Good, bad, ugly?

nice !
better than mine

Or this one?
It looks a bit grubby for 35,000 miles.

if your gonna get one of these you need to get the hdi if it is a peugeot or the jtd if it is a scudo im not sure what the turbo version of the dispatch is. i have 2 of the turbos and 1 of the non turbos and the non turbo is gutless! dont buy one the turbo tjhough are great and drive just like a car. The first one says it is a hdi but it cant be as it is 1.9 and the turbos are 2.0. IMO et a turbo one of these that has been services and you cant go wrong.
-
they both seem a bit pricey to me, I waited ages and eventually got a 2003 1.9 d peugeot expert for 3.5k including vat with 39k on the clock, all the other garages were wanting 3.9k+ vat for same van with 70+k on the clock,
Keep shopping around mate, by the way they are good vans.
and I disagree with matt3 yes they are a bit slow but I am never in a hurry to be anywhere so they suit me just fine
-
Seems about 1 k to much to me ;D ;D
-
i have a non turbo and sits lovely at 70 + and is nippy round town!
-
Tosh have you looked at the Fiat Scudo? near enough the same van but not as expensive.
Matt
-
What are they like with 650 ltr in the back think I might get one
-
rubbish i have both and can compare them , if you want a van that pulls great and drive like a car regardless f tank ull or empty then get a turbo, if you are happy pootling about and having to crawl up hills with a full tank get a non turbo.
-
What are they like with 650 ltr in the back think I might get one
probably to close to the payload, most I have in mine 400l plus a hundred in containers sometimes and I wouldn't want much more to be honest.

Cheers guys, you've been really helpful.
I'll have a look at a Fiat Scudo.
What sort of mileage should I be looking at, realistically, with a budget of £5K (though I can go to £6K at a push, but would rather not)?
70,000 miles max? Or doesn't mileage matter that much? I see some fairly new vans with really quite high mileage, so I guess most of these would be motorway miles, so is mileage a big factor?

Tosh, diesel engines don't really bed in until about 80-100K
If they have a full service history and the previous owner has looked after it you could get 300-400K out of them.
I know taxi drivers who have 250-300K on their clocks.

I am in the market for one of these, the first one looks better than this one. Even though the miles are better, whoever had it really didn't look after it. If they don't look after the outside there is a good chance the they did nothing with the innards either.
I like the first one, if I was up that way I would be round having a butchers in the morning. I have my eye on a new shape for about 6k just up the road.

That's nice, but Bridlington is a bit out of my way.
I'm in South East Wales, so anywhere around South Wales and the South West is my kinda area.
But thanks. It shows what's out there.
The thing is, I've got to stick to about £5K because anything less means Wor Lass will make me spend the money saved on DIYing the bathroom; so it's in my own interest to keep it around the £5K mark. Selfish and self-centred, yes, but I hate DIY.
-
how much payload does that expert, citren van have? any reason why you are going for that van and not considering a connect?
-
good van there big for a small van, if that makes any sense. i bet the payload would be decent for a tank?!
i was gonna get one before i got my vauxhall combo
-
most of the older ones have a 815kg payload

My Renault Trafic blew up at 70,000 and had fsh. While high mileage on an engine may not be a concern, don't forget the gearbox, brakes, suspension, drive shafts etc have done the high mileage too so you will always have your hand in your pocket. Imo,go for a low mileage van.

It's £4K. Do you think I'd be able to get a further reduction in price? I've cash waiting.
And do you change the timing belt straight away?
(Just consider me to have the knowledge of a woman when it comes to vans ;D).
And where's the best place to get a roof rack from? ;D
-
Tosh , keep on the line your on mate , these vans are spot on . i dont have one , my brother does though , it has been to the moon and back and still can wipe the floor with my T4 , the beauty of them is that if engine or box go bang , you will not find it easier to source a replacement part , PUG CITROEN OR FIAT , dont matter cos the engines and boxes can be found in many of the said makers cars too !
My brother ,PERFECT PANES . is your man if you want any info at any point .

if they have been used to drive up and down motorways you wont have the wear and tear on gearbox etc, however if they have been used for a small local firm doing local deliveries in city centres and towns then I would agree with you.

