I use a thermal fan heater and was wondering if anyone has used these before, if so are they any good?.

Never needed to heat my van overnight as I'm lucky enough to have an insulated storage room, but just recently had a few real early starts and its a real pain to load up early in the morning.

Whats the best heater to use? As I always worry about leaving something on overnight in the van unattended.

I have a fan blower heater (Small thing), convector type one and an oil filled rad. in the attic, any of these do the job?

Both heaters will do the job.

You could do with one with a thermostat so it kicks in at  a low temp - sve the energy bill.

I find a fan heater better as it circulates the van, just some warm air moving about gets everywhere, whereas "static" heaters can be a bit local with there heat.

my delonghi oil rad keeps the van at a steady 5 to 8 degrees, heater in the back and a food thermo in the side door to check its heating all over, jobs a gooden.

just got an oil free radiator, nice and light and heats up a treat, plug it into an extention with a breaker on the end and plug it into the garage
mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm its so toasty in the morning

have no idea on what it costs to run?

ifind it much better getting out the find and swiching my heater on and going into the house bugger this carrying stuff around and with it running on red dev its pennys on run bring on the ice

just pull up at the garge and put it in the tank

 dont forget my t.m. runs on it so i had my night heater plumbed in to the t.m. fuel tank (red)

i still get strange looks when filling the t.m. at the red pump with the filler on the side of the van

you can get red desiel at a number of garages.

I run both t/m and burner on red  , its not a problem.

I was under the impression it was only farmers allowed to use red ? I got refused fuel by the cashier at my local garage,until she came out and looked at my tank in the boot,she let me fill up after 20 questions  she thought i was filling cans and was going to drive off !

Not, that is, until your stopped at spot check.
Not sure but think it is illegal to run normal vehicles on red.
However I will be looking to see where I can buy some and sod 'em.

Yeah that`s what i thought,only have to use it once and the red dye shows up when they test it !

John, you are getting confused, no one is running their van on red, just the truckmount inside the van Geoffs Burner is part of his truckmount.

use red once and it will discolour your injectors then even if you never use it again you can still get caught.

its not worth it

should be able to use red in your tm, as you can in generators, off road vehicles and boats etc

red deisel is perfectly legal to use in any machinery you wish, providing it is not a deisel engined road vehicle,   hence  DERV    .

the only differnce of course , as Mike  quite correctly pointed out is the dye.

Numerous ways of trying to get round the task have been tried by people, including hidden tanks , mixing with additives , straining through different filters including sand but today none will work, in the days when it was just the tank was dipped you had a chance. Today a simple sensor to the exaughst they can tell instantly, wether you have it in , had it in or just happen to have a little in from months ago.

The consequences, well certainly they can impound you van.

having said that  I did once put red in a small van years ago after running out on the motorway, just happened to be a kind farmer a hundred yards away     I was lucky.

Lot of MYTHS about how long after using red they can tell. Fuel filter stained yes Injectors no Exhaust if fitted with cat yes for a long while. Without cat not long.

As already said by others.....You CANNOT run cars, vans or lorries on RED DIESEL.  If you are tested by Customs you will have your vehicle taken from you plus fined.  You can however run what is classed as PLANT MACHINEARY on RED DIESEL.  Diesel powered Truckmounts can b run on RED DIESEL without any worries.  Some years ago i pulled up at a garage, filled the van up with WHITE (normal) diesel then pulled the van upto the RED DIESEL pump and began to fill the Truckmount,  a police car that was going past th garage made a abrupt stop,  reversed and sped upto me.  The officer DEMANDED that i STOP the filling which i did.  Afetr 1000 questions all was ok.  I explained to the officer that i had just filled the van with white diesel & was now filling a seperate tank with RED DIESEL.  I showed him the Truckmount,  then showed him the tank that had been fitted under the van for the Truckmount also pointed out to him where the fuel line was running from this 2nd tank, then up through the floor of the van to the Truckmount.  The garage owner even came out to try & explain to the officer that he had been serving me to RED DIESEL for months now & that he himself had checked that it was not the van that was running on RED DIESEL when i first started to get the diesel from him. 
Alot of garages that i know that sell RED DIESEL & sell it to you even in small quantities such as a petrol can will take your vehicle registration number & ask for identification then ask what you will be using the RED DIESEL in before they will allow you to obtain it from them.  All this info is recorded into a book.
