Has anyone cleaned limestone before and if so what with. I am not talking about flooring....these serve as splask backs in bathrooms!! Talk about impractical!!

 They do not appear dirty as such but will need sanitising and are very porous!

Urgent attention would be appreciated as we are carrying out this job tommorrow!

I dont know much about this other than limestone being porouse should have had a sealent applied to it i.e. G4 or similer, if it hasnt you could make a few xtra £ by doing the sealing as well.

Any idea where from or how much. Is it just painted on? I did something like this with some tumbled marble tiles!

Hi Maggie,

I have done various courses at Prochem, who supply cleaning chemicals to the cleaning and carpet cleaning companies.
If you were to go onto their web site:  www.prochem.co.uk   and click onto "contacts", then click onto "Training and Technical", you can email your query giving as much info as you can about the limestone not forgetting it is on the wall and not on the floor, and next to the sinks etc etc, they will come back to you with the product needed and also the best way of doing the job, protection, seals etc. Better mention that you need a speedy response if you are doing it today!!

Most of the products they recommend can be applied by low pressure sprayer, brush, cloths etc

Failing that, your local cleaning supplier should be able to guide you in the correct procedure for doing the above. I have always found my cleaning supplier to be a wealth of experience, help and guidence.

G4 is made buy Bondglass-Voss ltd in Beckenham Kent (081 778 0071) very good product can be paint or rolled on.

You can also get G4 from DIY stockists, its not cheap, something like £60 for 5ltrs and it will need 3 coats.
Could be very profitable all the same

I only know of the company due to that I used it on my pond, bad prep it will peel off very quickly.

I paid £7.99 for 500m from an aquatic centre.

not used it yet myself, i am waiting for a couple of sunny days so i can reseal my pond (big crack). I will have to make sure i do it properly as it peels off then

Tim I did try the searches as suggested previously but to no avail unfortunately However I will take your latest advice & contact Prochem for future cleans!

Without providing too much detail  I have ploughed ahead and got the job done to the best of my ability and hopefully the clients satisfaction!!

If you are talking about cleaning limestone then all you need is a stone friendly ph neutral cleanser and a cloth. A limestone backsplash should only need a regular wipe as dirt is not going to get ground into it.

With regards to it being a porous stone and needs sealing - why??? Sure it is probably porous, but an impregnating sealer's only job is to stop liquids from being absorbed into the stone and I fail to see how any possible staining can occur on a backsplash! People who sell the sealing chemicals would have you seal everything that is stone even if it is not necessary!
