Ready to get a small system in the back of my van. Recently moved over from trad. I've been using a trolley but filling the barrels is a ball ache. Was looking to get a ro system in the van as we'll. What I wanted to know is do systems generally leak lots of water as I've seen a couple of horror shows from local lads vans. It's important as I can't let the floor in back of van get to wet as it has Lino fitted (it seconds in to a weekend van) . Also would a 300 litre system have to be bolted down or could I get away with strapping in it securely. Thanks
-
You can use your van no probs , i do the same as you in regard to it being the secondary vehicle , the truth is , a lot of blokes are not bothered if it leaks , mine is totally dry bar what comes from the brush heads after use , spend the time and extra money on decent connections and you wont have a problem with the wet stuff.
What van and what size tank you looking at ?

second what p@f just said.
use john guest push fittings where possible, ptfe tape all threaded connections and if you need to use a hoselock connection on anything e.g. to connect to reel , use a quality one.
I'll probably get shot down for this but I wouldn't worry about a bolted frame for a 300 L tank, buy decent haulage ratchet straps and it will be sufficient. I do similar with a 400 L upright against bulkhead. I could remove everything from my van in less than 30 mins if needed. ;)
-
As Mr Bitt just said , use your head and will be fine , i see vans with straps all the time , only far too many of them use thin straps that just as well not be there at all , just look on Ebay :o
I run a 350 upright with large ratchets and spreader plates through chassis , this backs up to full steel bulkhead , behind that is a row of 3 crash tested scott seats fixed in the same manner , then a half height steel bulkhead , then me ;)

Ive taken my tank out and just fill the foot-wells and cargo area with water now. Vans clean, but I can see the odd spot of rust beginning to appear.
-
My system has john Guest fittings and had no leaks but when it froze it was a pain to take it apart to check and defrost so hose lock are good for this purpose. Just something to think about.
-
Thanks for the reply guys.
I've got a mercedes vito swb. I was working trad out an estate viechle but just seemed a waste having a nice shiny van sitting on the drive. At the moment I get the odd leak/ spillage from the trolley or brush head etc and I'm not to worried about that. I was thinking of putting a 300 litre system in there. Not very clued up at the moment but was hoping to have the r-o in the van for convenience. Using a trolley is convenient on some houses but I'd imagine or hope having a hose reel would make the working day a bit easier????
-
Of course leaks and spillages do happen. I'm not going to lie, but good fittings and a bit of thought can limit them. e.g. the filler caps on tanks are always naff and leak without a bit of adapting.
I siliconed the thread on mine and sealed it up, removed the air vent and made the hole slightly larger and siliconed in one of these
http://www.toolstation.com/shop/Plumbing/d20/Plastic+Solvent+Weld/sd2885/Solvent+Weld+Access+Plug/p13873
works a treat and no leaks ( cut a small hole and feed a length of pole hose through the tanks cap as an air vent )
If there is a risk of you overfilling the tank also consider some "fail safe" like an overflow .

Hey Rich , is that frame at the back made from alloy and is it welded?
-
Looks mint pal. I will put a couple of pics of my van up over the weekend and see if you can put any pointers my way. ;D
-
No , its welded stainless steel , it was a made to measure order for some bloke by Varitech , he put the deposit down and never went back , i called in off chance and wangled it with the reel and a 6x18 DI for a superb £100

Great business name

If you are worried about water in your van get it covered in linex. I couldn't care if mine ever was to leak. I often hose the back of my van out to keep it nice and clean.
And Rich, whats all the black poop on the van? Is it real or photoshop?
-
What's that roller thing you've got there under the reel?

A little nylon roller and D shackle from a ships chandlers , it lets me pull to any direction from the back as it swings 180*

What van is it?
OK.
If you have car derived van (Ford Transit Connect, Berlingo etc), you will see that the cargo floor in higher than the footwells. Most vans still have the rear passenger footwell and a plate covers them to level off the cargo floor. Any water leak will get into your footwells and you will have a damp smell before long.
Recommend that you seal the floor, fibreglass followed by a top coat, and include a wall around the front and sides (where the rear doors would go) to ensure that any spilt water is contained and rather finds its way out the back doors.
If you have a slightly larger van, ie., the old Citeron Distch, Citroen Relay etc., then they generally have a cargo floor that is lower than the floor in the driver's cabin and you won't have the same issue.
-
Did someone paint all over your van? (the black stuff)
-
Spruce , thats exactly what happened with the Astra , over time the footwells filled and it ran through to the cabin area .
I ended up cutting out the raised load area , which worked out really well as the tank sat lower , it also lined up bang on with the body shell to enable me to frame it in .

What was the outcome on this...........

Did you get the van sorted out?
Cant decide on Linex or Speedliner or Protectakote now. The transit custom has a plastic bed liner fitted, so its more of a backup really.

Yes it got sorted. I got in touch with Linex directly and they got in touch with the other company involved and van has been sorted 100%. I recommend linex flooring its awesome and has a lifetime guarantee. I was compensated by the other company and feel they sorted things out professionally. I am pleased.

This was it after 6 hours of builder clean work .
The bloke got 3 weeks inside , he then came out and broke his license trying to attack me , he got community service for that , which he failed to do , so they banged him up for another 4 months .
15 year ago i would have burnt his house down (ask Rich Ham) ;)

Great van mate. Unlike most other vans, these will only go up in value ;)
-
Indeed Mr H!
Mate if someone did that to my van i would break their fingers. You have certainly mellowed over the years.
