How often do I need to change the resin in my water softener,every week I connect the salt cannister and let it run for 10 mins or so to regenerate the resin within,another thing is I heard that 4040 membranes don't need to be flushed,a bit confused!

 : It's a bit hard to say really... you don't say how much water your using each week!

I haven't re-charged my resin once yet (in fact I have only just bought a 10" filter housing for the job!) I been using my merlin on and off for about 11 months
(I harvest rain-water as main water supply... no waste water!)

As for the 40/40 ro I have heard both sides before!
I would go to the horses mouth (the site of the maker!)

If water is chlorinated you should change your softening resin every 3 to 4 years.

You should regenerate it using salt crystals at every fill really. Once a week if you are filling a decent size tank every night is no where near enough.

Yes you should flush a 40 inch system out regularly. A couple of times a week in a hard water area.

Things are still pretty much the same. I've had loads of tests but am still waiting for news of any plans for me from the hospital.

Yes flushing the RO is simply a matter of fully opening your waste valve. I would do it for 10 to 15 mins.

Just to add a note to this it's also very good practice to fully open the valve and let the RO flush  for 1/2 an hour to an hour when you change your prefilters to get rid of very tiny particles called fines from the carbon filter/filters when they are first replaced.

Hope your better soon,I got the system from your previous company Pure Freedom about five months ago,using 500 litres a day,the other Andrew said every three fills would be enough so I do it twice weekly using salt crystals,my tds is 346 on tap and  showing signs for changing from DI,could I use the salt cannister to regenerate the resin in the other DI vessel,the one before it enters the tank as well as the water softener one.

You cant regenerate the di resin with salt (it will kill it) I flush my 4040 before every fill for 10 mins, my tds is 470+

Great,thanks guys,I did'nt realise till Andrew told me it's two different types of resin,will only need to change one resin vessel now
