Title: SUPER-LITE 2 REVIEW AND LOADS OF GOOD PHOTOS TAKEN TODAY!!!!
Post by: Captain Scarlet on October 04, 2007, 04:09:15 pm
I got my 45ft Super-lite 2 this morning.....WOW, here are some pictures I took of it:

as you can see it is very very stiff, the picture above doesnt show the 2 sections out of shot, so it is higher than in the picture but I couldnt get it all in my viewfinder.

I zoomed in right to the brush for this one, and even though ocassionaly the brush was getting covered by a little cloud I got a good picture which is testimony to its strength that I could focus so easily on it with one hand while holding it up.

A picture of the joints up 40ft, you can see about 4 or 5 sections in this picture and hardly any bend, the white marks is my bad job of the PTFE spray!

the tough top section of carbon, really strong

this pictures important because it demonstrates how light the pole is because I was able to hold it up with one hand and do a macro shot of a tiny insect in my mums hand!!!

Well, I love it, what more can I say. You can lift it from horizontal at 45ft!!! it weighs less than my 18ft xtel and its so light that you can hold it above your head to clean, so you get an extra 5ft of reach!! A nice holdall is included and I must add that the really strong plastic angle adapter are used, as I have some horrible bendy ones. A colour instruction manual is included and other things! Well thats it, what a great pole, well done Gardiners and thanks for the good service and quick delivery, Luke

SO, is the hose running inside the pole on the new superlites?

The old ones used to run outside.

How do you adjust for height if it runs inside?

no it runs outside, I just wanted good clean and clear pictures so I didnt assemble it, it is really easy to do though, all you do is strap it outside with the velcro straps provided, Luke

just to tell you how stiff and light it is, for the two top pictures I had my DISABLED mum hold it, she has had serious spinal operations and has to walk using a walking stick, so if she can hold it, I think most can! it is also has really strong sections. You might have seen the videos of Alex battering it against a tree, sitting on it and standing on it!! Luke

Post by: stevekennedy on October 04, 2007, 05:35:40 pm
Do the straps stay on each section or are they loose? I only ask as I think they would slip down the pole.

Has Alex tried using guides on the outside. Such as you would find on an actual fishing rod to carry the line. Obviously I am talking about a bigger ring than you find on a fishing rod but you get the idea.

I am also wondering what is the minimum hose diameter you could get away with? Anyone experimented?

Ionics black hose is 5.5mm inner 8mm outer. Pretty light, but has anyone tried a thinner one?

no not really, compared to ionics and brodex. To make it a 60ft pole it will cost me another £108. the equivalent 45ft pole from Brodex is around £900!! and it weighs a tonne! this one is 50ft reach as it is so light , I'm 6ft 2 so I reckon it is more like 51ft reach over my head, Luke

With your new pole.

When you stop and clean a couple of houses then drive off a clean a few more, do you have to screw the sections together every time and how many sections needed to clean the top windows of an average house?

Bob

the sections push fit together. I wouldnt use this pole for the average house, but on big jobs 25ft+. I have no practical experience with this pole yet, I would say on an average house only 2 or 3 sections would be needed, luke

I will get either 40-50,i`ve got pole tubes in my van for easy storage and i`m a bit concerned that there a bit longer in sections as the old superlite fits perfect.

Bob,
Get yourself an 18ft multipole or equiv. for average houses. Under £100 and fairly tough. I wouldn't use a dear pole for this type of work. Unless, you are the very careful sort, which I certainly am not  :P

Luke/Alex,
Is there any risk of breaking the sections at the join when seperating or assembling? What is the procedure for assembling/disassembling? Do you need to apply the PTFE spray every time you use the pole? ALso, I have heard of using tape on the joins, why is this done, and is it a good idea? DO you still need the PTFE spray if you use tape?

What goosenecks did you get luke? I see a plastic adjustable one like on other poles. I have also heard about an aluminium one that has some outreach for ledges etc. Did you get one with this pole? If so, what is it like?

