleasant feeling if I'm being honest!I've got scoliosis, curvature of the spine, which flares up from time to time which has led to real chronic lower back pain.Cripplingly bad on occasion.NHS sent me to a physio but although they do their best they don't really do more than give you strength building exercises which you can get from the internet or wherever.Mostly core exercises on the swiss ball.None of them helped greatly though frankly.Osteopaths do help but as said, are expensive, and if I'm honest found them to only offer temporary relief.

sad to say yes myself included its defo a window cleaners thing I said this years ago ,poles will cause big problems back neck stomach, how many after some hours of pole work suffer ??? with some pain or another, its an interesting subject ???
-
The pole done my back in.
I slipped down a hill with the pole 50 ft in the air, landed right on I disagree with a bang, didnt drop the pole though.
Been a bit sore since
-
Suffered a slipped disc and acute sciatica down one leg in july last year, never knew pain like that existed and was laid up for weeks.
Pankillers, physiotherapy and osteopaths helped but never fully fixed it.
I put it down to using a 40 foot pole and trying to control the whip to reach windows at an angle, since then i have cut down on wfp work and try to work off ladders and inside access when possible.
Yesterday i had the pole back up to full length again for a new job and was worried last night that my back was going to go again.
I still take a Diclofenic in the morning to ease me up and it has no effect on driving or concentration but still taking it after eight months or so.
Poles are great when the windows are straight on and not too high but unless you are fit and have good core strength they can cause grief.
This post is not a dig at wfp but since my mishap i have realised that going back to ladders and feeling confident of the results after a job far outweigh the feeling of dread as you pull away from a job and hope that the windows dry well and your back holds up.

Yup we should sue health and saftey for back issues through their introduced health and safety regulations. ;D
Well if i pass tommorow it could mean the end of my window cleaning days. ;)

We really need to learn to change leading hands when poling, we did it with squeegeeing didn't we? It's window cleaning that's made me more or less ambidextrous. A swivel on your brush helps too, takes a lot of strain off when doing those over con window.
A good swivel also lets you clean from side to side as well as up and down, so you can vary your body movements.
Pain between the shoulder blades is mostly down to a postior problem, I get it and I know I'm a slouch, It can even cause pain where the ribs attach to the sternum.
