Interesting title, however it will be the pros and not the part timers who will get hit the hardest. The part timers will have their benefits to fall back on or their 'proper' job to carry on with. They will be back down the firestation this afternoon whilst us professional windys will be struggling.

I agree with this in essence, once it thaws they'll be back out there, the difference between them and us is that we worry about the weather and how it affects our round/custards/income, they dont.

Get out to work.
Buy some salt and clear some driveways. This is what running a business is like.
You have to think outside the box, its unbeleavble that many on this forum claim to be sitting at home watching TV or playing Xbox etc. when their is work to be done. Even if its spending the week phoning round getting more work.

We have the easiest climate to work in - the rest of northern europe has colder and deeper snow every year.

god your full of crap,i have a full round dont need to get more work, why go out and get injured for the sake of a few quid, soon as weather is right will be out full speed ahead, the pros put money aside in summer to cope with winter the part timers spend it all

I agree with a lot of what Matt has said. Far better to stay at home and wait till the weather improves.

Yes there are those that will say 'That's all well and good but I've got bills to pay'

Then perhaps a lesson has been learnt (albeit harshly) Try and have some funds available for next winter in case it happens again!

This is my first winter and you're right this weather has been a good lesson for me.I won't be so unprepared next year (probably...).It's all well and good saying get out to work but in practise if it isn't possible it doesn't make you a loser or defeatist.I went out and found that the windows were freezing (regardless of whether it was trad or wfp) as soon as I was cleaning them. They looked ten times worse than when I started them and I can't see customers settling for that.I'm waiting on a heater to arrive to try heating the water to see if that helps but until then I'm not working.I think the OP is trying to suggest we're lacking some kind of Dunkirk spirit but it's common sense imo.Coming on here and insulting people isn't really helping the situation from what I can see.

but when those days turn into weeks its a different story. I'm losing money hand over fist at the minute. Its not a case of factoring the cost, how could you know what the cost would be? Its good to have back up funds but if you can't work and you turn over a little bit it soon mounts up to a high figure. All the other overheads don't stop because the weather is real bad.

The weather will get better and things will go back to normal. just grit your teeth and bare it. Its all you can do really.

;D ;D  ;D   Can you get that “grit in handy pocket size bags”?

(Triple Zero I’m not gritting or bearing anything  ;D)

if the weather never gets better again you two could always take up a career as comedians ;D

i never realized what i posted, i guess my teeth would never get icy then eh? ;)

If your insurance doesn't cover your new ventures then no amount of grit will stop you sliding into prison if someone decides to trip or slip on the grit you have put down.

I am on the telephone talking to local 5* Hotels and have jobs lined up  to clear and salt their carparks and driveways for between £100.00 and £250.00 a time  ;D

Its going ok at the moment Dan, I still have 15,000 leaflets to shift, I wanted them done before the end of January as well.
Maybe get half that amount out if I'm lucky.
How is business your end?

the only work I am going to try to get done this week are a few shops trad as I hav'nt done them since before xmas and if need be that will be on foot.
For me its not just the icey conditions but the driving and parking all over town. The going would be very slow with traffic chaos and I've invested too much in my van and equipment to risk damage to it or waste the deisel for little return.
This weather is a very rare occurance (we hope) and if it lasts a couple of weeks then so be it, my custies will still be there and so will the money, its just not in my pocket yet.
So sit back and have a well earned rest in the warm or enjoy the winter wonderland with ya kids

You will not catch me working out in this.

1.  My health and safety is the most important.  If I earned £100 quid but had a ladder slip and could not work for six months I would be right royally buggered.
2.  Customers will not want their windows cleaned.  Can you blame them?
3.  The roads are dangerous and if my car skidded and hit a young child could I live with myself?  NO

As this is my first winter full time I have learned to put more money aside.
