Only lost tuesday to the rain this week...
Apart from the odd heavy shower it's been OK to work in the North West the rest of the time...

It's very rare that I can't work because of the weather.tuesday was one of them..the rain was biblical here! ;D

But I doubt they'll be another day like that for a while....

I might lose 3 or 4 days over the course of a year but I don't work weekends and most of my working week's are 4 day weeks so has zero effect on my income!👌

Monday was good all day.
Tuesday and Wednesday dodged rain but got in about half a day on each.
Today I thought I'd get rained off, but went anyway. Sat in the van a lot but again got about half a day in.
Tomorrow looks good and mini-Malc is working with me so planning on catching up.
Able to work til 4.30 now which has helped.

Got half a day in today. Rained off Tuesday. I haven’t got the motivation like I used to. I don’t really care much these days about work.

One more winter for me and that’s it; 3 Pacific/Maldives/Indian Ocean holidays a year for me after that, a spot of bear spotting in Canada and my astrophotography. Mustn’t grumble, it all worked out in the end  ;D ;D ;D

Bad weather is bad weather - no residential cleaning if its raining - day off, no stress

The arrangement I have is pay regardless I might have to rethink that already this year I’ve paid out for a week due to bad weather.

Following the cold snap  before Christmas, we changed  employment contracts. Guys now get 10 days off withhalf pay due to bad weather per annum. After that it’s non payed. They all seemed happy with that.

Surprised people don't pay their staff when it's bad weather. I was planning on paying mine a fixed salary no matter what, its only right isn't it ?

I honestly thought it would be hard to find someone who would accept 3 or 4 days pay a week rather than 5 or potentially zero it's something to consider though the odd day is fine but a week would stress me out .

You’ll be fine. Take on some fascia & gutter cleans & save them for the wet days. That’s what i do with my employee. Cushions the blow. The good days far outweigh the bad. It’s been exceptional weather lately.

I dont get asked to do connys and fascias at all really plus my luck they would all ask when suns out. But i was thinking if you had staff work till 8 till 5pm (light permitting times of the year) and pay them a set salary then they should earn enough on the good days to cover days that they have off or are cut short due to weather.

Having commercial work that can be done in any weather certainly helps keep the cash flowing. Haven't lost any time this week for that reason.

First week back and I haven’t lost any days yet. Even in Scotland. 😁

Hot water, rain gear, and cracking on.

I work faster in the rain so it’s actually been a very profitable week so far.  :D

Really?we have many days here in the north west where it rains on and off during the day...surely your staff just crack on unless it's really bad and prolonged heavy rain like last tuesday?

Very few days here where it rains all day - if forecast and raining heavy at 8 then we don’t go out - if it’s showers then they go out during the rain periods they take a break until it passes

If your paying a salary then that’s not so different from me - your guys would love just work extra here and there to catch up

I am of the same thinking m8 but it’s been costing me a fortune I am going to rethink things I’ve been paying regardless of being off with weather and sickness etc, those 2 things have already cost me 1000s.
I have always said they should be paid no matter the weather etc but it’s been a joke tbh I will no longer pay someone to sit at home,I’m having to earn a lot of money after wages and fuel before I can put the kettle on 😂 it’s not gonna continue.

Then you should have a larger cushion of money in the bank from the good times to pay out in the bad , it’s all part of business  planning

Economy of scale. Having 10 of them shouldn’t be a reason/excuse.

As Darran said, it’s a two way street , you need a good relationship and understanding between employer and employee.

A local window cleaning business recently advertised for a window cleaner.
The advert noted that candidates must be prepared to work on the rain.

A couple of weeks ago they had a van in our area.. It was chucking it down with rain along with strong winds and these guys were out cleaning windows.

I must be going soft in my old age as I didn't work that day.

No they won’t Daz if the day is going to shower on and off then of course I’ll sit it out and work between the rain,I never turn up in the rain and start work the only time I’ll ever do this is obviously if it’s insides or a big conny-greenhouse wash down.

That must be the downside of having big posh houses. They dictate when you work to some extent.

My model is the opposite lots of small houses. Stack em high, if one cancels due to rain get another one.

It swings about Stoots I can have a couple of days off and make up for it by bringing stuff forward etc or bigger stuff that’s due,i can see why you’d need to work in the rain if you employ but even then there’s a point with the weather that I won’t work.

Title: Re: Been struggling with the rain this week ?
Post by: KS Cleaning on January 16, 2023, 04:10:00 pm
I don’t work in the rain either, drizzle/light rain yes, heavy rain no. I only work 4 shortish days per week so plenty time to get caught up. As NWH mentioned, I don’t lose out, if they are late in getting cleaned on one 4 weekly cycle, I just clean them a little earlier on the next 4 weekly cycle. 4 weekly customers always get at least 12 cleans per year, some get 13 as I also use this strategy for holidays.
Obviously if you are stacked with work this won’t be an option but as soon as I’m over a 4 day week I sell off some work.

I always start at 8 (unless its frozen) dark or not.

I used to start at 9, then it became 8:30 and now 8. I used to be worried i was bothering people starting that early but stopped caring now. Sooner you get out sooner you can get home.

Got very fond memories of holidaying in Hemsby m8,Pontins on the right as you head down towards the beach having houses built on it now I believe used to go every August for the snooker week 37-38 years ago with all the top names.

Fresh dumping of snow here overnight. With all the ice, then rain, now snow, it’s probably the worst winter I can remember for a good 10 years or so. Roll on spring.

Yep, that was my first winter. I remember getting to the 18th floor of a block of flats to clean the communals and the thermometer read -18°c. Fuel cap froze solid on my van  ;D

It's nowhere near as bad as January 2010.we had thick snow here that didn't thaw for weeks and weeks with temperatures as low as -15 overnight.

I had  3 weeks off as it was too dangerous to drive the van and i didnt have hot water......up to now ive had 2 days off this winter due to biblical
rainy weather.

Around 2 inches of lying snow here and its just started snowing again so I'll make a decision in the next hour whether to work or not...I will have no problem with water freezing but its driving the van with half a ton of water in the back which is the real issue(getting stuck down side roads is a real risk).... ::)roll

Full day here also but the roads were sketchy this morning, my street being as bad as anywhere, 5°c out now so should all have melted by midnight.
