if they are new, you would need to boil them for a while. They have a coating on them which stops them from rotting in the warehouse, and you need to remove it. soaking in bleach also works but changes the colour.  8)
if it is dirty it is fair game

Put them in a really hot wash in the washing machine a few times and use them for sill cloths a few times to roughen them up.

What do you mean detailing?
when you wipe the edges of the glass, and mop up any fastest window cleaner marks on the glass.

I would boil wash you scrims a few times as said, then use as sill cloths if you can, if not 5/6 boil washes will break them in a little, break them in meaning they will start to work correctly and suck up water, pre washed scrims are a joke they still need washing, you could always try some microfibre clothes from unger or contico you can use them straight out the packet, I 99% of the time use the micro cloths now. but used scrims for years and no soap no softner no tumble dryer. 40d wash or 50 on micro scrim high as possible
If your not willing to learn, No one can help you, If you are determined to learn, No one can stop you ;)
