You'll be glad when you stop climbing ladders.  I did it for 18 years, my knees got so bad at times I had to really use my arms to drag me up to the next rung.
I've been to the doctors many times, he sent me to a Podiatrist, who I now visit every 2 years, he fits me with foot instep supports, the theory is that they help "realign" my knees.
The best thing is go wfp - no more ladders.
Now after 5 years wfp, (mind you I am 56) I have permanent back ache, neck ache, carpal tunnel problems, chest pains too! :o  I won't be doing it for 15 years, I know that much, but it's bought me time. 8)

If I'd read this post when I started last year I wouldn't have bothered starting  :o I know any job that continualy puts presure or wear onto the joints is going to cause a problem eventualy, but I suppose we all hope were going to be the lucky one that doesn't get affected.

It's got to be tough when bits of your body are wearing out.  I've had a dodgy shoulder for over a year, but it seems to be improving, but there was a point where  thought I'd better start looking for another occupation; which isn't easy after being self-employed for a number of years.

Anyway, here's what I do:

1.   Try and stay hydrated, apparently being de-hydrated causes more wear and tear on your joints.

2.   Gloucosamine tablet daily.

3.   Cod liver oil tablet daily.

4.   Take Ibruprofen three or four times a day when the pain was bad.

I've also heard about something called MSM, which I've not tried, but some runners use it (it's the new gloucosamine I was told), but I'll look into it.

cheers tosh.i do take glucosamine/cod liver oil every day and have done for years.i also drink lots of water when im working.ive took ibuprofen with paracetomol(supposed to work better)when ive had a stiff back.

i just have to admit that i think its the extra weight im carrying!18 stone when i should be more like 15/16 for my height and build(6ft2in).that extra weight coupled with climbing ladders day in/day out and moving furniture and playing football with my brothers kids has taken its toll again!i forget im nearly 40 sometimes!! ::) ::)

cheers guys and thanks for all the tips!the best thing i can do for my future health is I NEED TO LOSE SOME WEIGHT!!!!!!!! ::) ::) ;D ;D

You've hit the nail on the head Dazmond. Do it now (before diabetes smacks you round the head) and do it by cycling or swimming(weight off your knees). Frankly - even at 6ft 2 you should really be 14 stones max.

When I was Chubby Mcfatso - 16 stones off of 6ft and up and down ladders I ached like an achy thing at age 39. I got down to 13 stones and that made a huge difference (42lbs off of your knees is a lot of weight eh?) and then wfp made it even better.

I'm now 51 and never felt fitter. But I need to lose a stone to get back to 13 again.

It'll prolly all go south now I've said that! ;D

Tablespoon of cider vinegar and honey in hot water 3x a day will reduce knee inflamation. It also acts as an apettite supressor.Trade name is "Honeygar"  If you dont like vinegar on your chips you may pucker up a bit  ;D

Daz
While your taking so long to set up wfp why dont you invest in a new knee ;D

Just a thought.... or you could give it a rub with a magic sponge like the footy players do

Dazmond it might be worth getting it checked out by a ostoepath,I twisted my knee it swelled up could hardly move on it, my ostopath did it in one treatment cost £35 well worth it,that was  2 years ago.
The danger is you think it's ok then you go back to square one, also what is the cost of more days off work get it sorted now. Wishing you a speedy recovery Hotsteam  :)

Higher  nature is a good supplier for glucosamine and MSM. Seperate products but good to take both.

MSM is an organic form of sulphur which is involved in the formation of collagen and most other things in your body.

Excellent suggestion to drink lots of water throughout the day.