SOrry for all the questions  :)
Title: Re: SUPER-LITE 2 REVIEW AND LOADS OF GOOD PHOTOS TAKEN TODAY!!!!
Post by: NWH on October 04, 2007, 10:05:47 pm
The gooseneck is very very light and having the choice of plastic gooseneck aswell with the new pole is a real bonus,in my opinion i don`t think you need tape on the sections just don`t ram the pole together. If you ram them together and use the pole at considerable height they will stick.
Title: Re: SUPER-LITE 2 REVIEW AND LOADS OF GOOD PHOTOS TAKEN TODAY!!!!
Post by: stevekennedy on October 04, 2007, 10:12:08 pm
So the original pole has an alloy gooseneck. I find that the plastic goosenecks are handy but they sometimes don't reach to the bottom of windows when working at hieght. This is partly due to the size of sill but also the bend on the pole at 60ft changes the angle and the pole tends to touch the edge of the sill and this brings the brush off the glass, if you know what I mean?

How does the alloy gooseneck connect to the pole?

Will it take an Ionic brushhead?
Title: Re: SUPER-LITE 2 REVIEW AND LOADS OF GOOD PHOTOS TAKEN TODAY!!!!
Post by: Captain Scarlet on October 04, 2007, 10:16:34 pm
yes it will take an ionics multipole brush, the metal gooseneck ( very verey light ) screws onto the pole ( vikan style thread ) and then you can put the plastic one onto the gooseneck too if you want! the sections are very very strong, there is no risk of breaking it in normal use ( have you seen the videos of Alex bashing it and sitting and standing on it ). PTFE is only neede once in a while and is provided with the pole. No tape is required, Luke

Hi stevekennedy

I completely agree with your recommendation to get a cheap smaller telescopic pole for most domestic work.  This is not the type of work that  a Super-Lite or indeed any larger telescopic pole is suited to.

The PTFE spray does not need applying with every use.  It is a preventative measure which will reduce wear on the joints throughout the pole's life.  It needs applying to the pole before first use and then, depending on use, a light re-application every 2-6 weeks.

Risk of breaking joints - this would only be a risk if trying to push in a new section with a fully extended pole that was not propped against a building (ie, being held upright with one hand with no building support).  This could lead to the pole suddenly moving and exerting lateral pressure on a partially inserted joint which would risk splitting the section it was being inserted into. (However, I have got away with it, but don't do this at home!).

There is no need to use tape on these joints unless you feel the type of work you do puts an inordinate downward strain on your pole.

Goosenecks - the advantage of the Super-Lite2 is that it allows all of our goosenecks to simply screw on to the end of the pole. There is even a deep reach G-Fit gooseneck that can be fitted to the Super-Lite which will allow you to get over window sills of up to 26 inches.  There's a lot more information on the goosenecks on our website, use the link below.

Excellent answer ALex.

I wuold never extend without the pole resting against the building.

I am looking for 60ft plus.

What is the max hieght? Can I make up the pole to the hieght I want (60ft) and then raise it? Is the lateral strength ok for this? Or do you have to attach the sections whilst resting against the building?

How do the brushes you use compare with multipole? I have heard Lewis talking about wieght issues. Can I realistically use a multipole brush with your poles? Are there any reasons why this wouldn't be a good idea? Not that I have anything against your brushes mind.

How much would such a pole cost with an alloy gooseneck? (approx 9-12 inches)

Thinking about it. Need to get some final reassurance and the all important price point.

They look a bit fragile compared to what we use at the moment (Ionics Ergolite and Universal) But If it's just me using it then I can be careful.

We have a castle that we do. We can't reach the top windows. 70ft. Would be really cool if we can do that too.

Hopefully Alex can reassure me on these final points. (and tempt me with an amazing deal  ;D)

That pole is only so many sections 4 or 5 i think and then all the sections after that are to increase the height so in theory you could go very high.

I have seen the vid. When you have a weight on the end of a pole and have it extended it changes the dynamics. There is more torsion on the pole. ALex will have tested this, I'm sure, but it would be difficult to show on a video.

When I think about it, I suppose if you can reel in a 1000lb Marlin or Tuna with it then it must up to the job  ??? Just looking for reassurance. I was also worried that it might get too whippy at height (70ft) with a multipole head on it.

I wish I could get my hands on one to try.

steve, this is not a fishing pole, it is stronger than a fishing pole. I wouldnt like to use it at 70ft! and use the brush provided because its so light. Alex will be releasing a new superlight brush soon, so watch out for that, Luke

ps. this is the stiffest produced pole there is so no need to worry about whippyness!

