Could have been worse and started up 4 miles away...
What were you paying him out of interest

And so he will earn more money - but will take a while to get there. Plus he will have to do all the behind the scenes work too.

He'll be on here soon asking for advice ;)

No need to be condescending about it. Truth is you'd probably have done the same. Would you have had the good grace to move 400 miles away though? I know I wouldn't.

This is one of the things that puts me off of employing.
You're basically training up your future competition.
Any one with half a brain would do the same thing having seen how much money they turn over in a day, only to hand most of it to the guvnor.

Not really...The lad that works with me would have no chance of running a business ;D

This is done by so many and we always discuss the glass cleaning as if it was the end all of this job.But there is so much more to cleaning window that is never discussed. The income is plastered across this forum, but there are many pitfalls before you really make good money. Building a good round is not that easy as it takes persistent afford. The winter is a big pitfall with customer leaving, none payment. cold weather and the list goes on. etc.

£300 per week b/tax, Monday-Friday 9AM-2PM
Trust me, this guy has no chance...No money, no vehicle, no place to live - has said on a number of occasions how easy this industry is and how he could do it better...better off without IMO!
-
why was he only working part time?

Welcome to the world of choice, destiny, freedom, satisfaction, ambition and achievement.

I've always been surprised why anyone would work for somebody else!!
Not rocket science really to set up your own business!
Knock on doors,do a conscientious job and slowly but surely build up your business

That's a good wage, but some are destined to become self employed, others never, even if they were on minimum p/h

I caught up with him today, he has been housed in a house share, rent free, internet free and is given £57 per week in JSA - so has decided not to set up, rather veg out

Wouldn't have made it into anything like a buisness, you might have been lucky that he's left

never let any employee have access to your customer list . without it,they cant devastate you, with it they surely can
i sacked an ex employee so right away he starts up , imitatin me,same colour van ,saying im his brother-in-law and canvassin my customers.
but he hadnt my list so after a week or so he forgot who my customers were and was doomed from then on

That's as maybe and I agree anyone can clean a window/ start a round.
The skill is to keep it running and or growing for years to come.
It ain't for everybody.

Tlwcs+1 on that,
As a time served engineer (like myself) job work history dictated decision making, planning and gives you confidence, others have not had that experience of simply not confident or do not want to run a buisness on their own.
Yes, on the surface, anyone can clean a window, BUT it's about cleaning them time and time again at a speed that earns money, being out in most weathers and the real biggy customer relations..

Without it, they can't clean anyone's windows, either.
Even if they are in a van with you, what are you going to do, blindfold them so they don't know who your customers are?
