Just to lighten the mood on here....... And please for the love of all that is........... Don't turn this thread into something to do with vision. :D
Everyone likes a video and good technique discussion.
Few things to note;
- This is a monthly clean, so very clean windows to start with.
- The window directly above the conservatory is frosted, so I rinse on the glass.
- The ledges are very deep, so I don't have to allow much drip time on the top windows.
- I use a higher flow rate than most. (2.8 litres per minute at the brush head and 3 mill pencil jets)
- Property is a 4 bedroom detached, with conservatory and takes me just over 10 minutes to clean.
;D

Oh and the pole is,
Gardiner extreme 18, carbon gooseneck and soft supreme brush.
-
Never rinsed the bathroom window :o
-
Never rinsed the bathroom window :o
See my above bullett points. Frosted glass doesn't need rinsed IMHO.
-
Never rinsed the bathroom window :o
The bathroom window was rinsed, it just wasn't rinsed an extra time with the brush off the glass:)
-
Yes seen that video already, very impressed and it shows how quick you can go when you have the confidence.

Damn it Sean, I was waiting for something negative. You've let me down.
Or is it a double bluff. ;D
-
Jonny have you tried leaving out that last stage when you lift the brush off the glass?
-
You were fortunate not to encounter any bird poo or insect marks. That rarely happens in my experience.
-
Is it a relatives house jonny?
I see you shot another vid there..
Also, a wooly hat in June! You Scots are wimps ;D
-
Why not use a valve? What a waste of water and additive :o
I reckon you do double the arm movements that I do - you're going to suffer in old age :)
-
Jonny have you tried leaving out that last stage when you lift the brush off the glass?
I have peter and still have got good results without rinsing off. I'm just a bit too OCD with it though.
Your right what you say though.
You were fortunate not to encounter any bird poo or insect marks. That rarely happens in my experience.
Really? That is not normal for me. Mayb a few houses a day that I have to spend extra time on, but definitely not many.

It is chris. For video purposes It means I can check the results and make sure I can for definite say the results were spotless. A lot have said I can't be spot/streak free working at that speed but I can promise that they were. :)
And yes, it is a wooly hat. It was hale stoning here a few weeks ago. Lol. 8)

Why not use a valve? What a waste of water and additive :o
Valve is on the end of the yellow hose.
I'm still waiting on a water saving device that gets added to the bottom of the pole. I don't like extra weight at the top of the pole.
-
Wow that was fast! Total respect for showing us a video, to do a 3 bed semi with conservatory takes me about 3 x as long! :o
-
Nice work.
I would have gone top right, top left, top middle to allow a little more dripping time.
I have the pole hose/reel hose joint in a holster so I can turn off the water either between windows or (eg) when going from top middle (left in your case) to bottom right. Also wouldn't have to go back to pick up tap at the end.
I'm generally not so diligent on rinsing as you - I turn the flow low (with my holster tap) and run along just under the top rubbers, not usually all the way down.
The above comments are for a 4 weekly repeat clean with no birds muck or spiders nests to clear.
-
Its a good video, theres two main things i do differently though...
Switch water off and wipe the excess water off the sills (tops)
And in the tops i would have done the window above the conny last as its not dripping in any windows you'll clean (edit - like gold)
Probably would have done the conny before the other downstairs windows (drip time)
But it defo shows clean time when you're confident...
-
I'd have done virtually the same as you,
But...............
Hat and Gloves 3rd June :o :o
-
I would do top 3 windows left to right, then down to do the front and right hand side of conservatory (by which time top right window had stopped dripping)then bottom right then finish other side of conservatory then bottom left then run around to the front of the property do the front windows. (I have to run because I would only get £9 to £10 for this type of house ;D)
-
Would be great if everyone on here who WFP's to put a video of their technique on here, would be educational ;D

I think only the brave ( or in my case stupid) are up for it. ;D
-
I thought you were sailing a little close to the wind with regards the vents. For a regular monthly clean taking any longer is entirely unnecessary.
-
Good video btw,IMO to much rinsing I rinse on the glass with high flow. Not that you need to go any quicker but if they were out there I would have flown round that house, the first upstairs window you did was overkill only IMO
-
I would say that was an average speed for monthly...noticed bottom right window you cleaned
sill then rinsed glass afterwards..i personally think sills should always be cleaned last.
-
Think Id be 20% longer , I wash the windows more and rinse more .
But maybe I'm wasting water and time .
Watching this gives me a idea to speed up , or should I say don't wash as much .
The lad who helps me occasionally , is way over the top and is obsessed with detail . Which isn't a bad thing .
" A video of my helper - he would still be cleaning that conservatory now
Lol

