Post by: Dean Aspects on January 30, 2009, 03:53:36 pm
I usually take a note of the due date in my diary but this time i forgot to write it in so i was checking it this morning  :o it ran out 3 months ago  :o so after panicing and sweating alot when i realised what i had done or not done should i say took it up to get the MOT done obviously it failed and cant get the work done on it until Tuesday so i am off the road until Wednesday silly boy  >:(

Moral of the story is dont forget to write your MOT due date in the diary

i did the same last year easy done unfortunately. my old man once forgot to change the insurance on a new van his company had bought and when he went to renew they told him it hadnt been insured for 9 months and he had an employee, doing 60 to 70 miles a day in that van

Most Mot centres put a little sticker with the due date in the window ;) I know what you mean though easy to forget. A  building company I worked for gave one of their employees a van to use and he had it a while when he got stopped by the police for having a back light out. Back then you still had to produce documents at the police station. When the boss got the documents to produce he made the discovery that the MOT was overdue by 18 months! Needless to say the employee wasn't very happy as he was held responsible in the laws eyes!

Would be good to have a reminder in the post...we have a reminder for tax and insurance so why not MOT's?

I ran my van for six months with no mot last year. It was it's first one and i had it in my head it was due in Aug - but it wasn't.  :-\
Often get a big police van at the end of our road pinging number plates too - i was very lucky.

I've been past those cameras a few times in the last 3 months and never heard anything from them so i have been lucky aswell unless of course its in the post

Frightened myself silly because no-one seems sure if your insurance is valid with no mot - probably not. When the mot has expired you are only allowed to drive to a pre-booked mot testing station.

There was something in the local news that hardly anyone had been prosecuted after being caught by these cameras. They have cost thousands too.

We ran around in our car for 3 months without insurance. We had changed insurance companies and they didn't automatically renew it, unlike the previous company. Only found out when I rang them for a quote on a new car...  :o

I know this is thread drift but I want to say smething about insurance that may be relevant to some on here.
Some years ago, when I first switched from car to van for work, my insurer insisted on me taking out a commercial policy.  I went fully comp as usual.  Also, as usual, I drove my then girlfriend's car occasionally too.  I was not a named driver but my fully comp policy had always covered me to drive her car (third party only but it was an old crate anyway).
WRONG !!!  Fortunately, I found out the easy way.  Although my previous fully comp car policy covered me third party for hers, my COMMERCIAL policy didn't.  This seems to be the norm.  I drove a return journey from Gatwick to Yorkshire whilst uninsured.  Would never have done it if I had known of course.  So, if anyone is doing this, be warned.

I found this out the hard way and have the points to prove.

Also if you have two or more vans with insurance they are separate policies i had two vans one with full no claims the second with 1 year when i sold the first i informed the insurance and automatically thought i had full no claims but i didnt and when i noticed obviously the time had run out for me to claim the full no claims bonus

So if your mot is out how do you get it to the garage?

insurance is VOID if not MOT

UNLESS you are on the way to a pre booked MOT test

correct, all mot you get a sticker for window screen, not sure if they now by law have to put it there or not. I know when mine run out I just look at the tax disks  ;)

This is all very surprising and very naughty,

Im a man of the law, I wont go into detail about what my special constable duties have included this week but to cut a long story short after a cracking warrant(drugs raid) and plenty of extra work there are a lot less illegal substances on the streets of stoke this weekend.

Joking aside guys, MOTS are there for a reason and keep on top of them :o :o :o :o :o

it doesnt VOID your insurance if your vehichle isnt mot'd, sure you cant drive it till its passed retest

but your policy isnt void the minute your mot runs out, wouldnt matter if i let the mot on my car run out and it then got nicked, still covered by its insurance

the discussion was about using the van with no MOT, in this case, the insurance is void if driven

my campervan has no MOT, but of course is still insured, but its not being used and is parked up

they would normally deduct 10% of the value of the vehicle if it had no MOT, as it was "un roadworthy" at the time. But it would still be insured (fire and theft - if you have that cover), but not to drive obviously.

Anyway, just checked my van MOT - due Wed's, got it booked in for today as im doing not much :D Hope it goes thru ok..
