Has anyone taken on an apprentice?
I just lost one of my employees (women trouble so moving away) :o :(
I don't need a driver so age is not really an issue so was wondering about giving a youngster a go.
Its an attractive option financially as the government offer incentives although I would pay above what they suggest. £2.65 per hour is almost slave labour.
-
I didn't know you could do a apprenticeship in window cleaning or another cleaning :-/ Its not like chippying or brick laying.

not this again no such thing.

Please start another post up discussing your views and let the people who've done this sort of thing help out. I'll delete or remove any further disruptive posts that doesn't discuss the OP's original question; but serious, start another post discussing the demerits of calling this scheme an 'apprenticeship' and that way it'll stop this topic turning into a female dog fight.

there is actually, i was contacted by a place that deals with these and everything sounds great, was very tempted to go for it, but just didnt have the work there for 2 guys all the time,
could of taken him on get him on the glass for 2 days then 2 days leaflet or door knocking i guess!
here is one link that you could read a little more into it

Thanks Richard, some useful links. I am seriously considering this as I can see lots of benefits for both me and someone looking to get into employment.
If the right youngster works out he will have a future working with me or take the skills to set up on their own.

yes thats true, and you can teach them how you want it done as they will be fresh into it, and not someone that has done it before with someone else,
there are a lot of things they can do, even door knocking and gaining work can be done as part of there framework too!

I know That's the main reson why I haven't looked into it I would have to pay more then thAt , I just got of the phone to them they make it sound really interesting , they go 1 day a week to collage and 4 days to you but you have to pay them for that day in collage too and a minimum of 30 hours a week, one of the problems is as most will be young they may not have a driving licence
-
at that age even if they did have a driving licence the cost of the insurance would be sky high.
However if you just looking for someone to tag a long with you all week to make things a little easier and make a little bit more profit it may be worth while. you could always give them a little but more as cash in hand.

Ok if thats what you think mate. just to say it dont matter whether you got the qualification or not a good window cleaner with out qualifications will always a better one that has some stupid bit of paper saying i am a muppet and went to colledge for some thing a customer would laugh in you face over. All a customer wants is a window cleaner that does a good regular job for a good price. It make me laugh you go around saying the industry is changing and people should evolve with it and get qualified but you still bodge poope equipment together that arn't even designed for the job. Mate your a joke get a life

lol jealousy wont get you anywhere!
i have gain more work from large commercials since i have all the paperwork h&s etc behind me than a lot of the cleaners around my area!
plus was 1 in 5 for a £50,000 2 year contract, didnt get it as national got it, but to be 1 of 5 guys in the country to get asked to quote for it, i think thats good going as im only just starting my second year! oh by the way i scored a lot higher than that national did on a few sections!
regarding all my equipment everrything i use is designed for the job it does, because i have a set up that will outlast alot of named stuff for a fraction of the set up cost! with-in 2 months of starting my set up was all paid back, and well into profit, some guys pay £5000 plus and it takes ages for them to get there money back!
-
jelous my arse mate. And well done on the contacts but i bet still some one without those would get the jobs if they worked the same areas. A bit of paper does not make you any better as a company than any other
-
yawn yawn yawn,like a pair of girls blouses ;D ;D ;D
-
You can look up my blouse any time franky lol

maybe not but it shows that you are upto date with all h&s and that in case anything happens to you you are covered, because if it goes to court they need all the proof that you are trained etc.
you dont need to be ladder trained, but if you have a fall and claim, thats the one thing that they look at first, if you arent then they dont pay out!

I agree with you on that, but i dont thing a qualification is needed but thats my opinion and you entiltled to yours. But i still stand by what i said people that run the impact courses make me laugh all they are doing is getting rich by goverment grants and sit the telling every one that every thing is against health and safety but the proberley go out and break the rules. Dont forget to close the whole road just incase your pole breaks and the brush falls and hits a wall then bounces up in to a window and kills some one wont you

Ive done an apprenticeship course, not in window cleaning but the idea is that the company gets you to work for cheap and you go to college maybe 1 day a week to learn something relevant to window cleaning or whatever your doing, you could probs send them to college for some kind of trade like plastering or something and say its a property maintenance apprenticeship. This is how I see companies do it all the time, when I was 16 earning £100 a week on £2.60 per hour that was loads for me.
