What kind of response if any would i get on average from door knocking durring the day eg 11am till 2pm
Im thinking about door knocking the streets i already clean to get some more compact work in before winter.
Thanks Paul
-
I wouldnt bother, if youre desperate i would leaflet between those times and follow up in the evening but best way is knocking 4pm to about 7.30 imho
-
If you think that a few of the neighbours are home while your cleaning then why not.
But I would agree with Martin the evening would be the best time.
Saturday during the day might work, even go cleaning the odd Saturday to be seen in the area.

Ânything is better than doing nothing. The guys out knocking doors at the wrong time instead of sitting at home watching TV, tend to have bigger customer bases.
If you need more customers, do something about it. If it's not the best time, then when you've finished, go again at the "right" time.

Good constructive advice mate, doing something is better than doing nothing, that's what I was told many years ago when in sales

really depends on the type of area the estate is my mum lives on quite a large 1970s housing estate and most residents are in late 50s-60s now and i find loads of them in in the day due to retiring its quite strange as we hardly see any children playing anymore as most are my age or older and have flown the nest but if u tried a new estate where younger couples tend to live prob wont find them in due to high mortgages most couples work both full time
-
I'd tell ye to F off ! I detest cold callers, they are a scurge!
I agree. That's why I do flyers only. Nothing worse that watching Top Gear and someone knocks on door ;D
-
Yeah, some people are afraid of rejection.
Funny that, seems to be the same ones with problem custies. If they overcame their fear, they could get enough customers to replace the ones nobody else wants.
Funny old world innit. ;)

My thoughts exactly Duncan. I hate anyone interrupting my top gear episodes! ;D

But if someone wants a window cleaner they won't care when you knock?
-
I've never had anyone be rude to me when I've canvassed. They normally just say "No thank you!" and I leave them a card.
I wouldn't door knock in rough estates though, I can imagine some of those might be obnoxious. And why would I waste my time knocking on poor houses when I could knock in nice estates?

When did the letter F become a swear word?
-
Thanks for the replys i will give it a try on saturdays then and just do leaflets during the week when i get spare time.
At the moment i have enough work but im changing work round so their is less travel time per day plus im changing from five to six weekly early next year.
Thanks Paul
-
Paul why change cleaning schedule when you are looking for work surely that just means you need more work with a more stretched out schedule ,Thus working harder to achieve a similar income surely it is best to stick to five weekly
And concentrate on compacting your round to reduce travel , Which is what i need to do for some of my work gain more custys within the streets i work to reduce travel in the day between certain areas . Which equals more earning potential . Mike

Good point.
We work 6 weekly and have done for years. Because a lot of our Brit (army) customers are thinning out over here, we've gone to 5 weekly. I'm leaflet dropping the next couple of days, telling them I'll be calling in the very near future (about 2/3 days time) to see if they're interested etc.
The only thing I try to avoid, is knocking while it's raining. Sets some people in a neggy mood regarding window cleaning. I'm stood at the door in pouring rain, asking "would you like a window cleaner". I get very good results by working this way. Maybe give it a try?
I knock til about 6.30pm.

At the moment i have enough work for me but i want to employ next year so i was going to get more work so im running 2-3 days late most of the time so when i employ their should be enough work for the two of us.

Day time is poo! Sundays are the best
Hang on Mick, some m o n g will be along in a minute to say they'd punch people who ring the door bell on a Sunday mate. ::)roll
These are usually the guys who KNOW what every customer thinks, and also, the guys with the smallest custy base.
-
Lol yes ill get shot down but who cares ;D .
By far my best canvass days have always been sundays more people are in and people are in a laid back relaxing mood unlike on there 9-5 work days.
Im thick skinned and dont care if they want me knocking or not! I want to put food on the table so i will chase the work.
-
They make me laugh these people that won't canvass because they don't like people knocking on their own door. Canvassing is by far the best way of getting work so who cares about the odd person that doesn't like people knocking, no ones forcing them to answer the door, I never answer the door to canvassers myself but from my experience most people do and most people are fine about it. If i'd never canvassed i'd only have a fraction of the customers I have now.
Man up and get door knocking and get some decent compact work.

Im going to start trying it on saturdays and to be honest im only targeting houses 3-4 doors away from work i already do at the moment that can be done without moving the van from existing customers

So let me get this straight. You are in a business reliant solely on people to keep you in business, but when someone who has the exact same reliance on people to keep them in business you are prepared to treat them the complete opposite way that you would like to be treated yourself? Or am I to understand that you would be happy to be confronted by a dog let loose on you by your (potential) customers? ;D

yourself.

