So based in doncaster.
A potential client came and asked for a price for windows. I quoted 15. She said she had been given a price yesterday of 10 could i match it or lower 15. Told her no, best get the other chap. As it happens he couldnt reschedule till 2 wks time and she really wanted windows done today. So she phoned hubby n ten mins later came saw me (cleaning neighbours) and said ok.
Whilst cleaning was talking about all my services and now ive turned a 15quid job into an 140pound job.
Always be confident with your prices
-
I think £15.00 is too cheap with a conny.
-
Have you got paid yet ? for a start I wouldn't trust a person who asked if you could beat a £10 quote on a property
like that.
-
I think £15.00 is too cheap with a conny.
Sadly i agree. But in this particular area there are lads still charging 5 quid on trad work, and dispite how the house looks its not a well off area. I would love to charge min of 20 for this one, 10 mins and the job is done. So im still happy with 15.
Price is relevant to so many factors, as many of these threads have shown. Even tho i price to the area, i am still pricing at least 50 to 70% more than the local competition and still selling up. Hence the thread price with confidence. Regardless of the geographical area in where anyone works, you can still price acordingly.
-
I would say your right with the pricing although I think it would take you longer than 10 minutes

Not really Shrek, when you hear people talk about wfp being quicker those windows in the above pictures are the ones they're
talking about.
You could easily get that property done in around 10 to 15mins after a first clean, now if every window had one or two openers above a fixed pane below then you could double or treble the time to get them right depending on the trouble they cause.
-
Price seems good considering the area, see lads do these for less than a tenner everyday. I would have quoted £12 on that 15 on a good day if it was out of my way.
I was cleaning a similar property yesterday for a tenner (no conny) when next door asked me how much. I said a tenner, he sucker air in thru his teeth and said Ive just had mine done this morning and wondered if u were cheaper. I said how much does he charge? Well he wanted £11 but no way Im paying that so I got him down to 9. He then said would you be able to do mine for 8? .I said no sorry. He said why not your already doing next door's. I said yes that's sound logic I could do yours for 8 and it wouldn't take me long at all but I don't negotiate on prices other wise it just becomes a race to the bottom. Also next door will want theirs doing for 8, then word will get round the street and everyone will want it doing for 8. Then before you know it im earnning less money for more work. He looked quite bemused i had given him such a long detailed answer and He huffed off. Seriously trying to save a quid by switching windy why
-
My minimum is £10 , no matter what , no matter who . Not bothered if I get turned down as I would resent doing it otherwise and then dump in the end . Some custys need to realise it's 2016 not 2006
-
I do one the same as that 35 quid. For 10 quid its a flat with 3/4 windows.
-

I'd struggle to get that done in 10 minutes, maybe I rinse to much or I'm too thorough, think I need some speed lessons

That's some money for a property like that, just think 30 of those properties could easily be done in two days giving a weekly
turnover of £1050 or if my maths is correct your could have a turnover of £44100 a year for just working 84 days.
Not joking if that was the kind of gold to be earned cleaning windows in my area you wouldn't be able to swing a cat without
hitting a window cleaner. lol.

People have a choice to "price confidently" with the aim to only take on well paid work or the other option is to work yer arse off all day long for the same amount or less. I know which one I would rather do out of choice.
No matter what services you offer there will be others that will offer to do it cheaper and some potential customers that want it done for next to nothing too. However there are probably more potentials that don't mind paying more so don't be in the mindset to go in cheap just to win work as that is where many go wrong. As the saying goes "If you win every job you quote then you should stop and think are too cheap"
The amount of times I've gone in what I think is a really high price because I don't really want the job for one reason or another trying to put them off and still won the work is starting to do my head in. Maybe I'm still too cheap who knows ? ::)roll
-
I believe price can reflect the area you work.
while some say they want £15 and others want £35 I really believe it depends what part of the uk your in.
I just had a quick look on right move a house like that in Doncaster looks to be around £250k that same home in Hertfordshire where I"m from is £450k upwards depending on what part of Herfordshire so its all relevant.
Both areas if you price confidently,do a good job,are presentable and likeable a good price can be achieved.