60ft is high, 72ft is a serious height but can be cleaned (I use an F16 fishing pole base and 6 extensions for £700 inc vat.)because the poles are light. You just keep adding parallel sections to the base. Under trial conditions I have used a one man at 83.5ft. Maybe 100ft will be attained within 5 years. For work at height no other poles come into the equation, the ergolite is a TWO man pole. I sold mine s/h and the purchaser has now upgraded to the S2. Maybe 100ft is attainable within 5 years. The prices will come down as more compettitors to the trad telescopic appear.

Excellent answer ALex.

I would always recommend that above 45ft the pole is leaned against the building and then extra sections added as required.

Working at 45ft is comparatively easy but anything over this height, it progressively becomes more difficult to work with any type of pole. We sell the pole in packages up to 56ft (60ft reach) as we feel that this is a practical and usable maximum height. Any pole is going to have some degree of flexibility and when this is happening 60ft up, it can get interesting.

These poles have been tested up to 72ft but this was more for our interest than as a recommendation. What would you need to do to get to this height? Buy a 56ft S2 and then buy 2 extra extension sections (£54 each) to get a reach of 70ft. This would be your own personal undertaking and we would not advise that you do this although it is possible. (please note that it would also invalidate the warranty on the S2).

It is perfectly practical to use the Ionics Multipole brush on the S2. The brush supplied is 220g in weight whereas the Mulitpole brush is 300g. This will make some difference in ease of use but not too much. The Aluminium G-Fit gooseneck will simply cut a thread into the socket on the back of the brush. The S2 has been used in testing with a large Vikan brush which is about 600g - we would not recommend that you use a brush that heavy, but it is possible. Have you tried the brush that comes with the S2? I think that you will be pleasantly surprised by its effectiveness, most people are.

As stated above any of our goosenecks from our range can be fitted to the Super-Lite 2, the only difference is that on our standard poles the hose goes up the inside of the gooseneck and on the Super-Lite 2 the hose is on the outside.

I have the new superlite 2 it is an excellent pole.

I frequently work at 60ft .

I would say at heights over 45ft you need to be selective with your days.

When there is any hint of windy weather the pole is like trying to fly a kite.

Strong winds forget it. 0n breezy days i use my Welmac Carbon.

Alex, if I make my pole a 60ft one will I need a bigger holdall? Luke

and what do you think of the pictures Alex?

Hi Luke,

To turn your pole into a 56ft (60ft Reach) pole you would 2 more sections, these would just fit into your holdall.

Love your pictures Luke, they are very crisp and clear. I may well use some of them on our site if that's OK with you.

thats fine Alex, use them if you want

and when I meant easy to use at larger heights I meant at 45ff, because I have no experience of cleaning higher than this. I have held a 60ft carbon fibre universal and WOW that was heavy! and also an omnipole 50ft and a 45ft facelift at Blackpool, oh and a 40ft carbontec when I had my system fitted, Luke

Could you do me a favour and NOT use the can from eBay until I have checked it out.  I have just bought one from the same guy after your post and want to check it's exact make-up as it says it's a penetrating spray 'with PTFE'.  If it is the same product - brilliant, we'll be changing manufacturer for our pole packs.  If it isn't, it may prevent the joints working properly.

I like it when forum members do product reviews but a bit of balance would be nice.

I can understand it's use for cleaning a block of flats, but I don't have any. I do have occasional high windows and am thinking about a 28' or 35' xtel hybrid, tell me why I should get a superlite 2 instead?

Your pretty much spot on there, BUT it's all about weight really. Most poles are usable if they can be kept vertical but try reaching twenty feet over a conservatory with a glassfibre pole for any length of time especially held head high and you know it. I'm pretty new to this But I know I can't use a glassfibre pole like that day in day out. They CAN be used for domestic work but they are slower to put together and take apart and carry, But you can work all day with one with minimal body strain and of course they are perfect for the highest jobs. There are cheaper ways to make a very light pole. You pays yer money and takes yer choice. Get what you pay for and all that. :)

Because the Ionic and others is telescopic it has more bend than any fishing pole. Lets say about 4ft sag difference at 42ft.
Also the 60fter is a 2 man pole.

