Title: Road grit
Post by: Londoner on January 12, 2010, 09:52:28 pm
I want to get some road grit/salt for next time it freezes up like this. I've seen it sold in  bags  but can't remember where. Does anyone know who sells it?

I realise it will all be gone now but I want to get some for next time.

I phoned b&q last week for some but the council had been that morning and taken loads away because they were short.

Im thinking of doing same thing but only for round my house and street

Try a local DIY store or a builders merchant..
Wicks did have some but you need to ask them if you cant see it.

Yes. I believe one of the local wags nicked a police car to drive home in one night and said the same. S'funny, but the magistrate didn't seem to follow his reasoning and banged him up for a couple of months.

It's probably safer to buy the stuff from your local builders yard.

Seized? Did they march in wearing jack boots?

Is this what GB's Britain has come to when the  council stazi can order the seizure of goods from a builders yard?

in our local paper there has been critisism of people
who been using the grit from the bins for clearing
their drives and the roads in front of there homes.

far as im concerned every bit of road or path freed
of snow got to be safer.

if the public wasnt using it,it would be still sat
there i guarantee there wouldnt be any council
workers using it

Thats being flexible and diverse to the situation.

If i could get out my street i would be cleaning more driveways/paths for £5-£10 and if i had salt as there is a shortage i would also offer it for sale. Its making money were the other area of our business (window cleaning) is on its a*se.

I've just been looking into getting a snow plough and grit spreader for the pick-up, could get all the kit for about 2K, wonder if it might be a good add-on to the window cleaning for months like this.

I have a lot of commercial custys with car parks that I could offer the service to.

I know it might be a bit late for this year, but maybe next.

what do you think?

You buy it and then it doesn't snow again for three years

Last winter i got stuck on a private road which was iced over and it took an hour and a half to get off the job and after that i went to B&Q and got a bag of grit.
It lay in the van unused till summer when i dumped it as it was just extra weight to humph about and you can guess what happened to me before xmas.
Only took an hour of digging out two tyre tracks up the drive to get off the job this time but i am going to get a sealed bucket full of grit to carry about and keep it this time thus guaranteeing a mild winter next time round.

I'm definitely going to get a few bags and put them behind the shed out of sight until next year.

It's a bit complex, but here goes...

First of all, I use StarOffice 8 rather than MS Word, but I guess it would work on MS Word as well.

1 - write the word "revolution" on the word processor
2 - change the language for the document to French
3 - do a spell check it will change "revolution" to "révolution."
4 - copy it and paste it into CIU
5 - close the word processor document remembering to change the language back to English (uk)

Is that a bit sad? Why should anyone be quite so anal as to want to do that? It's just me being me, I'm afraid.
