how long to clean a gutter?
« on: September 25, 2009, 06:48:04 pm »
Just getting some ideas for something here, for someone emptying gutters on say a 3 bed semi, so gutters front and back,......how long would it take doing it off ladders?....average?

Saying theres no trees etc growing out of them.

15 min front and 15 back

thats using a pole to drag / push everything to 1 side, it extends your reach a fair bit

if i am climbing the ladder and pushing / dragging it from the ladder i use my RT zensorflex pole and this

http://www.wintecs.co.uk/catalog/product_info.php?products_id=347

if i do it from the ground, drag it along to the 1 point and 1 ladder climb, i used a unger ali pole and a angle adaptor and the same tool

it works well for me, though i dont particularly like doing them as i have more than enough window cleaning work and it just means i fall further behind

Hi Mick

I use the same scoop as Matt on a Harris Pole (B&Q). Normally only need to place the ladder in the centre of property and away you go. Charge around £25 per side. But more if it looks a bit awkward. Would also recommend a Stand Off if you are getting brave ;D

Whats the cunning plan then Baldric ;D

I will not work for those prices we are busnesses I am not employed i would like a hourly amount and a profit amount therefore  at least £3.5 a metre for Krud and I do not rush myself.  Done one last week 2 X 5 metre at35 pounds a side and 2 £ to clean guttter out side and facia board per metre that can to 90£ and 10£ fer windows Paid no probs.Thsi is not a rich area.So There is only two types of Business the type we want and the type do not needs.

think differently when doing gutter work. it's not a regular service like cleaning windows. and also you are often working at a much higher level. often times ladder will be on plastic guttering which can slip. gutter cleaning/clearing is a premium service and should be priced as such, get a builder out to do it and he'd want £50 just for going up a ladder.
what do you do when you get up to the gutter and find that its full to the top and compacted down and smelly, and your hands are bleeding because the of the overhang of the slates? of course it's upto you what you earn, but for £7.50.......
i'd rather just do the glass.

Ste M,
The prices you mention are not okay because this is one off, not repeat work. The prices of £20 a side will bring you roughly into line with regular wc work once you have quoted etc.

This is not pleasant work, and you have to climb a ladder to do it.I'd like two like you and then i'd sit at home all day.

ye i see your point EZ, before cleaning my customers gutters i usually put my hand in to check it out so i have an idea of how bad they are. If they are jam packed then i would charge more but most of my customers get them done regulary so they are usually only slightly dirty. I do know that if i qouted 20-30 then the ywould say no, i only really do the gutters when i have a few spare days with nothing on, better to earn something than nothing ;D
