Permanent Marker on UPVC Door
« on: September 29, 2009, 06:51:06 pm »
Been asked by a potential customer to look at their front door someone has written over it with black marker pen,

i have used t-cut on it but not coming off...

would the old trick of using a dry wipe pen over the permanent then wiping work ( ie as per white board )  or is there
something else i could try ??

Cheers

DON'T RUB IT WITH A WHITEBOARD PEN!!!!

My experience shows it simply doesn't work and will only make things worse as the whiteboard pen won't come off either.

If Tcut won't shift it, it must have soaked in below the surface. If that's the case, you can't shift it. You could only abrade it away.

If it's painted, painting over it doesn't work well either. The paint can dissolve some of the ink and pull it into the newly painted surface.

My advice, as it's a potential customer, don't get involved.

you need graffiti removal wipes cheap enough and easy to remove. I have done this before many times.

The door is unpainted -  nice bright white ( except for 2 words in large and very black letters )

Thanks for the options - just worried anything spirit based may ruin plastic

I used a product called Doctor Power sold by JML in supermarkets. It has its own sponge which you wet and rub. Then I clean with bash cleaner for card to shine again.IF ITS PAINT GIVE ONE COAT ACRILIC PAINT THEN FINISH WITH GLOSS PAINT.

Doors aren't UPVC its not rigid enough. Even if the windows are UPVC the door will be powder coated aluminium. Tap it with a coin or a screwdriver handle.

UPVC doors usually have metal inserts in the frame for rigidity. If not then they are cheap and nasty.
The pen is mightier than the sword..and easier to write with!

A lot of doors ive seen are actually glass fibre composites. They look like upvc but are stronger and longer lasting.

A local pub landlord swears by Brasso. I don't know if he uses it on UVPC though.
Have you tried WD40? It can be great on some staines. I got black grease off my tow ball onto some white trousers and couldn't get it off. I WD40'd it before washing and they came up like new.
This landlord sprays WD40 on shiny surfaces in the loo. It irritates the noses of coke heads.