If the bottom sills are especially dirty and some of mine can be, even on 4 weekly cleans, I sometimes give them a dry wipe with a cloth before I clean the window, then a quick flick with the brush after cleaning the window, stops all the crud and spider webs getting stuck in the brush.

i use triggers on all my poles, i get them from cleaning spot, saves so much water its unbelievable. other than that apart from doing it in a slightly different order all is good, speed wise don't see an issue.
-
Houses are the same in a street I do, although the top ledges hold a lot of water and drip for ages if you don't scoop it off, bottom ledges are covered in black dust and the vents are worth staying away from. Picked up a new one that was paying £4.50 without the cony. Tradder left the windows in a right mess. I reckon I could take all his work at £3.50!
Skipped some of the video as you were taking too long :)

I was talking about when using pole :)...do the same sometimes with cloth before poling

Would love to see a video of gary999 doing his method.
May have to inform youtube first though due to the length of the video ;D ;) :P
I have found the perfect house todo my video for you J. Just need the time to do it :)

Cool. I look forward to it.
I wish others would do the same and post it here. Seeing how other people work really interests me.

Good Tip, i do the same, just saves less crap going on the brush.

You save time and water giving the bottom cill a cloth wipe .
Saves crap on the brush

Im lightening quick...remember I only have to blade around 25% of glass...warmer weather
makes it easier and on houses with hydrophobic glass where I blade I don't rinse ,with the added blading
on average it takes me around the same time as the above video.....idont amble round likeJohny
very irritating ;D

I think cleaning the sill then rinsing brings a risk of dirt off the brush being carried onto the glass. I rinse then clean sill last.

There's so many factors that determine speed of cleaning but I think the most important one is the area worked in.
If you live in an area where you can only charge £8-£10 for a 4 bed with conservatory then you need to be speedy gonzalaz to earn good money.
If your in an area, which luckily I am, where the minimum price for a 4 bed with con is £15 then you can do alot less in a day for a good wage.
Il be honest, I'm not rich, I don't have a huge business with loads of employees, I'm a sole trader with target earnings of around £180 a day.
To achieve that I only need to do around 10-12 houses a day.
Am I guilty of over cleaning, probably yes but because I can.
I'm happy with what I earn and know what I earn is easily achievable whilst doing a deep clean at every visit.
Of course my entire round isn't built like this, or my life would be easy.
I have days made up of smaller houses where I need to do more to make my buck or other days that involve travelling further so less time per house.
I adjust my speed accordingly for these days.
I can go quick if I want to, like anyone can, but I much prefer those days where I have less to do but still earn the same, and can relax and get on with my job.
Today I have 9 houses to do, all on the same estate, should hit my target earnings by about 2pm. Then to finish off have a con roof as a nice little extra on top.
Happy days!

Christ an honest reply :o :o :o :o :o ;D

Thats what I've got to do today. Well, 8 houses and a small connie roof. I might take some pics and post them later, I used to like it when guys did that.

I declare everything so don't mind sharing.
The moral of the story though is that target earnings are far more important then speed.
There is no right or wrong speed, as long you earn what your happy earning then you know how quick you need to work based on area, tools used, travel time etc.

We have an easy life quarter light :D
Your somewhere near Basingstoke if I remember?
I'm in aldershot, not far from you..
-
Chris your post would be more relevant if Jonny was busting his back, I would say you put more effort into each
of your properties just by over cleaning.
Your right it is about how much you want to achieve per day but that doesn't mean you cant or shouldn't do it in the most effective way possible.
-

Great video thanks for posting it.
It would definitely be good to see some others.

Another part timer like myself :) I average 10-12 houses and I start late rarely before 10am
I always work at max speed...if had 9 houses on a run I would be finished before 2pm..quicker
my work is done more time I have to myself.
Its not always about the money :)

I often get told by my customers "your very thorough", or "very particular". It's for that very reason there happy to pay that bit extra.
If I flew through there windows in 10 mins, knock on there door and say "that's £18 please", can you imagine the resentment they would soon start feeling towards me lol.
Almost all work iv picked up recently, including a large commercial, were for the same reason. "The previous guys were only here for a couple of minutes and charged a fortune".
-
Anyway enough chit chat, better get to work, got a tough day lined up ;D
Don't work yourself to hard seank :P

Yep
Yes but that also risks splashing the dirt back onto the glass you have just cleaned unless you rinse the sills with the brush on
which isn't always great for sills.
Personally if the sills where that bad I would give them a quick rub with a microfiber and then it doesn't matter which way you clean them.

