walk away
« on: May 15, 2009, 06:54:56 pm »
hello,

just wondering if you's have had many jobs where you've just had to walk away for what ever reason.

had a job on today which i was told was a ground floor flat which turned out to be a second floor which isn't the best with a extracta excel but that was just the beginning. it was a total dump hadn't been hoovered ever had everything in my way (total mess) and once more had been flooded.

i didn't go and see the place as it was a bit far away so went a bit blind folded. i just said am not doing it. i didn't give him a higher price as he wouldn't be able to afford it.

yep! it happens now & again, went to look at a job for a firm that owns apartments for indivduals that have behavioural difficulties... got there & could'nt believe how filthy the carpets were... i mean everything conceivable was in the carpets ie; poo, fluids etc!!! i was'nt happy at all about doing that sort of job... so i priced it so that they would'nt except the audit... guess what! they excepted it!! finally i had to decline, the owner was very abusive about it... my logic was how could i put my machine through this, i'd be disinfecting my gear all week :o   regards charlie

a couple of years a go I did a quote at a pub ( the living quarters up stairs) the landlady asked if we were OK moving the furniture, I said we can move most things.

i booked in the job, when we turned up we realised they were moving out, when they asked 'if we OK moving the furniture'  they meant downstairs into a container in the carpark :o :o :o

I just walked away.

Early days Derek...................believe me, you will learn to walk when faced with some of the stuff you get asked to do.

We used to do domestic cleaning for social services and because most who take it on back out fairly quickly the fims who stay the course are charging over £1k per clean.

Requires a team of strong stomached individuals, but most are completed in 5-6 hours with a team of three, but you WOULD need to thoroughly clean machines

How many suites have you been asked to clean and they are ripped on cushions and in open view? walked out of not just bad carpet jobs but also bad customers, I'm a mild mannered man and put up with most but when they start haggling an alrerady agreed price or start adding bits on then I will advise them I will do it for the price agreed or not at all.

I know exactly what you mean when you find something out the ordinary in someone's everyday living accommodation for example, whilst at work (Fire & Rescue service) we where called to a smell of burning in a domestic property. The house was filthy,I went to investigate so walked along a small passageway towards the kitchen, opened the kitchen door and there stood a full size horse drinking dirty water from the kitchen sink  :o Up until then I thought i'd seen just about everything.I'm glad we didn't have to clean the carpet.....

Sounds like a job I got tomorrow. Flat, 2nd floor, carpet is black apparently, left that way by previous tenant.
Too far to visit and quote so gave a higher than average estimate over the phone.

Never walked away to date but had a few stinkers just after starting out that I was really tempted to including a flat above a restaurant where 6 of the workers lived, hallway and stair carpets were crusted in years of black grease, health authority told the owner get them replaced or cleaned, was a bit daunting after only been going a few months.
But glad now I didn't walk, good experience and it showed me early on how a really trashed carpet can still come up well.

Did a job today that I should have walked away from, 22 steep old stone steps to climb just to reach the front door, with a powrflite pfx1350 in the rain.

Now I've got shooting pains in my right wrist and its making a strange creeking when I move it, like an old rusty door !!  ??? Great !!

I've always kept a lightweight portable for occasions like this mainly for EOT's but I got totally peed off by the constant assurances from LA's that " the cleaner had been in "

Last one I did I got there as the " cleaner "was about to leave...................

A male middle 40's dressed like he was about to go out for the night even got the standard poseur gold chain around his neck.

Are you the landlord?                                                                                                                                No I clean for the L A.                                                                                                                               Oh, are your girls running late ?
It's just me, only takes about 30 minutes a flat !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Exlains a lot, says I noticing he had a little plastic tray with a wet cloth, a duster, a spray of some kind.
So it's been vacuumed ?
Didn't need it, place is immaculate! He did'nt even have a vacuum cleaner with him

Took back the keys and informed L A I would not be doing any more of their work if they did'nt employ a proper cleaner.

Oh he's a friend of one of the managers..........

i should of walked away form this job last week. Basically went round and quoted this job and it was just a lounge carpet but was not told that over the phone . and the lady was a complete weirdo mid 60s big staring eyes just basically gave me the creeps. Plus by the looks of all the empty spirit bottles a bit of an alchy.
juas
well did the job left the porty in the back of the van so the pipe would stop fron door shutting and fin the job in 40 min . the job was the stan min charge 65 quid.  but the cheque returned. sent letter and went round and collected cash yesterday in all fairness she coughed up but she just gave me the creeps.
