Is it me, or are people still leaving windows open when they go out, despite potential burgles?

I have one particular customer who never seems to be in when i go round to clean, but i always find the windows open! At hand are mobiles, and other sorts of gagets.

Personally, i think they are stupid to leave them open, but if they were likely to get burgled i guess it would be me thats gets looked at first.

See your local CPO and ask him for some crime prevention leaflet's and let him know what you want them for, then stick them through the custy's letter box with your ticket.

Funny you should say that, i had a call from them yesterday trying to sell me a advertising space in the "new" leaflet that is going to be published and delivered to all residents of Swansea.

Don't bother taking it up Chris, I did it a couple of years ago and had zilch from it, they say you'll get all the police houses etc, what a load of old goolies.

But by chucking a crime prevention leaflet through the door with your ticket, it shows the custy and the police that you see potential problems with Burglaries and if anything does happen then the w/c shouldn't be the first susspect on the list.

a custie had resently been burgled,as i was cleaning windows she came down path,she was still in a bad way ,telling me they got through front door allsorts taken,not a big house bit of a small roof to top window,jump up easy,guess what window wide open,people wont learn,i pointed this out to her,i carnt sleep with window shut

I wasn't thinking of advertising (ive decided against all paid advertising such as yell and community mags etc, and go with flyers,canvass and recommendations), however its a good idea that the leaflet will get distributed to all.

I think i will get some of my own, ready to post through as you say.

I am concerned about this when i go to canvass new customers which is why i have applied for my advance CRB check.

There are may things that I've though about that would go above and beyond most window cleaners and advising customers about the security like that is one of them, as well and supporting the cut the cord schemes and many more.

However I just dont feel its really my place, and prefer to stick to advising them about getting clean widows rather than crossing the lines of responsability. Although I know what you are saying about blame, but they would of course have to get prove of something like that. So I would worry too much. if you are honest you will have no problems.

I've got an old lady on my route, and always has the side door open, when I call on the door, she just says come through the side door please, she doesn't even know it's me, it could be someone with bad intent. I understand why she does it, because she can barely walk. I should have told her, but I fear she is really stubborn, I'm thinking of giving the local comunnity support officer a call, so he can visit her and point out the danger.

Also, there are so so many people with windows open, it's not funny. Even if you put it on the vent setting, so there is a centimeter gap in between, getting a crowbar in between must be one of the easiest things, even if it's locked.

Also, I always have my patio door locked when I'm in, what's really popular nowadays is, for burglars to just walk round the back, and check the door, even if people are in another room, they quickly steal stuff, or worse. If you've got music on, you will never even hear them come in, or come behind you.

No one of my customers mind but the police said my van was seen in the road and i was seen going in peoples gardens.
I said i know i'm a window cleaner and was cleaning windows there.
He said i know we have checked and that was it.

They are just asking for trouble.

These days even a dog is no deterrant they just knick the dog.

When I was in the security trade I was involved in installing a cctv and an intruder alarm system linked to central; station, the customer in question had two Dobermans that were trained guard dogs and only fed on demand by there owner.

Earlier this year one of my customers was burgled about an hour after we had cleaned their windows (my customers were in when we cleaned, and then went out shortly after we finished and departed).

The burglar got in through an open window on their conservatory.

When the police turned up and my customers mentioned their window cleaner had been just prior to the burglary, the police basically said, 'Good!'

I was a bit taken-aback by this when my burgled customers told me; but the police were happy because if they left fingerprints, it'd be easier to get them.

Unfortunately there were no fingerprints, but we definately weren't under any sort of suspicion.

They actually brought along 2 bitches on heat with them, sent them in so they kept the dogs busy and we all know the dogs get stuck together, the intuders Calmly  helped them selfs to £25,000 and walked away leaving the bitches behind.

I had an elderly couple who were burgled twice and didn't know they had been burgled until the Police returned their marked property recovered in a raid elsewhere. They'd left their front door ajar in order to charge an electric wheelchair in the front porch.