Daytime knocking is worth the effort, but what you don't want to do is tire yourself out for the evening knock which is far better.
In the daytime it is good to target well off estates with the stay at home wives.
-
I think it much better to just leave a card with some info on your services and allow a potential customer to look over it at their leisure. Sometimes a person will say yes in order to be polite or just get rid of you! Cold callers are a scurge in my opinion and most people I know find them a nuisance.
-
Most people? How do you know that "Most" people would find them a "nuisance"? Because they all think the same as you do they? If that's the case, why do I get such a good response?
Why are you so intent on putting the guy off knocking doors? What's wrong with him trying, instead of sitting on here putting a negative tone on subjects like this?
How does that help?
-

To be fair I've never found people knocking on my door looking for honest work a scurge, in fact I have a lot of respect for them going out, getting of their arse looking for work being pro-active. I would have thought being in the industry your in you would have had a little more time for people looking for work, just my opinion like.

None of my massive customer base found it a nuisance to be canvassed!
Im guessing you have an uncompact round where you never knock to compact it up then!!! More pity you. Most of my stops i clean a min of 4 fronts without moving and some as many as 12, if i didnt knock then it would be 1 or 2 if im lucky from each stop which isnt verey productive in my books.
I love people like you who are scared to knock on doors and leaflet drop instead as when a potential customer brings a recent leaflet and says is it me i simply say yes :-). They all say the same that they were meaning to call but this and that got in the way so glad i knocked. Maybe cold callers arnt the most liked people in the world but i tell you 1 thing, a potential customer would rather see the face of a windowcleaner who can explain and give a date there and then than a snazzy piece of card through the letterbox that they have had hundreds of times before from everyone else!
Minimal people canvas vs loads of junkmail through your letterbox each week! Think about it.

I personally don't like canvassers and don't canvass myself all my initial
work came from leafleting, adverts in shop windows which cost me pennies
made myself a website and got myself on every free advertising website I
could My work is all within a couple of miles of home and work I get now
in the main comes from recommendation.
Seems to have worked out for okay without canvassing :)

Yup, leave a card, and some will end up being lunched by the dog! ;D
Seriously, what is wrong with door knocking? I got started this way and nobody hurt me, swore at me or set their dog onto me. And I am from England living in Ireland!
I am a fairly laid back kind of guy, polite, friendly and not pushy. I am only there to ask if my service may be of interest to the householder. It's either a quick 'no thanks', or 'yes, how much...'. How can that cause you to consider causing injury to someone who is simply trying to earn a living?
I get canvassers knocking my door every week. I take the time to have a chat with them, whether or not I take up their offer (usually I don't).
Good manners cost nothing. Pity some people still can't afford them.
John
-
these canvassers must love you taking time out to have a friendly
chat with no intention in buying their product ;D ;D
-
I used to live on an estate that for some reason seemed to be a favourite with canvassers - at least 3 times a week I'd get someone trying to sell me Sky TV, a new electricity deal, sponsor an animal charity package or mobile phone plan (never had a window cleaner call - they must have seen the van!).
I kept my cool & was polite for a long time, but after a couple of years of my meals being interrupted & small children woken I really started getting annoyed with it so I put up one of those "No Cold Calling" signs - - and got even more annoyed when all the canvassers ignored it.
Canvassers annoy me like nothing else,.. my evenings are for me and my family,.. I know if I want to buy a product or service and I will research the best option myself - I don't need you to tell me about it!!
I personally always stuck to websites, flyers, direct mail, vehicle signage etc etc which in the long term is just as effective & doesn't annoy people!
-
Junk mail/leaflets annoy people too!
I get about 3 different leaflets a day from cleaners to takeaways etc. it realy does need to stand out to get a good response in certain areas where lots of junk is delivered!
-
Jeez, thought this was put to bed ages ago. I find it annoying when people keep a topic going when it's died 20 posts ago ;D ;D ;D
-
I built my business from canvassing non-stop and doing my own telesales. Of course the odd person gets annoyed getting their door knocked, but people like that are generally annoyed about anything and everything in life anyway (J.D is a case in point) ;D . I don't like getting cold calls on my phone from people selling me stuff but I do a fair bit of cold calling myself, I know some people will be annoyed on the other end of the phone or on their doorstep.
However, with canvassing residential and cold calling on the phone its all down to percentages. A very very small percentage will be annoyed, and you wouldn't want to work for people like that anyway. A big percentage will say no. But the ones who say yes and chat will be great customers.
My advice is to go out in the evenings and weekends as much as you can and keep knocking no matter what anyone says. Grow a thick skin and learn to deal with rejection. And in the daytime cold call commercial. I've done it, it works.
I've never done leafleting, but haven't ruled it out. Funnily enough I have picked up quite a good few customers from companies who have just leafleted, then I've knocked and its reminded them that they got a leaflet and they use us instead of the guys who dropped the leaflet!! :)
-
Could not agree more Nat. ;)
Tom ! Don't ring my doorbell nor ignore my No Cold Callers Sign! ;)

