Tipping culture
« on: March 22, 2005, 07:04:25 pm »
having just recently done 3 seperate cleans at the same address, no not call backs :D 1st two sofas cleaned £10 tip , asked if i would clean longe carpet another day , booked carpet in , finished job £5 tip , thankyou madam.
would i come clean the rest of downstairs 2 bedrooms, hall , dining room ,
booked it in  , cleaned today £10 tip thankyou madam.
why im making this point is, are we catching up with the usa when it comes to tipping,? as i have noticed around 30% of customers tipping for c.c.
Have any of you more seasoned cleaners noticed an increase in tipping over the years?  Geoff

When I was lower priced a few years ago, I used to get more tips than I do now.
I increased my prices 50% overnight three years ago, since then, I do get some tips but not many. I think if you are getting a lot of tips, maybe your prices are too low and your clients think (Even if they dont say) that you are not charging enough, especially if its as high as 30%.

Dave £90 to £110 for a straight forward 3 pc , cleaned and dried around 3 hrs,
 £2.00 sq yd straight forward carpet , £45 to £55 h/s/l
Am i to cheap? I personaly dont think im on the cheap side, and I never lower my price to guarantee winning the work , what i try to achieve is making the customer feel they are getting good value for their money
    maybe this helps

On a slightly different note for those of you who do alot of restaurants........next time check a menu and see if they charge a service charge........when you finish cleaning their carpets add on a service charge.........see how they like it.
Surely your entitled to if they can.

Almost every domestic job gets me tipped :D
Either my prices are too cheap, I look poor or I'm just a likeable guy ;D

Without sounding too obvious, I think it is down to the custards.
When I work in a working class area, you stand a better chance of a tip then in the posher estates, this I think is due to the posher people handling less cash and more plastic.
The same used to happen on insurance work, the posher clients would say thank you, but the poorer clients would give you a bottle of whisky or some money. The poorer would apppreciate the lounge, or house being redecorated, new carpets etc
And when I put my prices up for cc, I too got less tips