I think £15.00 is too cheap with a conny.
The picture shows 6 small windows and a small conny. Probably 15 mins work.
-
I do one the same as that 35 quid. For 10 quid its a flat with 3/4 windows.
The clue is in the statement- only one?
-
personally id charge £20 for that property (8 weekly) but charge what you want for the job.
i have quite a few like these all compact.i easily clean 2 an hour so £40 an hour, sometimes £50 an hour. ;)

I take it by coming out with these statements you both know the area and what its possible to achieve working in it ?
-
We have a minimum charge of £20.
A house like this would be £25 - £30 (8 weekly) depending on what car they have on the drive :)
But it wouldn't take us only 10 minutes... We clean windows properly ;)

You can clean windows properly quickly or you can clean windows properly slowly that's up to you, but when you
work in an area where people aren't willing to pay £25 to £30 for a property like this then it pays to be able to do them
quicker.
-
Where I am£10 would be the going rate you would be vary lucky to get £12
-
Seriously? If I could only get £10 - £15 for a house that size I'd either move or pack in altogether.
-
its a 4 bed house with a double garage.it cant be such a bad area. ;D
i cant believe how much some window cleaners are prepared to work for.there are guys charging £8-£10 for similar properties near where i work.(2 trad guys in a car).they come from miles away too.

I'm joking but by agreeing that it was too cheap you showed a lack of confidence.
If you'd stuck to your guns and said £15 was the 'best' price you could get then you'd be pricing confidently. Being dearer doesn't mean you're more confident.
I'm dearer than many round my way but still way too cheap as my confidence is undermined by what they charge. Customers have an expectation and we don't want to shock them.
Pricing on what others charge isn't really showing confidence in yourself, is it?
Sorry for the English lesson; go and enjoy your pork melt!
-
It'd be a PITA if she cancelled next month though as the other guy has managed to fit her in who charges £10 , I find the ones who ask for a cheaper deal don't usually last long as they're always on the lookout for someone cheaper . But stick to your guns , raise the bar , be better than everyone else, strive for perfection and hopefully one day everyone will follow suit

In a way your right as our confidence is determined by what's going on around us but that gives us a choice, do we take the lower
prices or go even lower or do we take the higher prices and up them a bit more.
For me the later option shows more confidence, as for Nathan well he believes he is charging well above the average price for
his area and for me that shows confidence.
Could he get more, could any of us get more ? who knows and unless we all start upping our prices until a large percentage
of our customers start cancelling our service then we will never know if we have pushed the prices to the limit.
-
My point was that he was told it was too cheap and he replied 'sadly, I agree'. And then he mentioned what others were charging.
But that's more about confidence than pricing.
He was confident enough to stick with £15 but not enough to push for what he'd be happy with,
But I think his real lack of confidence was in agreeing with James Purewash. I don't think he was sure enough of himself- on a forum- to say that he was happy with the 15 notes.
I would be!

Sean K, spot on with your analysis.
In an ideal world how many of us are happy with the price we give but still would like an whole lot more. Like in the situation i mention. Yes i am happy with the 15 i quoted, yes it was said in confidence, yes its higher than all my competitors and yes stuck to my price and did not wafer just to get the job. However, would i like 20 or 25 for the job, of course, who wouldnt. But also as my first post mentioned, i turned that 15quid job into a 140quid job, so was i happy with that, certainly. Did i lack the confidence to sell up, thinking she wouldnt bite as originally she wanted a quote of 10? NOPE!!
will she dump me next month, maybe......unlikely....but maybe.
My charm and great rapport (?my spelling sucks) i had with her and what made her agree to additional work? My confidence in selling and she was impressed with the QUALITY of work that i was doing! to me its a win, win
-

No, there's nothing wrong with your confidence.
I'm glad you got the job(s).

Colgate toothpaste works for me.

Seriously? If I could only get £10 - £15 for a house that size I'd either move or pack in altogether.
I think people pay too much attention to what others charge. To me that would be a £27 house. £22 for the house and £5 for the conservatory and I do loads like that at that price. There would be others around here that would do it for £15 but I don't care. Like you, if that's all I could charge I'd do something else.
-
It wouldn't have mattered if the OP had stated £35- the usual suspects would have then charged £65! ;D