I drop and knock within a couple of days. Great results too. However, I dropped leaflets a few years ago and took about a week to follow up. At that time, some guy did take advantage and picked up a couple of days in front of me. I only made that mistake once Tom. ;)
Must admit, I've never knocked without leafleting first.

when first starting out I would go knocking during the day if it was raining too heavily to clean ... I thought a good use of time as opposed to sitting at home ... luckily I hadn't read any posts like these so didn't know any better.
1 door I knocked stands out in my mind ... it led to several referrals which snowballed into a few more and onto a small resident managed apartment block worth £120 every 2 months ... all from knocking 1 small £12 bungalow on a very wet day ... :)
YES ITS WORTH IT !! even if it leads to 1 small bungalow @ £12 monthly x 4.5 years = £648 ... better than staying home wasting time on here moaning about the weather.
some people let life happen to them others make it happen ... which are you ?

If im not working I will be sticking a few leaflets out updating on the net
quoting or best of all putting my feet up and enjoying life. :)
If you are happy canvassing then canvass if not then don't...seems
simple to me

All the negative posts on this thread!!.
He simply asked if its worth knocking in the day to compact his round up.
Anyone saying no shouldnt be a window cleaner end of. Its what this game is about growing a decent compact amount of customers with minimal driving and maximum return! Those scared to knock or who are tunnel visioned simply put people off canvassing giving them a complex about too much rejection and rude responses at the door.
Anyway gaining customers is good however for compacting you cant beat a good old fashioned knock.

Michael, Michael, Michael I enjoy most of your posts, but shouldn't be a window
cleaner because they don't door knock ::)roll ;D
Nearly as bad as the shouldn't be a window cleaner if you dont do insides.
I personally dont like door to door salesmen, so I refuse to become one of them
But I wouldn't tell anyone not canvass,a person should use every option
they are happy with.
My round is extremely compact most of my work is no further than 5 min
drive from my home, never canvassed once :)

No, you shouldnt be a window cleaner if your not prepared to put in the work to make it worthwhile i meant otherwise you will be all over the place earning minimal compared to a round where you have built it using a few brain cells, anyone with savvy can leaflet/canvass a round. Paul has leafleted everywhere local which he has built his round on verey well but his next step is to compact it so can do more than 1 or 2 jobs from 1 spot which was his question on this thread wheather its good to knock day times!, thats where i cant work out why some are window cleaners by saying not to knock and to leaflet because he has already leafleted! His next step is to compact everything which doesnt take a rocket scietist to work out that knocking is the best way as has already used the leaflets to get him where he is today, its as if some window cleaners want to spend more of the day driving not earning than actualy cleaning glass earning a crust hence me saying dont know why some people are window cleaners. Wasnt aimed at you or others who are lucky enough to have a round thats been going years when was easy to get a round up and running, to me it just makes sence that if you want compact then you have to put the work in to do it which means knocking. Thats my view on it anyway and has worked for me and im 5 mins up the road from paul.

I started in 2007 started the same time as the financial crash
I take your point about canvassing Michael but its not the only way of being
proactive,i target specific areas to leaflet and keep a constant stream of advertising
for example Cards in local shops, every shop in a 10 min drive has my business
cards in its window and most forget to take them down so ends up free advertising ;D
im on every free advertising link on the web for my local area.
Its not actually that hard to target the areas you want without canvassing.
Anyways Sir Michael wasn't really having a go,but its the ridiculas statements
some make, this is the only way blah blah blah that tend to agitate :)
-
I have a good round from leaflets so far but as mick said i want to compact my work a little by door knocking my existing customers neighbours.
But from what i have been told this week about another local window cleaning company increasing the price by quite a bit and telling customers they will be put on two weekly canvassing is going to be easier ;D ;D
Paul
-
Leafleting/advertising costs, knocking a door is free. In my experience there's about a 5% return from leafleting and iv leafleted 100+ houses before and got two calls, iv NEVER canvassed daytime evenings or weekends and picked up less than £100 of work be it an hour or a day
-
If you have to canvass then you must not be doing your job properly or you look unprofessional. I never canvass or beg for customers! I simply start my van and the phone rings, people run to me and beg me to take them on as a customer, they get rid of their old window cleaners and employ me, even though I'm more expensive! They e_mail me and tweet me to please take them on, they offer me their sacrificial daughters as play things if only I'll clean their windows!
I'm not just any window cleaner, I'm a JD Window Cleaning Services Window Cleaner...... ;)

I find its the other way round
Bad estates are just grateful when they find out your not the old bill or a bailliff
Its where the houses are nicer i find they can be rude

I'm not just any window cleaner, I'm a JD Window Cleaning Services Window Cleaner...... ;)
How arrogant of you! ;)