I like the look of that as well, but instead of going for money off push them to stick a years mot on it, it runs out next month. and remember it will need taxed, roof rack, poss timing belt, so that should eat into the bathroom diy fund ;D
-
love my scudo van had it over 3 years now, 2.0 turbo, paid £8k when it was a year old. got a 650 tank in it. i try not to fill it right up as i think i would be overloaded. plus im trying to save on fuel by just having it 3/4 full. unless im doing a £300+ day then i fill her right up.
so yeah get a scudo, dispatch or expert think theyre all the same?

Everyone selling a high mileage van/car always says its been used for motorway use. Its an old car sales yarn. Wear and tear will still apply to trackrods, suspension, drive shafts, half shafts etc. You'd be a brave man to buy a 300,000 mile van. Unless it was a tenner
-
ive got that exact scudo (same colour too)
+ points fantastic workhorse, got mine with 17000 on the clock, 48000 now, never a problem, (only thing wrong was the EGR valve which i had disconnected)
- points, no guts when loaded, i have a 450 tank in mine, locks dont last!!!
-
Hey, thanks guys; you've all been brilliant. I'd get you all a drink if I could.
Thanks, it's really appreciated. It's a great site this. I've been given a 400 litre baffled tank; free and delivered from someone I never even met till he dropped it off (thanks RZ), another guy has offered me a light weight pole (thanks Matt), and Squeaky has offered me some work he doesn't want.
And I've had tons of brilliant advice.
I don't care what your customer's think of you, I think you're a great bunch. ;D
Cheers.
Regards,
Tosh

100% they,ll mot it, if you cant get any cash off the price tell them to stick a roof rack on it and you might have a deal.
i always try and bid them on the phone rather than when i get there, ring them and bid the £3700 and see where you finish up.

Brother has the scudo with about 215k on the clock , i think its running a PUG 405 engine at the moment , i got him the van cheap cheap £700 i think it was ,blown head , it was less money to put a new lump in than repair .

We bought two peugot experts almost a year ago from Haydock auctions, 53 plates. One was £950 plus VAT plus commision etc..and the other was £1100 plus.... One had no MOT and the other a short one. Good vans though, nice and comfy. Pulls 500 litre tank about fine. Plus ladders, plus L5 heater and bottle, plus about five poles, trad stuff amd alsorts !!!

I'd have to check tomorrow Rich, but roughly around the 100k mark.

The thing about Fiats though (I've got a Fiat estate) is the ruddy warning bleeps wind me up. My air bag is knackered BEEP. My boot isn't shut properly BEEEEEP. There's something wrong with my heater plugs BEEEEEEEEEP. Low fuel warning BEEEEEEEEP. Someone hasn't got their seat belt on BEEEEEEEEEEP.
They really wind me up sometimes. >:(
Added later:
Actually it's not really a BEEP, it's more of a DING!

Tosh the Pugs and the citreons have the HDI engine, Fiat put their own engine in, as far as iam aware.

Trippy,
I think the Pergeot, Citroen and Fiat vans are all made in the same factory:

Does anyone know the score here?

In that model range, including the facelift, the 1.9d (non Turbo) that Scudo use is a Peugeot engine, and the same one that is used in the Expert and Dispatch.
The Scudo 2.0l JTD in the year range was a rebadged Hdi Peugeot engine used in the Expert and Dispatch.
At that time Peugeot and Citroen (PSA) were having the van built by Fiat and using their own drive trains. So the only difference between all 3 of them is cosmetic.
The general rule of thumb was that all 815kg payload vans were 1.9d and the 900kg payload were Turbo diesels. Even in the early days before the Hdi engine, the 1.9TD was also rated as a 900kg payload.
It was only after this (with the new models after 2006) that Fiat started to introduce their own Multijet diesels into the model range. The vans are still built by Fiat so the Peugeot & Citroen models use the same engine. Fiat are using their Multijet engines now.
The red Citroen Dispatch in one of the links that Tosh likes is the Enterprise model, 1.9 straight non turbo diesel but being the Enterprise model comes with ABS brakes as standard. No all vans in that model range had ABS.

