Sorry Joe,

I would go the total opposite.

Have the largest possible business card and use it as a mini salesletter.

Don't expect a potential client to have a clue about machinery. They are only interested in what it will do FOR THEM (ie RESULTS).

Don't miss an opportunity to sell yourself.

Just go with your first idea then adapt it later from feedback  ;)

what are you going to use your business card for?

most people use business cards because they don't have what is actually needed,

you should carry (or have in the van) a variety of small marketing items

so when someone says......

"give me a business card, I'll stick it up on the notice board at work"

or

"give me a business card, My sister wants her suite cleaning"

or

"give me a business card so I can call you in a year to have them cleaned again"

is a business card the best thing to give them? people ask for a business card because they don't know to ask for anything else.

the only time to give a business card is when they say "whats your address? I'll send you a cheque"

So for A business card I'll agree with Joe Hatton, but for everything else you need what Gary22 is suggesting

Just to add my agreement with whats been said.

When I approach the clients door to do a pre arranged job I have a business card in hand.

However, I always have a wad of my A5 double sided leaflets in the van. If anyone makes an enquiry whilst at a job, they get the leaflet and a business card.

my advice. same as joe, keep it simple.
but thickness and quality of the card is what makes people keep it, how many flimsy business cards have you got in your wallet?. (you know the ones, freebies from vista print) waste of time.
as for everybody saying have this, have that have the other, i agree.
but seeing as your only asking about busy cards, i'll stick with the programme.

Have the same thing as magnets for leaving in offices/homes etc  ::)

I do keep business cards and my Rolodex will not hold flyers or postcards  ???

What Chris and Mike O say is what I was trying to explain earlier.

If you are going to give out a card, you might as well give something different that aids your selling process.

How many times have you come home from say, an exhibition, with a fistful of business cards? Can you remember who is who and who was selling what? An "extended" card can explain so much more.

if someone is good at what they do, you remember who they are and then you know who's business card it is, a business card is a contact reference and nothing else, you personally give out your business cards so if you sell yourself they'll keep the business card.
if your in a rush and don't have time to chat, give em a flyer and a business card. to me, to much on a business card can sometimes look unprofessional. it should never look like a sales pitch.
but thats just my opinion on here and not necessarily the right one.
keep it simple, with a quality card.

i'd be embarrassed if i pulled out a four fold business card, all singing all dancing, flashing lights, discount voucher, nothing to pay for 12 months, 3 years interest free credit, and gave it to one of my clients, they'd say "nice card, but wheres the telephone number" i'd say "its on there somewhere love, you'll find it eventually, probably somewhere near the small print"

Here's what I do.

I sometimes give out a card, but usually I get a conversation going and find out about them. I then send them something like an enveloped  postcard  with a little note on it. It's phrased more towards the chat than flogging services.

Not straightforward I know but found worthwhile.