A good example of what I come accross quite often as was at a small 3 bed semi quote last week which I found out as we were talking they already had a trad window cleaner charging 5 squid 4 weekly.
The front has a garage attached to the front wall of the house so the trad guy clambers on that to get to one front window to clean. The back has a ridged roof ground floor extension across the back so the trad guy also goes clambering over to get to the back windows. All that hassle for a fiver I'm thinking.
Also in conversation the last time they had the guttering cleared a lad done it clambering about on the house roof for 20 squid front/back.
Hmmm...I thought this is going to be a total waste of time
Anyway after doing a free guttercam inspection and showing them they needed clearing. Going into detail what methods I would be using and confirming what they wanted doing I said "I'm not cheap but will do a proper job" as a primer before they would likely die of shock giving them my price.
Quoted £180 to clear the guttering & FSG clean
+ £20 to take down an old sat dish high up on the gable end wall.
Can you guess what they said?
Believe it or not they said "when can you do it" so the point I’m making is don’t be put off by cheap prices and have the balls to still ask what you want for the job no matter what.
-
Seriously? If I could only get £10 - £15 for a house that size I'd either move or pack in altogether.
Yes but thats said from the perspective of working in an area with better prices. So your living expenses are probably more.
In my area these houses would be 10-15 and that's high end there are guys cheaper.
That said I could turnover 200 a day doing these working about 9-3 so I suppose it depends on your living expenses and eat you expect to earn. But round here 200 a day is a good wage for an essentially unskilled trade scrubbing some glass with a brush
-
I would move
-
Prices are relative to many factors as sooo many of these threads about price shows.
A huge factor is cost of living etc etc.
This post isnt directly related to the price i quoted and was happy to quote or else i would have quoted a different price (obviously)
The intention was highlighting not to be put off by asking the higher price because of competition etc or asking for a lower price just to get the job. Smurf's post above highlights that as well.
So all the ones going on about what they would charge, if thats the best you can charge in relation to competition etc then great, well done (as greographical factors ie cost of living will show a huge difference in price. I would charge 20 odd for house, somebody else in their area may charge 40 and pimp that.)
Right, rain mack back on, and out to smiling n earning in the great yorkshire rain.........

I got a phone call two days ago regarding a conservatory roof cleaning enquiry. Anyway, I went out there today and had a look. A little tricky on a couple of the roof elevations as there's two valleys, however a days work, in and out. Its not huge.
She told me her existing window-cleaner quoted her £50.00. My quote was £330.00 Its booked in for two weeks time.
Price confidently.

Am I missing something!
If you picked that house up and put it in Sandbanks Dorset (reputedly the 4th richest real estate on the planet) it would be worth a mint and £50 every 4 weeks, thank you very much. Move it 6 miles up the road and all of a sudden it's only worth £23 every 8 weeks. That's how it rolls. I believe that location really does make a difference. I agree about the confidence thing, I have got loads of soffit, gutter work (that I hate, hate doing) because i've got dodgy elbows (hoping they would say no) and the buggers said yes!!
I think be confident (try it on a few times and see how you get on) but don't be embarrassing. If you can justify your cost to the customer then that is fair enough. It's always good to try and get a better rate, but this usually only comes when you are near to capacity and don't give a t00ss! ;)

That's still a tird if not less of what thomas sanderson would charge so is a blooming bargain if you ask me ;D
Best to book that one in on an overcast/rainy day or yer going to boil dry in the heat otherwise. :-*

But anybody can sell a car, it takes many years of study and training to be able to clean a conservatory roof and only one in a hundred thousand has got what it takes, well in certain parts of the country this seems to be the case. lol.

Move to another area, but if, as you say, moving is somehow 'far removed from reality' then jack in window cleaning altogether.
There is no worthwhile profit margin in £10 for that house, regardless of where it is in the country. That's the reality of it. £15 is better but still not enough.
For me pricing shouldn't be about confidence, it should be about numbers. How much money is my time worth (a), how long will it take (b).
a x b = price.
No matter any other mitigating factors like location, car in the drive, how much they tell you someone else is charging or whether on not the owner is a hottie. You'll get less customers but a high number of customers shouldn't be your target.

Get a grip on yourself Soupy defending a statement not worthy of a ten year old, I would charge £15 for that property
and could easily do 15 or more of them in a day ( have seen small semi's with more windows ) now even after costs tell me what
job could I get where I could make this sort of money without needing to be highly educated/ qualified
If all I could get was £10 I could still make a good living as they would only be getting £10 worth of work.
Now don't get me wrong I know in places like London £200 to £300 a day turnover isn't going to look as good as other parts of the country as I have been informed that even working in McDonald's can get you £25 an hour down south.
Seriously jump ship/do something else, I doubt if most of these air heads could even fill out an application form. lol
-
It's usually these same air heads who also spend days on here trying to save a fiver on a pump!

Soupy, that's a contradiction in terms. If you haven got confidence you're pricing won't reflect any sense of worth you may or may not have. The boys who put in £10 for a £20 house are the ones who don't know their worth. Little belief in themselves.

