Should the Federation of Window Cleaners, promote the use of WFP, as a 1st method of use in window cleaning?.

On their 1st web page they state

"Increase public awareness of the need for high standards of safety"

and we all know that WFP is the safest method of window cleaning that is used at the moment.

Your thoughts please

it isnt the safest method as a a pole with applicator/squeege has no trailing hoses is more safer, and there are safer methods

but a applicator/squeege does not clean clean as good as a wfp and the other safer options are sometimes more expensive to operate on every household

So you clean all the frames and sills with your appilcator then, as well as the gutters and garage doors.

Because I do with my wfp

Your post was about window cleaners not guttering or garage doors, if you are saying gutter cleaning and garage doors is what every window cleaner does well you are wrong!

Not yet but maybe I should join and upset the old brigade from within

I believe that anyone who say they represent any trade, should always promote the safest method that is available, and if that safer method is a new concept, it should not be ignored, but promoted as the safest method.

There is to much living in the "good old days" that the safety of many of its members is sometimes forgotten

Who cares?  Does anyone listen to what they say?  I don't think so.

As far as I'm concerned they can advocate whatever they like, it makes absolutely no difference to me (nor anybody else for that matter) whatsoever.

Seriously, what difference would it make?

i would say use any method you want!trad or wfp!im trad but use ladderstoppers/mitts and extension poles every day.im as safe as i can make it for a sole trader traditional window cleaner.

i know a lot of trad windys who do not use extension poles/ladderstoppers/mitts etc and take (i would say)stupid risks with ladders.i wouldnt do it myself im older and wiser at 38 now!if they cant be arsed to spend the money on safety gear and use it,more fool them!if they fall off and hurt themselves then tough!its their own fault!

i will be investing in wfp in the future but there will always be occasions where ladders are needed.also trailing hoses could be a trip hazard wfp.

most custys are happy with the standard i clean with ladders or trad pole.whether or not wfp is a more thorough clean im not sure as ive no experience with wfp at all!im hoping so really as i would like to get off the ladders if possible in the future as i dont think my knees could stand another 16 years on them day in/day out!!

i do hope wfp IS better than trad in the future.just not now while im 100% trad!! ;) ;D ;D

I've actually had ppl telling me they won't be renewing their Guild membership this year because my attitude seems "anti trad"!
I do think trad is a valuable tool and a necessary skill,.. but where WFP is safer (Most situations in my opinion) I do believe it should be promoted.

The Guild now has a licence to distribute publications from the UK health & safety authority website, and has recently started including some of the relevant documents in every membership pack we send out.
We are working on idea's to promote health and safety more within our industry,.. but because the Guild is run on a voluntary basis and on a shoestring budget we can't move nearly as fast as we'd like.

why are you so bothered about health and safety?or do you sell wfp systems and want to cash in on making them compulsory! ;D

does anyone really care about their fellow window cleaners?i do always point out to trad cleaners that the lack of the bottom rung of their old battered ladders/lack of extension poles over wet decking etc,etc etc is not good practice but most dont take a blind bit of notice!

i really do  think there are a lot of pretty dumb guys out there doing this job.and when they fall off and hurt themselves then its just tough!

i think some of these guys would be just as bad let loose with a wfp!! :P ::) ;) :)

kind regards

HYDRO or William or whoever you want to be called

Did you read the posts by Willis, he is a fed committee member, who is doing fantastic things within the Fed.

Some things need time to establish and filter through.

When i was with the APWC there was a draft Hse document which stated that ladders could still be used where quality was an issue.

Not only have I read what Willis has said to the fed but I have also been on the courses that his company run.

You say some things need time to filter though, yet the WHAD is coming up to its 5th birthday.

I am not asking that ladders are banned, instead I would like wfp to be encouraged as a 1st choose, when you are looking to be coming a window cleaner.

When a newbie is thinking of starting up and one posted a topic on this site a few days ago, they don't seem to come ocross the wfp option as the safest route into the trade, instaed they are pointed down the ladder route., and the majority of accidents happen to newbies.

Hydro

wfp has only really become acceptable to most wc in the last 2 years, at first 90% of window cleaners were sceptical, only NOW is it becoming the norm.

The FWC have some good guidelines coming soon so i hear.
