i lost a pub to a customer, turns out he does it on a friday, earns the money and then has a cooked breakie off them and stays till late afternoon

i guess its allmost a free clean

If he is going to do it trad staight of no practice and hasn't used a squeegee before I think you will get called back by the end of the week, if its a pain to you he doesn't have a chance. But you will pick up more work, so when and if they do(they will) call, tell them the price has gone up 10% or dont do it at all.

This happened to me after doing a social club for 12 years, the commitee decided that this bloke who drinks in there 24/7 was going to start doing them, I said in a cynical way, thanks very much.

He did 2 cleans in 6 months, when its supposed to be cleaned every month, so they apologised and asked me back with a £5 extra incentive, so i swallowed my pride and went back for £25 as opposed to £20.........................................so watch this space mate, you might get it back ,if you want it back that is!!

Licensing would be the answer it would also make some think again when it comes to starting up,it would then be against the law for certain establishments to use people like this.

Lost a job today, its a working mens club, and the steward said "one of the guys who drinks in here has been made redundant and he is going to do it"

So I can only guess he is not insured (yet? maybe he will get some) and that he is not a window cleaner

Its a very awkward job, I used to hate doing it trad, its quite high (28-30 ft) ladder had to be footed for most of the windows, spiked railing below. (green) stone pavements etc

I asked if they had any issues with the price or our work and they said "no"

Is it time for licensing in England?

If this guy is going to do it trad, and has no experience, Its going to be a very dangerous job for him.

On the other hand, if he is setting up a legit operation, then I don't suppose I can complain.

But getting the job cos he drinks there and knows the committee men is kinda hard to swallow.

Public liability insurance coverage is not a legal requirement to carry out the job,why do you presume that if you have a couple of million cover for approx £100 that makes you a pro over others who dont.
I have minimal cover just because of one particular job,it's not a legal requirement but i wanted the job so i got the bare minimum coverage that i could get away with....what a waste of money,am i more professional because i have it...well i still do the job properly,i still pick up customers,i still have to much work...oh yes and i still earn a living...thats what makes a professional window cleaner,not the ability to say you have pl cover that isnt required to trade unerd the law.

Do you have 3rd party only insurance for your car?

No i have full comp as the chances of me having a car/van crash are probably a lot higher (especially as the wife is on the insurance as well) than me dropping my pole directly onto someones car or head and getting sued for it.
I do understand the concept of pl coverage,i used to work in lloyds of london many years ago,and i do understand the value to the underwriters of putting multiple clauses in a policy to restrict the amount and value of claims.
What i am trying to get across is that having a pl policy makes you no more a pro at cleaning than someone who doesn't,it just means in the unlikly statistical event that you do drop your pole then you MAY be covered....but the chances are the insurance company will wriggle out of it.
If you use ladders then that is your own fault for choosing a dangerous way to clean windows....

Now if licensing etc was linked to the Taxmans database I'm sure as eggs are eggs it would all be taken a little more seriously but as for local councils enforcing a licence system...sorry but that is laughable at best.

Another thing is that without the need for individual to carry some form of i.d...what is the point of it all anyhow?

I would remind the "Job's Worth Committee Members" of the Club's legal obligations. Re: Health & Safety that applies when employing contractors to work on their premises and also give them a copy of the WAHR 2005 for good measure.

all i would do is reminde them of wahr 05 and corperate manslaughter laws
if this happens to me i point outthese types of leagalaties
but i fail to see how a licence would make things better we have all the laws going
and dont enforce any look at the news today you can now assault some one in the street
and get away scot free
