Alex Gardiner- 45'+

Hi Alex
You have probably been asked this before but will you be bringing out a longer SLX? I will need to replace my 45' Ionics pole soon as it is getting very tired now and I am impressed with the SLX but at 25' it is far too short. I would need a mimimum of 45' but possibly go for a 60'.

I was also impressed with the super-lite but I get the impression on your website that I would have to assemble it each time I use it which I think would be time consuming and puts me off. I would much prefer a telescopic version for that reason. Am I right in thinking this? Also, have you got a video of putting it together and using it anywhere?

Thanks  in advance

Hi Adie

We have shot a new video of the Super-Lite being assembled but we are going to have to re-shoot it as the background wind noise has ruined the sound track (I could put it on without sound?).

It's actually very quick and simple to assemble a Super-Lite, it just sounds complicated.

Are we going to be building a longer SL-X?  Sounds like a nice idea but I'm not going to make any promises as to when it will be available.  How does 43ft, 2.8kg, collapsed length 5'7" sound?

If I could see the video that you have that would be great. I just want to get an idea of how it looks and how quick it is put together.

43' SLX sounds great. Great weight and great closed length. This will cover all of my work. Saying that I really need to consider a 60' as a stand by for those occaisional jobs...........

Thanks Alex and Poleman. The superlite was alot easier and quicker than I expected to assemble.

Why do you say it is more suitable for commercial jobs and the SLX is suitable for domestic? Most of my work is domestic but I think the superlite would be a better investment as I could get the 60' which would cover all jobs and future jobs (I am currently trying to increase commercail jobs)
What problems would I encounter using SLX on 2 storey domestics all day? (I would probably still use my 12' X-tel on ground floor though.)

Some of our clients swear that they are faster setting up with the modular than a telescopic, but I'm not sure.

A telescopic pole is generally going to be more suitable for domestic work as often you are doing only a couple of windows before needing to make a length adjustment. With a telescopic this is easy and quick to do even in cramped domestic spaces. A modular pole is very suited to commercial as you can set it up at its maximum height needed, do right around the building or across one face of the building and then remove a section or two and repeat at the next level. This method works very well, but is not always practical to do on domestic work as it would mean too much back and forth often through gates, etc.

The SL-X, being of a compact and adjustable nature, is very easy to use on domestic work and is my pole of choice. I only switch to the SL2 when I know that I have to go higher, I will then usually stay with the SL2 right down to ground floor as it is only a case of removing sections.

Thanks for your help and honesty. I think I will go for the SLX when/if you start to sell the 43'. Can you reserve one for me please? Any idea what sort of price range I should budget for?  My email address is info@ro-sheen.co.uk.

The SL2 does take slightly longer before you are actually cleaning windows but the big advanage is because it is so light you work faster and longer so you more than make up the extra time. You can work with the SL2 virtually all day long unlike the Ionics 60ft telescopic I had where I was recked after 15minutes due to the weight.
Also you are only lifting the height of pole you need unlike a telescopic where you are still lifting a 60ft pole. If your working your way down the floors to ground level you just remove a section so the pole gets even lighter and no need to swap to a shorter pole.

Alex couldnt you make the base of the slx compatable with the modular sl2,that way we could have a telescopic 25ft pole for domestic that could extend modularly for higher work?

In theory it does sound great and we did look at having this produced.  In reality, the join between the two poles would be very hard and expensive to produce.  Also, it would have been prone to wear.  What would have been a tight fit for the first few weeks of use would soon become a loose fit with no way of tightening it up.

As the sl2 is a slide fit, couldn't it work by having the extension slightly tapered?

The trouble is that you would need a joint that stays tight for working at sideways angle and getting a taper section to fit a straight section would be very difficult. Also the Sl2 extension sections are designed at the top to take external stress and used as an SL-X extension they would be subjected to internal stress. With all of these things considered we gave up on the idea. We have also found that the fibre glass telescopic sections work very well and are fairly 'low-tech' so tend to be a bit more reliable.

So what would the girth be on a 43 foot slx. Sounds like a fantastic idea. How many sections.

Simon.