It's £4K. Do you think I'd be able to get a further reduction in price? I've cash waiting.
And do you change the timing belt straight away?
(Just consider me to have the knowledge of a woman when it comes to vans ;D).
And where's the best place to get a roof rack from? ;D
I don't have good mechanical knowledge but it's generally a good idea to get the belt changed on a vehicle that's reached the mileage (or close to) where it needs doing. This is unless you have specific proof that it's recently been done. Something else to be aware of is that sometimes the belts get changed without changing tensioners. I got very lucky with this one.
I once bought a 2nd hand Escort. When it was due for service, I decided to have the second cambelt change done as well - just in case. The belt was fine but they changed it anyway. The guy changed the tensioners too. One was on its last knockings. Very lucky. He showed me my one and a new one side by side. Mine had a crack in it.
I think most makers supply a cambelt kit these days to make it easier to change all the bits over in one go.

Hi Paul
This is good advice. Do the lot.
To add to this, the water pump is also driven by the cambelt on the Hdi engines (nor sure about the 1.9d but I think it is as well) so my advice would be to get that changed as well, although most garages don't bother.

-
After much hand-wringing, I've decided to go with this one, I've viewed it, test drove it, checked it over
and stuck a deposit down on it:
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=390300892897&ru=http%3A%2F%2Fshop.ebay.co.uk%3A80%2F%3F_from%3DR40%26_trksid%3Dm570%26_nkw%3D390300892897%26_fvi%3D1&_rdc=1#ht_1187wt_1139
It's getting serviced, it's cam belt has been changed, and there's a years MOT on it. It also comes with a
roof rack and the garage are removing the wooden floor for me. For £3K with no added VAT (though I
know it's in the price), and there's 76K on the clock.
I could've got the smarter, more lower mileage at £4K, but this way I should still have a couple of £K left
over; and I may spend some of that on getting some more business.
Anyway, I should be picking it up on Saturday; fingers crossed; and then I've just got to get the stuff put
together, which I've started ordering.
Exciting eh? :P
Thanks for the advice guys.

Tosh... havent read all of this but wanted to say my piece.
I have the peugeout expert 1.9 TD - great van and still going 187k on the clock
-
Cheers, Blue Frog, but it's a 2005 CITROEN DISPATCH 815 D Enterprise; but I've been told they're pretty
much the same as the peugeout expert. There was a peugoet expert there actually, but it had just over
200K on the clock.
I've heard these vehicles described as 'work horses', so I hope that's true.
I got to inspect the van prior to it being valeted, and I couldn't see any visible oil leaks from anywhere
under the bonnet or under the van; it all looked quite tidy and that was - as I say - prior to the van
being 'polished up'.
It also comes with 6 months worth of warranty where they'll pay upto £500 for anything that goes pear-
shaped (but I know many warranties are rubbish).
I can't wait to get my hands on it and get it set up.

Massive post so not read it through (I'd be here all day).
We bought a 55 plate Dispatch last January for £3400 + VAT. Just the basic Model but low mileage and one owner.
The HDI will def have more grunt and from memory can has a 900 Kg payload as opposed to the 815 Kg of ours.
I would be looking to pay around £3400 for the standard and £4000 for the HDI (both + VAT) if I were buying a 55 plate about now.
Good van, even with the basic model.
-
I just bought a fiat scudo 2.0 JTD dynamic, 900 payload, 06 plate, taxed & mot'd, full service history, 1 owner, very clean, has air con, electric windows & remote central locking, cd player, now the milage is motorway mileage @ 180,000, runs & sounds like new, serviced every 20,000 from new, bargain price of £2,200 ;D
