Title: Tank Frame with Pics
Post by: Alex Wingrove on April 09, 2013, 06:42:09 pm
So I got the frame back from the fabricators last week, and today I got it back from the Powder Coating People

I was vying with the idea of getting it powder coated, but I know someone whose powder coated frame has chipped and begun to rust. They are the cleanest and neatest window cleaner I know, so if his chipped, im stuffed. Im not messy, but I when Im at work, Im in a rush to get as much done as possible so things have to be hard wearing.

Anyways, so then I though about galvanizing and then powder coating, but this was going to be costly.

So the guys down at Aurora Powder Coating, suggested PlasCoat.

Basically its a plastic coating that is sprayed on and then baked. Its more impact friendly that powder coating, and because its a plastic bond less likely to flake.

So here is the finished result.

And here is the frame I have designed for two hose reels.

The tank dimensions are 1200mm wide by 1400mm long and 650mm, so it gave me after the baffles 1000-1020l.

The frame was £366.00
The reel cage was £97.00. Higher than I was expecting to be honest, and a little too well engineered, could have done with 5mm sheet rather than 10mm sheet.

The PlasCoat was £130.00.

Its a Redashe reel. My old one was Redashe, and that's still going strong after 3 years, so hopefully these will too.

I am not in an ideal situation.

I am being harassed into a tight schedule, and the company that replied to my enquires for the tank got the business. The other 8 I emailed didn't bother.

I dont think £366.00 is alot to pay for what I have, maybe you cant see in the pictures, but there are two 50mm box sections on the base to secure in to the floor.

As I said about the reel cage, that is over price, but again, I need it for next week.

The PlasCoat. If you can find me someone who will do all of that for £130.00 I will be amazed.

Alex

I think it's good for about £600.

My mate has 1000ltr tank in his van, well, hie ex-van, you see, he had a slight knock. He took an island too quick thinking he was in his Octavia VRS and clipped a kerb. His van tipped over onto its side and he hit a barrier and stopped suddenly. He had a full tank of water and has the same cage as me. The police examined the van after the event and measured that the tank had slid towards the cab just less than 1 & 1/4". They told him if he had ratchet straps, an inferior cage or bolts holding it in place it would have broke through the bulkhead and made him part of the carburettor! He would have died without a doubt. He was glad he spent decent money on a hard wearing cage.

You have done the right thing Alex.

Alex

I know what you are saying alex .

But from personal experience ( 16 years ) fabricating welding i know how much
I would charge for a job like that i know how much it would have cost etc .

And the powder coating etc theres no more than say £40 at a push .
Put it this way i paid £50 to have 10 meters of wrought iron fencing painted
Including posts .

If i could still do my trade i would and i would have done it for a hell of a lot cheaper .

But if anyone else wants frames made give me a shout and i can get some sorted for a good price especially if your local .

Looks brilliant, I think its a fantastic price for what it is, peanuts really if you think about it. Its something that because of that coating will last most likely last for decades to come, perhaps the rest of your window cleaning career. Better to have something over engineered then the opposite.

Well done for doing it yourself. Looks very professional.

How will it be secured to the vehicle?  Not wanting to sound picky, but the best cage in the world is useless unless it's securely attached to the vehicle chassis.

The tank came from Neil, at http://www.plasticwatertanks.co.uk/

The tank cost be £835.00

The reel was £149.00.

The frame wont be installed into the chassis, as this will comprise the van, so It will be secured in six points to the floor pan.

I have 6 m16 bolts that will go though a 20*152mm plate and that sits on top of the 50mm box section, with another 50mm box section sitting inside similar to a t shape.

The bolt will go through the floor, and then another 10mm plate will act as a spreader plate.

The design is similar to the grippa, but also different in a few ways.

In all  honesty I wanted a Grippa frame and tank, because they are so well made and enginered however the 850l wasnt ready in time, and now I have it, im glad I went for a 1000l tank..

Thanks Timber, it needs to last

Look forward to seeing the finished result.

Saw your van the other day around the corner from Sainsbury's, its absolutely huge with the roof rack on! Looks good though! I would have to drop quite a few residential jobs if I had that van, wouldn't be able to park it in their drives! But it's a must for your work as you could see from my van, I can only have the window cleaning stuff in there along with the Grippamax 650.

Let me know when its finished, it will be nice to see it in person.
