Title: facelift crash test
Post by: George P on February 27, 2008, 07:06:53 pm
facelift have kitted out all our vans over the years & this is the second time our vans have been involved in an accident, occuppants safe on both occasions , one at 70mph and this one at 40mph, both times tanks have stayed in place, if fitted by someone else they probably still would have stayed in place but ill never know. what i do know is i am glad they were fitted by proffessionals and not myself and a mate etc. i know some of you fit them yourselfs and im not saying thats a bad idea but please be careful and make sure it is right.

I have more respect for other road users than to travel at excessive speed with a tank full of water in the back!!! >:(

What were the circumstances of the crash - rear ended? bump? bridge pillar?

If you do a ton with 800ltrs in the back, then you deserve to be locked up as you are a disaster waiting to happen!  >:(

Luke it was on the road.

Groundhog, do you ever break the speed limit? Or are you one of these drivers who has never had an accident but seen hundreds?

Wouldnt it be a good thing if he didnt break the speed limit, it means he wont loose his license and have to stop working  :(

I wrote off a car at 120 mph when I was 17! It was a miracle that I didn't kill anyone!! Now I have grown up I stick to the speed limit, SPEED KILLS!!!!!  :(

Speed doesn't kill, it is usually the sudden stop that does the damage.

Im sorry, but speed does kill, it slows reaction times. Or should I say there is less time to react and stop, Luke

I was in the fast lane of the motorway when there was a pile up in front of me, I ploughed into the back of a Daimler as I was going too fast to have any chance of stopping, I had my brother, sister and girlfriend in the car, I could have wiped them all out and the occupants of the other car, but amazingly no one was hurt!
Title: Re: facelift crash test
Post by: Captain Scarlet on February 28, 2008, 07:41:17 pm
Was the Daimler moving quick too? as that would have helped, Luke
Title: Re: facelift crash test
Post by: groundhog on February 28, 2008, 07:43:17 pm
No it was stationary as it had already hit another car! like I said it was amazing no one was killed!

Post by: Captain Scarlet on February 28, 2008, 07:44:20 pm
So you were doing 120mph then how much when you hit the Daimler? Luke

Not sure? but I skidded for about 30 meters before hitting it, and it was damp conditions, The ford Cortina I was driving was about the size of a mini afterwards!!

Ok so Im an experienced driver driving at 100mph ( what? ) and concentrating very hard, and a boy walks out in front of me, there is no time to break or slow down or react so I kill him......speed does kill.

Even if you are experienced and concentrating what can you do if there is no time to react because you are traveling too fast?
Title: Re: facelift crash test
Post by: Captain Scarlet on February 28, 2008, 07:58:47 pm
Yes but he could be futher away while your going faster and still you have no time to react,  Luke
Title: Re: facelift crash test
Post by: Captain Scarlet on February 28, 2008, 08:08:32 pm
You have much more chance of killing somebody if you are speeding...fact. You have less time to react, more energy involved ( increased chance of ending their lives/yours), less time to break etc etc, Luke

Why does your reation slow when you are going faster? mine does'nt

W

What a lovely discussion! May I join in?  :)

Reaction times stay exactly the same whatever speed you are going. What changes is the distance covered during that same reaction time. At 70mph your reaction time will cost you twice as much road space as at 35mph.

The word I should have used was "thinking distance". As your speed increases your thinking distance increases, Luke

Facts and Statistics about Speed

Speeding and excessive speed causes thousands of serious accidents and injuries every year.

Excessive speed contributes to 28% of collisions in which someone is killed, 18% of crashes resulting in a serious injury and 12% of all injury collisions. This means that around 1,000 people are killed each year on Britain’s roads because drivers and riders travel too fast, and over 6,000 are seriously injured.

Approximately two-thirds of all crashes in which people are killed or injured happen on roads with a speed limit of 30 mph or less. At 35 mph a driver is twice as likely to kill someone as they are at 30 mph.

Studies have shown the extent that the speed effects the risk of injury, and this is also shown in the simulator. Some key facts to note are that,

Hit by a car at 20 mph, 1 out of 40 pedestrian will be killed,
97% will survive
Hit by a car at 30 mph, 2 out of 10 pedestrians will be killed,
80% will survive
Hit by a car at 35 mph, 5 out of 10 pedestrians will be killed,
50% will survive
Hit by a car at 40 mph, 9 out of 10 pedestrians will be killed,
10% will survive

Stopping distances:

Speed ( mph )                  Overall stopping distance ( ft )
       20                                              40
       30                                              75
       40                                              120
       50                                              175
       60                                              240
       70                                              315
       80                                              400

Speed doest kill, it depends on who is driving at speed, i know a traffic cop, absolutely amazing driver, cruising speed down the motorway in a chase to catch someone is on average 120mph, he has never has a crash,

he spun a car off of the motorway in a pursuit the other day, the only damage he did to his police car was a tiny small black scuff,

just because the speed limit is 30mph, doesn't mean you have to go 30mph, what if children are at the side of the road,

part of the traffic police training, is to give a detailed commentary when they are driving, they look for things that i wouldn't,

speed in itself doesn't kill, speeding is something else, going faster than is permited by natural elements
