It's to stop the poles from jamming together; the SL2 suffers with the same problem so I believe from posts I've read on this site.Do you understand where to tape them?
Push the joints together- but not too tight, then wrap 4/5 turns of tape to make a ridge/stop that the pole cannot compress further together.
I've also taped the bottom of the female end, just to protect it.

yes me, each section has a different colour, thus its easy to put together quick