I have never lost job because of speed....then again I don't lose work apart from the usual wastage.

wiping sills has been mentioned already ,my problem with rinsing glass after cleaning sills..is the potential
dirt between frame and sill which can leech out meaning you have to wipe sill again.Obviously this depends on how much dirt was sitting in first place, not always a factor on monthlys but I llike
to keep my cleaning time as efficient as I can within the system I use.

My solution for cills is a product from Gardiners called a reach around, no laughing at the back.
Saw it on youtube but found it difficult to find on Goggle search for obvious reasons.
Fixes on angle adapter, has universal thread which I fit a good quality microfibre mop head to.
Clean frames then glass then give the cills a sweep with brush. Lastly after all windows are done go round with mop and wipe cills.
Result is perfectly clean cills plus it`s good for the odd bit of stubborn marks on glass.
Down side is if you don`t wring it out regularly it gets really heavy infact usually leave it off until end.

Good vid & I would say your speed should be viewed as "normal" in respect of any experienced wfp operator. One thing that would improve your effort levels though would be a swivel. My arms & body don't move half as much as yours using a swivel neck- so maybe some time to gain but certainly easier IMO. :) Good vid though, it's nice to see a normal, honest level of working & not someone trying to prove how fast they are etc etc.
-
The speed in the video is quicker than me ,
But today ive speeded up so it's been a good video for me to view .
Gary999 , you've got a good work to life balance . Awesome ..
Me like others do too much .
It my kids are expensive lol
-
As in the video, do most of you guys rinse after cleaning all the panes of each window? As I tend to rinse each pane as I clean them, rather than going back.
Perhaps your technique means less chance of dirt from the next pane being pushed over and left behind?
Just curious.
-
I wouldn't want to live where Jonny does - too cold for snails, no birds, no insect life and no need for suncream.
Can't see any point in wiping sills with a cloth when you've just wiped the upstairs ones with the brush anyway - makes no sense to me. Same as guys who keep their brush in a bucket of water - what for?
-
Loanfoot garden's Johnny?
Get orf my patch!
;D ;D ;D
-
i sometimes leave the top frames on monthlies(and do them every other time)depending on dirt/cobwebs/type of frames etc.
i rinse each pane after the scrubbing action
i clean sills last after scrub and rinse(water off on top sills)
other than that good video! ;D

That's what I thought. It's very rare that I have a house that doesn't require extra work on a couple of panes. Spiders nests, bird poo, snail trails, insect marks. As an illustration though, it looked good to me.

After watching that im definitely ott and taking to much time using to much water time to speed up me thinks

And me

Why not use a valve? What a waste of water and additive :o
Valve is on the end of the yellow hose.
I'm still waiting on a water saving device that gets added to the bottom of the pole. I don't like extra weight at the top of the pole.

I use an aquadapter but don't like the weight on top of the brush
Have you ever broken a trigger when being clumsy (like me) putting pole in Van
I've always fancied one.
-
if you get a trigger you ll have a loop of hose at the bottom of the pole.itll drive your nuts!i used to use aqua-daptors but broke 2 in the space of a few months(screw threads snapped off!)so i binned them.
i now use a little pole hose tap at the top of the pole just before the brush.you cant turn the water off when extending or collapsing the pole but its still handy for ground floor work.i lose a bit of water.maybe 20L a day but im not bothered(i have a 500L tank).i turn the water off between windows by kinking the hose at the bottom of the pole when extended.

The loop doesn't bother me in the slightest. Recently with my 30foot SLX I've been using it without a tap and the resistance as I extended it from both hoses on the floor was far more irritating.
-
Loops used to drive me nuts when I had a tap in a holster

Funny that, on ground floor work the aquadapter is brilliant for turning the water off
Also I dont view the aquadapter as a water saving device anymore as I have a 650 ltr tank
I like to turn the water off on top Windows to brush sills and stop dripping
A tap at the top of the pole has never appealed to me, except that its lighter.

Nice vid Jonny similar technique to me but i take a bit more time , Good to see someone cleaning tops of frames , No point been shy of vents cleaning frames every time ensures a hassle free job every time and a spotless finish .
