due to issues i've had with my back over the last few months I am seriously looking into getting one of these reels http://gardinerpolesystems.co.uk/all-products/pump-hose/hose-reels/hannay-motorized-and-manual-hose-reels/hannay-metal-12v-motorized-hose-reel.html . Just wondering if anyone is using one of these , how do you find it? how did you wire it up ? any tips?
thanks in advance

I have the cox version.
Awesome reels.
-
£840???!!
I thought the £240 for the powerUP addon on WCR was a bit much - but thats just silly money for a wfp reel,.. I'm sure the Cox & Hannay reels are brilliant, but WAY over engineered for what window cleaners need & crazy expensive as a result.
-
I wish mine was only £840 ;D

How much did you pay for it?
I tried my hand building a motorised reel a couple of years back but didn't have the equipment to machine some parts to finish it,.. I've bought some new toys since then & may revisit the idea. I reckon a motorised reel is a great bit of kit, but it shouldn't cost more than a mid size SLX pole in reality,..
I wish mine was only £840 ;D

How long would one of the 'petal' type ones last?
Ive got the hannay (non motorised). It cost me £330 (from memory) 12/13 years ago.
When you work it out at cost per year it aint too bad.
Ive had to buy 2 brakes and one inlet swivel in that time. £80odd in total.

GrippaTank installed mine.
In talks at the moment with Grippa & Spring about updating the controller i had made.
It's quite simple though. Just make sure the wire is rated to the reel.
The cox reel pulls a good, 32amp.
Need to find out what type of motor is on this reel you wanna buy and at first had issues with mine.

It's not a fair comparison though. I had a controller made, second battery, custom switch gear and never installed it.

I have the power up from Jordan king, love it, real help in your day to day work, i have no doubt the Hannay and Cox reels are better quality but for £200 ? you cant go wrong....imo :)

cheers mate, having e-mailed alex about them earlier i'm on the understanding that i need 10amp rated wire with a 10 amp circuit breaker for extra safety in case the motor ever gets jammed. Is yours powered by a leisure battery or the vans 12v cigarette lighter.
cheers
10AMP rated wire? Are you sure? I would have thought that reel pulls 20 - 30 amps under load. My van now has 4 batteries. 2 leisure, 2 main.
I am testing out a controller within the next 7 - 10 days. I have decided to experiment with a different type of controller. If the controller is of no use for my needs and you buy a reel i may have a super duper controller going spare. Its just my setup is a little different from most. I have the floor cut out with rollers :)

£840 is not crazy expensive. And how can it be "over engineered"? It winds the reel in using an electric motor, that's about as simple as it's possible to get.
Anyone whose window cleaning and thinks £840 is a lot of cash (especially for something that will help you work better) needs to find another job.
I'm seriously considering getting one. Slightly worried about the power consumption though.

True - quality comes at a price & the standard petal type reels rarely last more than 5 years,.. but these Hannay & Cox reels are made for high pressures and heavy hoses,.. there's room in the market for a lighter duty one made specifically for WFP.
I'm seriously going to try my hand at coming up with something,.. its very simple mechanically & I've got the tools now - I just need the time & motivation to get it done!

These reels or similar was on eBay for £240.
Unless you have health problems I can't see any advantage to this, it takes all of 5 mins to wind in by hand, and those that think £800 is a good deal, I don't get it.
If you have £800 spare to buy a reel then you must have already upgraded all your poles to gardiners very best first as more effort would go into cleaning windows than winding a reel in.

I have the non motorized Hannay reel.It is van mounted and IMO does not put undue strain an the body. It is 9 years old and still going strong. I live in Saffron Walden. Email me if you want to come and have a look. d.dunwoody@hotmail.com

Unless i've misunderstood Alex said that everything needs to be 10amp rated, electrics are not my strong point tho
Hi p1w1
I will email you over the wiring instructions for this reel which should help explain what is needed. I will also check tomorrow exactly what cable size is needed.

that's a daft comment!

I reckon a motorised reel might save 10 minutes a day - so maybe an hour a week,.. so going by the average hourly rate here that'd be £20 - £40 extra earning potential (in extra time) per week,.. so from that point of view you could potentially increase your earnings considerably over the course of the year,... but still, £840 is mental money - for that price I'd want a remote control and self layering mechanism too at the very least.

that may well be the case, but to suggest someone who doesn't want to spend that much on a hose cart needs to get out of the industry is daft.
for the record, i am planning on buying a set of hannays myself

I can wind my reel in vary fast, but at the end of a day my elbow hurts. Its all about making the job easier

For me its not about making extra money or paying for itself, it would make my job alot easier and take away a lot of unnecessary strain on my back by not having to bend over or keep lifting the hose reel out (like i've done in the past) which will let me continue in the window cleaning game earning , so when you look at it from my perspective the cost really doesn't come into it its all about making the working day as easy as possible.

The heaviest thing I lift now is a cone. I never did my reel for speed. It was to prevent RSI and stop joints from being hammered. Last four jobs today were 90Meters of hose out and was like FFS I am tired. Then realised I have an electric reel LMAO.
i am working on my controller at the moment. We started off with 2.30mins to reel a 100M That's dead weight. 100M walked out and just dropped on floor. Reprogrammed software it's now 1.45mins. STILL loads of power left to go faster but i dunno. I have a hose guide setup. So gotta think of safety as well. I increased speed at weekend. Not keen on it tbh. Not through rollers.
However the controller I had made is awesome and will be on display at the Dorset show. It's bloody amazing. Can't thank spring enough really for it.

ive not lifted my hose reel out of my van for years while window cleaning!why dont you leave it in the van when working?its much easier mate. ;)

Well, my solution (see video above) gave me about a clean extra a day while I still used it, I reckon. And it cost me £50. And when it goes wrong, any drill would do to repair it - no having to pay for the one supplier in the world to repair it.
I'm going to get a new drill and start it again. Such a simple solution.

Vin what type of drill did you use. I've tried a few different ones (12v 14v 18v) wired up to the 12v battery and they all burned out.

I used a very cheap Silverline (I think) drill that was on offer at Toolstation (3 for £90, if I recall). 18V, wired to a couple of old batteries in series (so 24V). Unfortunately, the kid in the video couldn't cope with the instruction "if the hose snags you MUST stop winding and clear the snag". So I came back to the van once and he was standing with the hose snagged round a car tyre while smoke rose out of the drill, looking surprised. He burned out the other two as well in exactly the same way.
That's the secret. The instant a drill stops, the current flowing through it goes through the roof, so while with a hand winder you might try to pull a hose free, you must never do it with an electrical one, whether £30 or £400.

Thanks Vin, that probably explains what happened to my drills although I had them wired to 12v not 24v
