Van conversions from diesel to cooking oil ?
« on: June 22, 2009, 09:33:43 pm »
Hi guys,

Wondered if anyone has done this or knows about it ?

Am going to be getting a 1998 Fiat Scudo 1.9

I used to know a guy who converted a vw to use cooking oil. Just wondered if anyone has done it ?

Or can point me in the right direction ?

Thanks

JP

That's right it works, but not for very long. I've had 2 mates that used it on a MK 2 and MK3 Golf and within a few month's, both had knackered fuel injection pumps. It's abrasive, even if you add white spirit. That's the bit, they forget to tell you on the internet. That's why there is a conversion kit for bio diesel.
And yes, it's smells like a chip shop.

You'll find it all on Google. Personally, I wouldn't do it, because the conversion kit is cheaper than a new FIP.

that'll be same engine as the citroen/peugeot diesel. 1.9
perfect for veg oil, but CHECK if it has the bosch fuel pump, if so 5ltrs of diesel
then chuck aload of veg oil in,
i think they other one they fitted was Lucas fuel pump, i dont think these are as good.
if you get 'dipped' and not declaring it, they'll have ya big time.
rapeseed is the best, i could be seen down Lidl carpark with a box, at the time it was 49p a bottle.
personally i dont think its worth the hastle unless your into 'green'

I looked into this a couple of years ago..

1.One problem is when the engine is cold, because the veg oil is thicker than diesel it can damage your fuel pump.

2.Keep a log of how much you use  ;) then if you get stopped you can show it and then you would have to do the paperwork and pay duty of about 24pence a litre on the amount you are declaring.....

3.I have seen some people say never use more than 50% veg oil to 50% diesel unless you have done a conversion.

4. Conversion kits heat up the oil, and you throw a switch when you are almost finished driving and it switches to diesel for your cold start the next day.
5. I did about 20 litres and it worked but my van did smell like a chip shop  :D

I think the website was dieselveg.com

Hope that's useful.

i run my scudo on this it has the bosch pump fitted so can run it with no mods at all
i just change the fuel filter 3-4000 miles as it will get bunged up
i normally put 20 litres of filtered veg oil in and then add 10 litres of diesel
you will get the chip shop smell and you will hear the engine get a bit of "diesel knock" but it hasn't damaged mine

you will need bosh injectors and pump, yes you can run it straight from the bottle, but the best way to run it is to preheat it to make it more viscous. It will in time rot the pump but if you do mega miles then its a small price to pay, could always stock up on bosh pumps every time one pops up on ebay. also keep chucking some injector cleaner in that will keep them clear as they can get blocked if you use veg oil without the pre heater.
The early merc engines and 200 & 300 tdi land rover engines run veg oil very well. But best advise is to preheat it so look at the diselveg web site for a convertion kit . It is also a must to change oils and fuel filter every 3k miles not 6k os advised in the service manuals

ALOT in the VW T4 scene run it 50 / 50 ( sometimes even 70 / 30 , mainly in the summer )

thats just a straight pour into tank, VW T4's have Bosch pumps though

if you are really worried about pre heating it go to mothercare and buy a 12v baby bottle warmer and wrap it around the fuel filter ;)

***WARNING!!***

Do be carefull where you get it from.  Last year I had major problems with water in the fuel.

I was more than happy to pay the £200 rather than the £1200 for a new diesel pump(03 tranny).
