Am wondering the best way to set us up.
Does anyone else run a (husband and wife) partnership)?
Is that the best, least complicated, low tax way, or is there a better way.
Thanks
Pj

Dont do it :o
Late starts, PMT, constant whinging, muscle problems and us women dont like to see that in a man - LOL
I dont help as much as I used to Pj but its the only way we found to keep reliable staff and maintain our standards.
I am still yet to find a trolley that holds enough water and can be easily moved around. Backpacks were too heavy for me to carry when full and did not last long enough to use on a trolley (sorry Tosh !!!). I do commercial bottoms only.
Tax wise, unless she works for free or is a partner (in which case she will be taxed anyway) you will have to set up a PAYE system for her as an employee so no real tax benefits.
Dont forget you will have to have Employees Insurance irrespective of who she is.
I suggest her going self employed. Pay her own Tax and NI and get her own PL insurance.
Good luck Pj's wife, I dont envy you having to put up with Pjs awfull jokes all day. ;D

my wife worked for me for a few years before we had the kids , not really a bad idea but we never had anything to talk about eves / weekend , which didnt bother me , but did her ! im seperated now so dont take any marital advice from me , except that " my wife doesnt understand me " !!!!! ???

I see a lot of w/c doing it now, it just makes good sense. The money comes into the home and your not paying a partner. If you are like me then the money goes in the bank for the family so it dosnt matter who earns it so long as its there for everyones use. Think of how much work you can get through.
I have yet to convince her of this.

My Boss helps me sometimes, and when she does we can get through loads of work and double our income.
Go for it Pj ;D

Yep, its seen as a very glamorous job for a woman. Bad hair, split nails, cold/hot... the list goes on.
May I suggest a bribe - LOL Works well as long as its a worthwhile gift ;)
My Boss
He He Jeff. Sounds about right in most husband/wife partnerships ;)

Set up a limited company. 2 directors & a company secretary. Company sec can also be a director so only two people needed. 50% shares each. Pay yourself DIVIDENDS not wages or salary. The tax advantage is Fabulous (I do it as I am a director already). A good accountant will set the limited company up, you can even have your registered address at the accountants office.

Thanks for the help guys and gals
Not sure what 'commercial bottoms' are Sarah :o
Don't misunderstand me, we've worked together for most of the last 20 years, but she has been in and out of other jobs, this time it's for real so, I was wondering if there were any advantages.
We have a pre-nuptual agreement just in case I make a bloomin fortune ;D
Thanks Lizzy, I've just read your post as I was posting this.

Ground floor windows on commercial jobs only - obviously Pj ;D :D ;) :-*

I'm sorry to read about these dysfunctional families!
It was genuine question, originally. Perhaps I should have put it in the chat section titled 'lonely hearts'. Not meant sarcastically.
We've done just about everything together for almost 29 years!
I wouldn't change a thing.............
Any more advice....financial, preferrably?

Back on topic Pj are e you asking for projected earning for an additional worker ? or Tax saving advice ?
Sarah
-
Aha, a married woman!
Tax savings, always. Not tax evasion, tax avoidance.
Pj
-
My tips....
Make sure she earns under the Tax & NI threshold ;)
Self employ her to save on P & E insurance. ;D

Go for it. My mrs is a partner, pays her own tax and Ni contributions. She does bottoms only with her backpack on a trolley. I filll it for her as required. I love working with her, laughing and joking all day. DAI

Sarah, PJ & co
If you do employ your wife make sure they DO pay National Insurance , even if it is only a pound , If they pay NI it contributes towards there pension years.
Also if they are sick they can claim sick pay , or maternity pay if they are pregnant.
Also make sure you have got Employers liability that way if theey have an accident at work they can claim on your policy.
Dont take shortcuts.

Yes it's hard and at times i would like some company but i just plod on

Do you have an accountant? If so he should have advised you years ago to make your wife Self Employed and put money towards her tax allowance.
Even if an accountant was to charge you £500 you would have saved this in tax.
-
My wife worked at another job till this summer, tax paid, pension too. ;)
I stopped using accountants 20 years ago, have done it all ouselves since.
£500 to check my orderly books and say, 'very nice'!
Thanks
Pj

Mine costs £130 ;D
The thing is, they know all the loopholes to get tax liability down.
If you do become a partnership, you will have 3 sets of figures to fill out.
Yours, wifes and partnership.
Admitted you need someone you trust, I have known mine for over 20 years, but they are invaluable when you earn over 20k as you tax liability becomes serious. If you earn 10-15k I wouldnt bother, the tax office dont check up anyone less than 15k.

Just thought I'd resurrect this for two reasons - all these folk who never post anymore and are there any husband wife partnerships and how are they going?

Works a treat! My wife does all the admin, I make the tea, read the paper, go out to do the odd quote and generally potter about, or not as the mood takes me. ;D
-
wife joined me nearly 2 yrs ago, was a legal secretary,
plus points - more money, more time with each other?
bad points - sickness, not as strong, only does bottoms, pmt, argueing, lazyness rubs off on you. too much time with each other? no extra definite income in the bad times ie, bad weather.
DONT DO IT!

what annoys me is my wife worked for years with different national cleaning company's as a cleaner then supervisor and know's exactly how long and how many staff would be needed for a cleaning contract but she wont entertain the self employment or extension of my business into contract cleaning but hey ho thats how it goes sometimes ::)

I know how you feel m8,
I could also own a hair salon and a clothes shop by now :(

My wife has been my partner for about 12 years. The only thing she woulnt do is work off a ladder. Other than that she's better than any man I've worked with wfp and trad.
What happened to Pj I must of missed that one.
Simon.

I'm still alive Malc!
Yes my wife is my partner my partner is my wife . Easier than I first thought. We've worked together for 27 years but never formed a "tax" partnership. Mainly due to misleading complicated mis-information. We got it going officially back in 2006, it's gone well just hope present economic cutback drive doesn't send things back to Dickensian London poverty.
Added: Just noticed - 12 posts :o probably more like 12,000 :-[

It is working extremely well for us. I don't think working as a Partnership particularly helps anything. The main reason for Partnerships (unless it's a 'sleeping' partner) is that it normally ties in with a Partnership agreement - not sure you'd want that as husband and wife?
We are just separately self employed and it seems to work absolutely fine.
Customers do like seeing a lady about - it definitely leads to more customers!
go for it :)
-
Just thought I'd resurrect this for two reasons - all these folk who never post anymore and are there any husband wife partnerships and how are they going?
So, in answer to your resurrected question - We formed a proper partnership and it has indeed been the best way to go for us.
Although I do look in on you all I hardly ever post anymore because I find with so many posting these days the topics go off in a hundred different directions, it makes it hard to help those genuinely asking, and not much new to learn from either. I don't go on the "chat" section anymore, I'm too busy, waste of valuable time.

I have around 40 shops done weekly, some twice weekly, all require an invoice. My better half sorts all this out, delivers the invoices and then collects all the cash on Saturday mornings from 9.am onwards while I finish the round. Any late payers and she kicks up a real fuss which is great. She has a job of her own weekdays so residential is all down to me.
-
yeh we get on fine no moaning she does a better job then me and she charms the old lads who have cash so works well i just get the moaners
