As Matt says - it a numbers game. You're a salesman selling a product - your service to clean their windows.

A good salesman will keep a record of how many doors he knocked at, how many people he spoke to, how many wanted quotes and how many brought his service or product.
Over time you can then start to work out a ratio between these facts that are personal to you. For example, if you knocked at 50 doors, got 10 people in, 3 wanted quotes and 1 accepted your quote, then you know on average you need to knock 50 doors to get 1 sale.

This can help to motivate you to carry on as it can be easy to give up after knocking on 40 doors with no response. You know that according to your % figures from your statistics you should get another sale with the next 10 doors. I knew a couple of salesmen you didn't get demotivated even when their quote was rejected because they already knew that they would need to have 2 rejections before they sold their product - so they looked forward to the no's as they made way for a yes.

It can also help you to work smarter ie., if you called when more people were at home, then your chances of a sale are better as you will speak to more people.