Seriously jump ship/do something else, I doubt if most of these air heads could even fill out an application form. lol
What you are talking about is variant (a) how much money is my time worth. If you want to undervalue your time because you live somewhere crap that's up to you. Your van has wheels use em.
More childish talk (roll eyes) did I say I live somewhere crap ? if I was to price on how much I value my time then I wouldn't get
any work.
You see in my world even though people have money then still want value for it and unfortunately there are plenty of shiners
who can offer that value for a lot cheaper than I think my time is worth.
Now if I worked in an area where people believed they needed to pay twice or three times what I charge to get a decent job
done then I would be a fool not to charge it.
Yes I could take to the road and try and find an area where a shortage of decent shiners has pushed the prices up but would I be
any better off when the extra driving time and expense is added on, maybe who knows.
That said even though £200 to £300 a day is a lot less than what I value my time its still a hell of a lot better than I could get
doing many other jobs so I cant complain.

If I priced based on what my time is worth I wouldn't work for the pittance that both soupy and Bladder charge either so I would inevitably be unemployed. The only good and reliable thing about these threads are that they never fail to entertain! ;D

Love the....move to another area quote..
someone far removed from reality
That was me.
I actually did move to a certain area in order to start my business, fortunately it wasn't too far from friends and family.
I actually said it more as a joke as of course people can't just move.
Prices vary massively for buying a property within 10 minutes of each other so of course prices for window cleaning in certain areas of the country will be different. However, you could still charge quite a bit more than others and have quality work.
Do Gardiners price their stock differently for people buying from up North I wonder..?

Yes they do , I'm up north and bought an Slx from gardiners 40% cheaper than if I put a southern address . as long as you put the voucher code in at checkout , then you get it cheaper

I have a slightly different view. There's a lot of talk on this thread about our time and our value. I think that's looking at the wrong thing. We should be pricing according to what the customer is prepared to pay. Yes, it needs to be profitable enough for us to want to do it but the basis should be what the customer is willing to fork out. That will definitely vary across the country so you're bound to get variation in pricing. You can, of course, make yourself worth more to the customer by not being a bottom-dwelling-tracksuit-bottom-wearing-jailbird-scruffy-knuckle-dragging-neanderthal but regional variations are still certain.
If someone can make a decent living from doing that property for £15, what's the problem? If that's what the market will stand, all power to people who make a living doing them.

Went to look at a new car today, nothing special but one dealer quoted £35,700 and another dealer quoted £42,250 for the same car- guess which dealer I chose?
But anybody can sell a car, it takes many years of study and training to be able to clean a conservatory roof and only one in a hundred thousand has got what it takes, well in certain parts of the country this seems to be the case. lol.
That's probably about right. Not many more than one in 100,000 would have the equipment.

I wish, if there where only 10 equipped shiners per one million population I think we would all be rolling in it and this
forum would go from the £500 to the £1000 a day forum.
That said there would still be some on here where a £1000 a day for one man would still be peanuts. lol.

Well the point is that not anyone can clean a conservatory roof. If I searched Google for local window cleaners to clean my roof I'd struggle to fiinf more than a handful and of those I bet half wouldn't be interested. I wouldn't quote for a one off for a non customer at the moment.

Is inconsistent pricing not a bit of a pain with the franchisees? We cover a relatively large area (it's more sparsely populated up here) and obviously there are some well off areas some, not so much. We try to be consistent across the board, you have to be, to ensure fairness between the rounds.
-
If you work in a sparsely populated area then that's why you object to £15 for that job, because time is money. Some would object to that price in some parts of the country is busy cities, where you could spend your time in traffic jams. Again time is money. It is not unusual to have a weeks work all within a mile or two of houses like that. In this instance I would do them all day long at that price, but if I had a ten minute drive to the next one than I would make the customer pay for that time, pushing the price up by at least 25%.

Yeah, I'm pricing that assuming it's in an estate near to other work. If it were rural and there was travelling time it'd be waaaay more.

Not for now as we've not really spread our wings from the local area yet. I'm sure that at some point it'll come.

Is that maybe why you are getting less return on your leaflets Vin? I did ask that on the other thread about leaflet return rates.. I just wondered if you have a lot of work already in a particular area, or if there may also be more competition?

Do I take that having read your posts on this subject that you have franchises in Scotland? If so then that may be of interest to me in the future, and may widen my partners job search...

Don't know, but as we do around one in a hundred of the properties in the area, we're only scratching the surface. As for competition, no noticeable change. And the oddity about the change in response rates was that it was overnight. I graph loads of data as I need to see patterns and after versus before a particular weekend calls in dropped off a cliff. Not to zero but very noticeably down.