A superlite is safer at taller heights too as it is easier to handle than your average big pole, luke

NOT on a windy day!!!!!

I had a superlite and swapped it because it would get blown around too much working on tall buildings along the coast.

I use an Ionics or Facelift at heights because on windy days these poles won't be blown around by the wind like the superlite poles which are as lite as some kites.

yeah but there is risk with a big pole that you could lose grip and it could drop ( injure or kill somebody ) if the pole is ligh then there is less strain on the body so you are less likely to lose grip, if it falls it also has less risk of killing somebody, Luke

Hi ALex

Thanks for the reply. Do you recommend using the building because the pole will break if you extend it to 56ft then raise it? or just a handling issue?

We normally extend the ergo to 48ft along the ground. We leave the last section in. Then we raise it against the building using 2 people. Then you have to extend the last 2 sections by pulling the pole back so you can reach and extend. Then you can put your foot on the hose and behind the base and lift it slowly away from the wall until it is near vertical. Once you get the balance you can move in closer to the building turning the brush as you go. Pretty hairy stuff! We use 2 people because one of us stands by to make sure the operator doesn't trip over the hose but only one person is actually using the pole.

Why would you void the warranty above 56ft? Again, is this a handling issue or is the integrity of the pole in doubt?

If it's a handling issue, I am fairly confident I can work around it as the ergo at 60 ft is a challenge. If it is an integrity issue then maybe best to stick to 56ft.

Jeff, you seem pretty confident about using it at the extra height. What is your opinion?

From experience, it is far easier to extend the pole to 45 ft on the ground, simply lift it up and then add sections.  It takes most of the strain off of the user and the pole.

Working above 60 ft - this is mainly a handling issue and the fact that we as manufacturer/retailers have a duty of care to our customers to provide a product that is guaranteed to operate well within its performance parameters.

Whilst the product has been worked with at 72 ft, it has not had a detailed analysis of it's capabilities at these heights, hence we would not at this time want to warranty the product (and the implications that this puts on us) at these heights.  It would be up to the individual to assess the risks on a personal basis.

Luke having done some research now on GT85, it really is not the right product for the job and would actually hinder the use of the pole. It is basically a wet lubricant with some PTFE in it.

You have however prompted me to further my research with some of our suppliers and we have found one of our current suppliers who can get the correct PTFE spray in 400ml cans. This will not be as cheap as the GT85 on Ebay but it will still be pretty good value. We will have this available on our website shortly.

oh good, how much will it cost? luke

Cherubs, from ionics catalogue:

Universal Carbon fibre 60ft pole weighs 11.10KG.

Ionics Ergo-lite 60ft Carbon Fibre weighs 7.5KG.

And here is the Super-lite 2 weight.

Super-lite 2 60ft weighs 2.5KG

Thats 5KG less than the Ergo-lite and 8.6KG lighter than the Universal. I rest my case, it's not often I like to battle things out but I think these facts really do make it plain and simple.

Alex, I have some questions regarding the way the poles should be stored in their holdall. Ok so sections 1-4 go into 6, then 5 and the other two extension sections are alone. But should I put the rubber base caps over the tips where the PTFE is sprayed or just at the other end and keep the ptfe ends in the little pockets? I was worried that the rubber caps will rub off the PTFE because rubber creates alot of grip/friction, Luke

Oh and me and my dad think that the holdall looks like a riffle bag!!!!

There are many ways of storing these poles.

One of the easiest ways is to have a long tray which the sections can be dropped into. I do this with some of my Super-Lite poles, I leave all the sections loose in the tray and assemble the pole by the vehicle. This is probably the quickest way of storing the pole, this way you do not need to worry about end caps or storing inside of each other. Disadvantage is that it is harder to take the pole to another spot and assemble.

Another method I use is to store the pole in the holdall. I tend to fit the bottom caps and leave the top caps off , but as you suggested put these ends in the little pockets in the bottom of the holdall. The disadvantage of this method is that it takes slightly more time to put away. The advantages are that it is easy to carry the complete kit to another spot and also it does take up less space in the vehicle.

Another method (that I do not use) that many modular pole users find works is to have mounted on the side of their van a rack of 2"-4" drain tube with caps on one end and some padding in the end. To use they simply slide each section into it's appropriate tube holder. Advantage very neat and quick, disadvantage the fact that you have to build the rack of tubes.

