rug problem
« on: March 20, 2005, 12:04:29 pm »
I have taken 2 rugs off-site to clean for a customer. I have done 1 of them, which is a 100% wool with paterns, and is mainly beige/off-white. the strange thing is, that 3/4 of the rug has turned out fine, but the other bit looks darker...sorta browner...any ideas would be appreciated.

Hi Scott

Shame you didn't post this Saturday as I was Burnham FC  and could have had a look for you.

It may well be just a characteristic of the rug and nothing that you have done, clean it again and have a another look.

Depending on the type of rug it could also be a bit of pile reversal or shading. If it is you will not be able to anything about it.

The first thing that springs to mind is Abrash (sp?)  This is where the wool is from 2 different batches, but dyed with the same dye. When new, the rug looks fine. As it ages, soils and fades, the different wool batches react differently. Hence the different shades. Sometimes it can even be in stripes.

The surprising thing is that, if this happens on a fitted carpet, it's regarded as a fault. On a rug it's all part of the character :D

Of course, without further information or an inspection, this is only an educated guess.

Safe and happy cleaning :)
