Vivaro or Transit?
« on: October 11, 2011, 06:04:47 pm »
Looking at new vans at the mo and Ive whittled it down to these 2... Heard a few horror stories about Vivaros (especially early ones) and  the Transit have legendary reliabilty but the rust seems to get them quicker than other vans!

Looking at spending around 4 to 5 grand. Whats your thoughts guys?

Cheers

Heard alot of bad story's about the transit lately,

then again you hear a fair bit about vivaros... What sealed the deal for me is the fact all the AA vans nowadays are vicars so they can't be that bad...

Pretty sure they've sorted out most the old problems with the vivaros

Picked my 07 vivaro up last month.. Lovely to drive, and under 5k so nicely in your price range  ;)

Ive got 2 mates that own a workshop and they best sum it up as you only ever see a Transit when it needs a service but the vivaro's are always in getting summit done.

like u say early ones prone to water in gearboxes and transits rust quicker but vivaros drive nicer.

mines a transit 260 swb

had a transit on a 52 plate, was reliable but they rot!

got two vivaros one on a 05 plate one on a 08.

when i first bought the 05 plate nearly 4 years ago the head went on it so i wondered what i'd let myself in for. but touch wood both have been ultra reliable since then. the 08 plate is as good as gold

Transit.

I've done 110 000 miles from new. All it's had done is the cam belt, a pulley that tensions the fan belt, the exhaust plus of course the usual, brakes, etc.

the new transits dont have a good review, but as with all vans you buy you take your chance.

bother in law worked as a manger for fords for 20years now runs his own garage doing fords, and his advice to me was dont touch the new trannys, get a older one if you can.and he knows his stuff

The newer tdci engines suffer from injector and diesel pump problems, the older tddi engines are reliable,

Sounds a good price for an 07 spikey, what mileage has it done?

That the third time I've heard that said this year. Mines an 05 plate. I've been looking into leasing a replacement instead of buying as leasing is about £250 a month for a 3 year contract with the manufacturers 3 years warranty but downtime is loss of earnings.

Maybe it's an idea to check out Vivaro's as that was the only other van that seems ok.

85,000 with full service history  :) test drove a few before a bought this one!

Good friend of mine use to be head mechanic and vauxhall so knows these vans inside out.. he said the 2.0 cdti version which are pre 06(I think?) are the ones to go for, ether engines cause they've got cam chains not belts...!

Wouldn't touch the transit at mo , some big issues with
Clutches lasting 20k miles when worked hard also gearboxes
Doing the same, although I have heard they now have updated
Boxes also 07 plate engines had a habit of starving itself
Of oil ! Not good. Great when they work but think leasing it
Would be the way to go at moment.
They dropped the tdci and box into Landrover defenders
And the have been a nightmare on occasion .

The Maxus is nearly impossible to get spares for. I was considering one until recently. There also seems to be alot of them on ebay with blown engines.

that was the case as the company got wound up and suppliers were waiting for the receiver

but i understand that parts are available now.  engine is made by vm as regarded in the trade as bulletproof
so hopefully that will be the case for me
