PC Printer
« on: October 15, 2008, 01:52:19 pm »
I am looking to buy a printer and cannot decide which one to use. which do you guys use. I am not going to be using it for flyers. I will only use it to send out letters and print of the odd email.

Sometimes there is the trade off between buying a cheaper printer-you refill ink often, buy a more costly one and you would think that the refills last a little longer.

what do you guys use and what would you recommend?

Im using the hewlett packard c5280 as got it for birthday, it scans, photo copys, prints etc but i have always been a epson man as you can get the ink cheap off ebay about £10 a set,  always check prices of ink before buying printer as sometimes the ink can be more then the printer.

I use a HP Deskjet F2180 (bought from tescos for about £30) which scans, prints and photocopies.

Yes the Ink is a deciding matter, BUT i inject my ink using the ink and syringe refill packs you can get (about £5 from tesco, which will last you longer than buying cartridges, since you refill only the colour you need).

If you are using a lot of ink, you can always buy the ink in larger bottles off the net (up to a litre i think).

Dont buy ink cartridges, make sure you can re fill the ink yourself, otherwise your will be paying an arm and a leg just for ink!

Check to make sure the printer you get, you can inject ink to refill them.

OKI B4100
A laser printer, I consider is better as, when raining outside, the ink does not run making writing on my working sheet illegible.

I have a HP all in one but I also have an Epson, if you buy the Epson then look on flebay for a continuous ink feeder, if you then wanted to you can print hundreds of flyers and to refill your ink cost around £10

You don't say if you require more than black only.  Also, do you need a duplex facility to make double sided printing easier?  Both things to think of when making a decision.  As prices have come down in recent years, I use laser rather than inkjet.  If the ink from an inkjet gets wet, it can run (something to think of if you are sending stuff through the post).  Also, laser toner lasts a lot longer but costs more.  The downside of toner is that it's not usually so great for quality image printing.
Not answered your question but given a few pointers.  BTW.  My m,ain printer is a Brother HL 5150D.  It's black only laser with duplex.

Hi, thanks for your reply.

I am after black only and doesn not need to be duplex facility.

These HP ones seem popular, a good brand too perhaps?

HP Colour Lazer Jet 2600n

cost about £150 and the ink catriages are £40 each roughly. I prefer paying a little extra because the cartiges last ages and feel you get your money back, compaired to using inkjets which need refilled contantly.

The other advantage as some have mentioned is the finnish and it doesnt run as much as ink jets, but they can also print on glossy flyer paper which inkjets cant, and thats really why I use them. I produce a large amount of brochure and find this is the best route to go down when it comes to your printer.

you need a cheap printer then

the lexmark is a very cheap printer ( dell buy them and rebadge them as it happens ), you will pick 1 up for 25 quid

they are loss leaders, they sell them off cheap as they make the money from the ink cart's they sell, though most with lexmark will refill the carts with ink themselves ( i have done this in the past )

i own a top end cannon photo printer and 2 lexmarks

Look on the Brother website, they do refurbished laser printers for under £50. I bought a HL2030, it was as good as new, and came with a new toner.
