Hi guys,
Today a clamp came loose on my SLX 25. I've replaced them all once before on this pole which is near the end of its life. I was going to order a new one next week along with some other stuff (after my year end on the 6th April) but they are out of stock till first week of May.
I've been off here for a while and haven't been following the feedback on the Phoenix poles - anyone users out there to give honest feedback pls?
As the clamp broke I had to switch to my spare SLX 25 which has the old style single-trim unflocked Superlite brush. Wow - what a difference! I now realise that I much prefer the original over the dual trim jobby I have now. Alex - if you are reading this any chance you can bring back the old brush?

i have a slx25 (15 months old) and i will probably give a chance to facelift phoenix soon. I like my slx25 but the pole wear too quickly! i don't think i will buy again a gardiner pole except if the new slxII is much better.

I wish Alex would bring back the single trim flocked brush. Is this the one you mean?

Used S-Max 40 first gardiners pole i have had and lightness and rigidity is great i like the fact that the outer diametre of the pole sections is quite small in comparision to my Elite carbon and a lot lighter .
Took 3 sections off and been using it as a 25ft pole really good quality pole good clamps easily adjustable also fitted the new Quick loc resi neck nice and solid like it a lot .
If i could have waited for SLX II i would have hopefully it will possible to fit the new revolutionry clamps to older poles . Mike

Lighter and shorter. Looks like a nice pole, may be worth a punt for £250 plus the extras!

I just used a tin of engine laquer on a 20 foot slx and a 25 foot extreme. Put 3 or 4 coats on and it is fantastic. Protects it and you can add another layer to anywhere that is wearing unevenly. If I have to do this every month it will be worth it. Many thanks to whom ever first suggested it (Spruce?).

Personally i cannot see it been lighter if they are using the same clamps as used on Elite poles which are now branded as the Evolution poles then defo not the clamps are much bigger than those on an SLX .
Which will add extra weight and after using an Elite for almost 2 yrs i Know the difference the pole sections are heavier .
Some one buy an Evolution and compare to an SLX i just dont see how it can be lighter X-line bought out the waterfed pole company supplier of Elite poles . Mike

Been using the pheonix 22 carbon for 3 weeks now. All I can say is it is superb. I can extend and retract much quicker. Not adjusting the clamps. Very rigid. Excellent pole.

Ben - My SLX 25 has got to be 18 months old. It's used daily and is the pole I use for 95% of the jobs I do. It's been an excellent tool. Some may complain about the clamps, but since they altered how they glued them on and changed the barrell nuts (ahhhh) they've been fine.
The top 2" of each of the top two sections wears disproportionately fast, but this is the nature of the way I use the pole mixed with the fact its carbon fibre - CF seems fairly soft. It's no bother to fix new clamps on after sawing off a couple of inches from each section.
I'm interested in the engine lacquer - more details please.

probably just different clamps. the clamps seem to be the only bad thing about them.

Halfords supply it - I use GUNK Engine Laquer. I have just put a couple of thin coats on and then let it dry hard before assembling the pole. I would be scared to make the coats too thick. I think that the engine laquer suggestion started with Alex Gardiner.
If you get a run, then leave it until it gets dry and sand it off with some fine water paper.
Laquering the pole will reduce the carbon black hands, but won't stop it all together. It will reduce the dust that comes from the outside where the clamps rub on the tube where the majority of the wear comes from, but you won't stop the dust coming from wear from inside the tube.
The last SLX that I got just over a year ago is definitely better than the earlier units we've got.
What confuses me about the carbon dust is why my CLX doesn't give me black hands. I know the outside of each section is fibre glass, but the inside is carbon fibre. So as each section slides against the other, the outer fibreglass section must rub on the inside carbon section.
Alex has tempting us with a new model SLX. See his website. He has had a pole sale that has reduced his 'old' stocks. He is a master of creating and maintaining expectation.

Looks like we'll just have to wait and see. I might try the engine lacquer idea. Mind you I always wear gloves - even in summer as i'm not keen on the feeling I get with the black hands ( abit itchy), and I heard bad things about carbon splinters (i.e. the dust) getting into the blood stream (don't ask me where I heard that - I can't remember. It's probably not true anyway).