To all those telescopic pole users (of which I am also one) who thinks that all they have to do is to plonk their pole in the van and drive off and that this sounds like a bit of a hassle- you are right it is a little bit of a hassle! This is nearly always more than made up for though in greatly reduced work time on the job when compared with the competitions telescopic poles. We always work more quickly and easily with the Super-Lites than we do when we switch back to telescopic poles.

Recently we demonstrated these poles at a very large commercial premises at which about 6 different firms of window cleaners were working on. After a day trying out the pole one of the long-term professionals (who then went and ordered one) complained that now almost anyone could do the type of work that he had been specialising in (high level commercial) for so many years. One of the workers (55 year old chap of average height and build and who usually never works over 30ft)) was able to clean the highest section of the contract on his own with a 51ft Super-Lite, previously this had taken two operators using a 60ft telescopic pole and had taken them much longer to do.

Spending a little more time setting up is certainly rewarded with less time and effort on the hard bit - cleaning windows.

Wrap several turns of tape around the base of each section - stops them chipping if you drop them, prevents them sliding in too far into each other when stored and if the tapes not too wide they will probably still fit in the holdall when stored inside each other (fine with 35')

If you can handle a 64ft Ergolite you can handle the same height Super-Lite 2. The best thing to do is to lay out your Ergolite and measure it's actual length. Having done this you can work out what length of Super-Lite you would need. Post again when you have measured your Ergolite.

It is a standard Ionic "60ft" Ergolite. 8x8ft plus the gooseneck. I will try and measure the exact length of it if necessary. I am guessing 64ft?

Hi Steve you asked earlier about the handling of the modulars, they are unexplainably light. Typed words  do not do them justice, they are affected by high winds but you get used to it as you do with any pole. One way  to explain about the weight is for you to seperate you ergo and reassemble with just the first three sections, then immagine that it reaches 60ft  :)
here are my own weights for the ergo from my comparisons of other poles from Pros.

Ergo lite Carbon fibre  X 8ft approx weight. Pole only

1 sect     1 lb                      .455 kg
2 sect     1 lb 2 oz       2 lb 2 oz                 .964 kg
3 sect     1 lb 5 oz       3 lb 7 oz                   1.56 kg     24ft
4 sect     1 lb 8 oz       4lb 15 oz                2.34 kg
5 sect     1 lb 11 oz     6 lb 10 oz                3kg
6 sect     1 lb 14 oz     8 lb 8 oz                3.86 kg
7 sect     2 lb      10 lb 8 oz                      4.72 kg
8 sect     2 lb 12 oz    13 lb 4 oz                6.01 kg

Using any pole at 60ft is an art and difficult as you have found out. The modulars are a true joy and pleasure to use. Maybe it needs its own topic but Alex has covered it pretty well. ps I think the F16 may be lighter than the S2.
Oh ....theres another modular due out on Friday.

Aint had hands on a S2 so cannot really compare, similar you havent had hands on the other pole.
Bash it against a tree- not my pole,  its for window cleaning !
Could I if I was the manuf. ? err  ... Yes.

Absolutely right!  The only reason I was able to repeatedly smash the S2 into a tree was that I am the manufacturer and if for some reason the section had splintered into oblivion I would have gone into the workshop and pulled out another section.  I treat the poles I work with, with great care and respect.  These poles are designed for window cleaning and should be used for that purpose, not for stunting tree growth.  Similarly, I wouldn't spend £1600 on a E2+ (45ft) and then take a section of it and smash it against a tree, even if I thought it could cope with it.

The reason we chose to publish the 'tree' video is that it very quickly shows just how tough these poles really are without having to rely on just our say-so.

Sounds like we have some competition come Friday  :)

Alex the only trouble I had with this pole was I used all of the ptfe spray in one go, it is only a 70ml bottle, for £4 I ordered a 400ml bottle of ptfe spray from ebay!! apart from that everything is great, Luke

I have trialled the GT-85 from Ebay and it is definitely not suitable for the purpose as it is a wet lubricant.

We have now sourced the PTFE spray in 400ml cans and these are now in stock for £6.50. These will last a lot longer than the old 70 ml size and offer much better value.
